Specicaten'of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 19232.
Applicationy filed January 3, 1920. Serial No. 349,261.
Relating to Spraying and Distributing' Nozzles, (for which I have obtained British Letters Patent No. 141,772, dated -December 17, 1918,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to spraying nozzles in which one or more of the streams of fiuid are discharged spirally to meet another' stream in a chamber from which they issue together. The object of this invention is to provide an improved nozzle which can be used with the same or different fluids.
According to this invention I provide tivo or more separate inlets which can be used for the same or different fluids.
In one manner of carrying out the invention the device is provided with a disc having orifices cut in its periphery at an angle transversely to the main axis of the nozzle. At the central portion of the disc other orifices are formed at a transverse angle to the main axis of the nozzle and in an op` posed direction to the orifices in the periphery. Between the two streams another stream issues through orifices parallel to the axis of the nozzle. In front of the disc is a coned or tapered chamber terminating in a discharge aperture which forms kthe nozzle. The streams of fluid passing through the apertures strike the sloping walls of the restriced space within the chamber and thus react upon each other, the impact causing the particles of duid to become finely divided and thoroughly atomized.
If preferred the peripheral orifices may be out at an angle as above described and the central orifices may be formed parallel to the main axis of the nozzle. In this ,case also a third stream of fiuid is directed between the two whirls of fluids so formed and the streams of fiuid having passed through the orifices will strike the walls of the restricted space and so become thoroughly atomized.
The details with regard to the cross-sec tional area of the orifices and the manner of securing and turning the main disc, may be applied to this invention as described in my prior patent above referred to.
If desired the nozzle may be employed for the combining of two or more fiuids before discharged through the nozzle7 in which 'case a passage would conduct fiuid to the peripheral orifices and a separate passage would conduct fluid to the central orifices, or one fluid will be yconducted to the cen` tral and peripheral orifices and the other to the intermediate orifices. The number of fluids which may be mixed being, within reason, unlimited, it only being necessary to supply a separate set of orifices and passages for each particular fluid.
In some cases I may employ a solid mixed with the duid, such as sand, for use as a sand blast, or I may mix the ingredients of whitewash with the fluid for whitewashing walls and the like.
y Referring to the drawings filed herewith:-
Fig. l is a longitudinal section of one form of spraying nozzle made in accordance with this invention; and
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 in Fig. l.
The nozzle comprises an external tube c, an internal tube 5, and an intermediate tube c forming a central passage and two annular passages. The external tube is provided with an inlet d, and the external tube a and the internal tube Z) are connected by ports e e.
The internal pipe Z) is closed by a plug f and the external tube a is closed by a cap g which is provided with a threaded socket zfor connection with a pipe supplying tar, oil or other fluid to be sprayed. The external tube is provided with an annular plug j and the internal tube with a plug la. The plug j is pierced with inclined or helically disposed ports m and the plug lo is pierced with ports n inclined in the opposite direction to the ports m. The end of the nozzle is provided with a conical extension forming a chamber 0 having an orifice p, the plugs j and 7c forming partitions between the tubes a and Z) and the conical chamber o. i
In use, when it is desired to spray oil, tar, paint, or other liquid, the socket z. is connected to the liquid supply, under pressurek or otherwise, and the orifice d is connected to compressed air or steam supply. 'Ihe compressed air or steam passes into the outer and inner tubes and issues through inclined holes or jets m and fn, causing swirls in opposite direction. The liquid to be sprayed is drawn into or forced into the Chamber o With the steam or air and is forced out through the orice p in a fine and evenly distributed spray.
This invention is adapted Jfor use in burning liquid and pulverized fuel of all deseription.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A nozzle comprising a plurality of concentrie tubes forming a Central passage and two annular assaofes a conical extension carried by the external tube, partitions between said extension and tWo of said tubes, said partitions having a plurality of oppositely disposed helical ports communicating With ysaid extension and tubes, transfer -ports communicating with the outer and central passages, said annular passages each having an inlet and said extension being provided With an outlet orifice.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
