APPARATUS FOR, TURNING HAnnLEs FROM, Rooms STOCK.
Application filed May 17,
. ING and HENRY DOBBINS, subjects of the M but can be King of Great Britain, both residing at Warrington, in the county of Lancaster and Kingdom of England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Turning Handles from Bound Stock, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention has for its object a method of and apparatus for turning the handles of brooms, brushes, garden tools and other goods turned from round stock.
In the turning of the handles of brooms and the like these are generally done by hand or by a templet machine,which usually turns the whole handle. This is an expensive way of doing it.
Now our invention consists in turning the handle and at a single operation;
This is best described by aid of the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view.
Figure 2 vertical end elevation with certain parts removed for clearness, and
Figure 3' side elevation of the machine.
In these, A is the specially shaped steel tool, and B is the stock or piece of timber from which the handle is cut. It is shown in the drawings with the handle proper just turned. D is the driving shaft, and D the pulley which may be fast and loose, but it is shown in the drawings as a wide pulley receiving a belt from a fast and loose pulley on a countershaft. E is roller chain gear connecting the driving shaft D and the other shaft D F F pedestals carrying shaft D and D G bracket carrying socket II, I stop pin acting-on the piece of timber to be turned at the cutting end, and it will be seen from the drawings Figure 3 that we arrange the stop to act below the centre so as to be clear of the cutting tool A, K pressure roller which is free to revolve on the shaft U supported in the combination fork bracket and levers L. The pressure roller K is normally held in off position by the counterweight pressed down by the treadle N acting on the rod N and helical spring 0. P is a link connecting treadle levers Q and Q with the knife A, which is free to slide in a guide bracket A. The knife A is normally counterbalanced by the counterweight Specification of Letters Patent.
S The treadle levers Q and Q have toggle olnts Q" which allow for the extra upward movement required by the presser roller K so as to allow for easy insertion and removal of the stock B. The treadle levers Q and Q are plvoted on the shaft T (which also acts as a stay bolt for the wood frame IV) and are kept in position by loose collars V. The shafts D and D carry the rollers X. The knife is secured to the slide rest A by studs T and four adjusting pins T are provided. The slide rest A"is carried by the bracket Y which is bolted to the frame. bracket also has an eyebearing Y which carries the shaft Y and Y is the other bracket with an eye bearing. R R adjustable collars to form stops.
The mode of action is as follows z-The plece of timber B to be turned is placed between the socket H and the stops I, resting on rollers X. The machine is set inmotion, the attendant presses down the treadle N, thus pressing the roller K on to the piece B before the knife A is moved. This is effected by the lost motion provided by the toggle joint. By further pressure on the treadle the knife A moves down to the piece B cutting same at one steady stroke so as to form a complete handle thereon. The treadle is now released and the counterweights M and S return the knife A and the presserroller K into their off positions. The piece B is removed and another piece B inserted, and so on. Z is a gantree and IV framing.
We declare that what we claim is 1. In a lathe for successively shapingand detaching articles from the end of a round rod, comprising a pair of rotating rollers upon which the rod rests with one end there- Serial No. 470,303.
of projecting beyond therollers to the length of the desired article,'a pattern knife having Patented May 9, 1922.
This
the rod and for moving the knife into engagement with the projecting part thereof.
2. In combination with a lathe substantially as described in claim 1, the common means for depressing the roller into-contact with the rod and for moving the knife into engagement with the projecting part thereof 1921, in the presence of two subscribing Wityieldingly connected to the roller permitnesses. ting the further operation of the said eom- 7 mon means to further depress the knife after TILLING' the roller has entered into engagement with I the Work. Witnesses:
In Witness whereof, We have hereunto JAMES C. MeKAn, signed our names this26th day of April, J. MOLAOHLAN.
