BAG.
Y clal'e the following to be a full,'clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whlch it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved paper bag and one object of the invent on is to provide a paper bag having an mproved handle construction for permitting the bag to be easily carried and to further permit the upper end portion of the bag to be reinforced and thus greatly strengthened and prevented from havin any tendency to tear when the bag is carried.-
Another object of the invention is to so construct this reinforcing and handle forming means that it will permit the bag to be folded in the usual manner into a compact mass when not in use.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure it is a view showing the improved bag in a folded condition.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the upper portion of the folded bag.
F1gure3 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view taken along the line 33 of Fig. l.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the improved bag ready for filling.
- F igure 5 is a perspective view of a reinforcing sheet used in constructing the improved bag.
Figure 6 is a plan view of a covering used in constructing the improved bag.
Figures 7, 8 and 9 are vertical sectional views through the upper end portions of bags having modified constructions.
This b'agl has opposed sides provided adjacent their upper ends or in other words ad jacent the open end of the bag with openings 2 for receiving the fingersand it will thus be seen that when the bag isfilled, the side por tions may be brought together and the fingers passed through these hand the side portions of the bag may be grasped by taking hold of the cross bars 3 formed by these openings 2. As reviously stated, it is desired to reinforce t e sides of the bag having the openings 2 formedtherein and Specification of Letters Patent. 7

openings 2 so that Patented May 9,1922. Serial No. 462,097.
' in order to do so, a sheet lsuch as shown in Fig. 5 will be placed against the inner face of each side, as shown in Fi 4 will be formed of a relatlvely heav or tough material and in the preferredfhrm will be formed of cardboard. This reinforcing sheet is provided with anopening 5 for registering with the opening 3 of thesides of the bag against which the sheet is secured. A covering which is preferably formed of the same type ofmaterlal as'the bag 1, is provided'and this covering which is indicated by the numeral 6 will be formed from a blank 7 shown in Fig. 6. This blank 7 is provided with openings 8 in its end portion to register with the registering openings 2 and 5 and this blank will be. folded along the dotted g 3. This sheetlines 9 thus providing wings 10 which will r extend upon opposite sides of the side portion of the bag when the covering is placed to straddle an inspection of Fig. 3, it will be seen that this covering straddles the side portion of the bag and the reinforcing it will be seen from an inspection of Figs. 5 and 6, that the reinforcing sheet 4 is of approximately the same size. and shape of one end portion of the blank7 from the dotted line 9 to the ends of the frame. Therefore, when the reinforcing sheet is ut in place and the covering put in place, t e end portions of the covering which extend down along the inner and outer sides of the bag will correspond to the size and shape of the reinforcement 4. This will cause'the upper end portions of the sides of the bag to be greatly reinforced and strengthened and not only provide a bag which can be easily car.- ried without danger of the handle portion tearing, but will further rovide a bag in which the side portions wi l and reinforced for a relatively large area and be prevented from having any tendency to be twisted and torn. When the bag is not in use, it can be folded as shown in Fig. 1 and Wlll thus be reduced to a flat mass which can be put awa in a small amount of space. While it has con stated that the bag is formed of paper, it-is to be understood that it may be formed of canvas, cloth, leather or any other being preferably formed of the same material sheet 4 'and further suitable material, the covering be strengthened and the reinforcement of more rigid material.
In the modified form disclosed, there has improved bag may be constructed. From an inspection of Fig. 7, it will be seen that if desired, the reinforcement sheet 4 may be placed against the outer face of the side wall of the bag instead of being glued to the inner face as shown in Fig. 3. In this form, the covering will have the same con-.
struction as disclosed in Figs. 3; 4 and 6 and will' be secured with one leaf positioned within the bag and the second outside thereof. It will thus be seen that the only differenCe between this form and that shown in Fig. 3, is the fact that in the form shown in Fig. 3, the reinforcing strips or plates 4 are secured to the inner faces of the side walls of the bag whereas in this form, they are secured to the outer faces.
In the form shown in Fig. 8, the covering will be'done away with and a reinforcing or strengthening sheet or plate 4 will be secured to the side wall of the bag and preferably against the inner face thereof. The strengthening sheet will be secured with the wall of the bag extending slightly above the upper edge of the strengthening sheet and ,this extended portion of the wall of the bag will he turned in as shown at 11 and pasted to the upper edge portion of the may be provided for releasably holding the month ortion of the bag in a closed posi tion.
I claim:
1. The combination with a bag having its sides provided with a finger receiving opening adjacent the open mouth of the bag, of reinforcing means for the said side of the bag, the reinforcing means comprising a sheet of relatively tough material fittlng against one face of the side of the bag and provided with an opening registering with the opening of the side of the bag, and a separate cover element straddling the side of the bag and having its side wings provided with openings registering with the openings in the sheet and side of the bag.
2. A bag having a hand opening in its side adjacent the open end of the bag, a reinforcing sheet for the said side of the bag reinforcing the side about the opening therein, and a separate covering element straddling the said side of the bag and having its inner and outer side portions of substantially the same size and shape as the reinforcing sheet, the reinforcing sheet and side portions of the covering being relatively large and having openings registering with the opening in the side of the bag.
-In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
FRED L. JOHNSON.
