Be it known thatv I, OLIVER I. FRITQHLE, a citizen of the United States, residin at Denver, in the county of Denver and tate of Colorado have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Batteries, of which the following is a specification. a
This invention relates to storage batteries and more particularly to mechanical details of construction thereof.
It isthe gener-al purpose'of the invention to .provide a battery unit of rugged mechanical construction.
A particular object is to provide means for easily assembling the different` elements in fixed relation as a single mechanical unit.
In order to more fully explain the nature of the invention and its characteristic aspects I'referA to the accompanying drawings in which- Fig. 1 is a sectional view through la battary;

The casing 1, which is preferably a glass jar, has a recessed collar 2 defining an overhanging wall 3. The cover Lpreferably of rcelain, has an upwardly beveled edge 5 adapted to be loosely received in the recess of the collar 2. The space intermediate the overhanging wall 3 of the jar and edge 5 is filled with a suitable cement which in hardened condition forms a secure seal 18 and at the same time interlocks the jar and the cover against relative movement.-
As is usual, the plates of one sign are all i connected to strap 6 while the pla-tesof oposite sign are connected to strap 7, which, 1n turn, form part of posts 8 and 9 respectively.
In order to quickly and effectively lock the posts to the cover, I provide the posts with recesses 10 and the cover` with recesses 11. l
When the plates arey in proper assembled relation, the posts 8 and 9 are passed .through the post holes in the cover plate so that the recesses 10 are accessible from above the plate and split washers 13 are inserted in the recesses. Then the cover is .raised toits normal position relatively'- to as indicated in Fig. 1 and filler' the posts, block 12 is inserted between the plate straps 6 and 7 and the cover to lock thelatter and Specification of- Letters Patent.

Since the straps 7 and 8 are disposed entirel on one side of the vertical center line of t e plates, the plates have a tendency to sag down on one side. To prevent such sagging and fanning apart of the plates I provide on the bottom edge of the inside negative plates lugs 14 located slightly on one side of the vertical center line thereof, on the positlve plates lugs 15 disposed on the ether side of the center line and on the outside negative plates lugs 16 in which are formed apertures 17 intersected by the centerline and pass a key 18 of insulating material through the space defined by. the lugs 14 and 15 and through the apertures 17. This simple and cheap arrangement Hanging interior walls and a cover plate having upwardly beveled edges adapted to be seated in the recess of the collar.
2. In a battery, a casing having at its upper end a recessed collar defining overhanging interior-walls, va cover plate havingl upwardly beveled edges and a filler intermediate the said Walls and the edges.

In a battery, the combination of a cover plate having an orifice,` a post 'extending through-.the orifice and having a peripheral recess, means adapted to be inserted inthe said recess to define a shoulder against the upper surface of the cover plate and means adapted to be inserted in the space between the plate straps and the lower surface of the cover plate to lock the latter andthe post againstlrelative movement.

In a battery, the combination of a cover plate having an orifice and a recess in its upper surface around the orifice, a post extending through, the orifice, means adapted to be attached to the post to filLthe recess in the cover plate and define a shoulder aga-inst .the cover plate and a filler block adapted to be inserted in the space between the plate straps and lower surface of the cover plate.
6; In a battery, the combination of a cover plate having an orifice and a recess in its upper surfacearound the oriiice, a post eX- tending through the orifice and having a peripheral recess, a splitl washer adapted t0 be inserted in the said peripheral recess and to take up the space defined by the recess in the cover plate and a filler block adapted to be inserted in the space between the plate straps and the lower surface of the cover plate.
7. In a battery, the combination with the alternate positive and negative plates and straps and posts located on opposite sides of the vertical center line of the plates, of lugs disposed on the lower edge of the outside plates, said lugs having each an aperture vsubstantially inv the centralv vertical plane of the plates, of lugs on alternate inside plates, disposed on one side of the central vertical plane, and lugs on the remaining alternate plates disposed on the other side of the central vertical plane.
8. In a battery, the combination with the alternate positive and negative plates and straps and posts located on opposite sides of the vertical center line of the plates, of lugs disposed on the lower edge of the outside plates, said lugs having each an a erture substantially in the central vertlcal plane of the plates, of lugs on alternate inside plates disposed on`one side of the central vertical plane, lugs on the remaining alternate plates disposed on the other side of the central vertical plane and a key member extending through the space intermediate the oppositely disposedlugs and received in the apertures of the lugs on the outside plates.
