CHICKEN COOP.
Application led April 22, 1921.
To all whom 'it/may concern.
Be it known that I, JULIA E. Rrsrr, .a citizen of the United States, residing at Pipestone,'in the county of Pipestone and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chicken Coops; and I do declare the following to be ay full, clear and exact description 'of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
This invention relates to improvements in chicken coops of the type wherein it is desired to confine the mother hen, yet permit the chicks to roam at large, thus overcoming thepossibility of the hen stepping on and killing the small chicks as is a common occurrence, especially when confined in the-usual housing or coop.
The .principal object of the invention is to provide an improved coop of this type which embodies an linner compartment in which the hen is to be confined and an outer compartment which surrounds the iirstnamed compartment and provides between its inner face and the latter, a runway for the small chickens, said outercompartment being formed at its bottomiwith a'plurality of openings through which the chickens can pass in and out.
Another object of the invention is to provide a coop embodying the aforesaid compartments. the inner one being of such construction that it effectively coniines the hen1 yet permits the chicks to enter the same at any point around its periphery.
Another. andv very important object of the invention is to .provide a coop embodying the aforesaid construction, the compartments being formed with oppositely disposed or alined outlet' openings closed by doors, there being` two doors closing the openingin the inner compartment and these doors being hinged and of vsuch a size that when they are swung-open, they serve to close the aforesaid runway so that the hen cannot get into the latter.
Still another object ofthe inventiony is Vto provide a novel brooderfor chickens which is provided at its top with an opening by means of which access may be had to the interior of the coop, this opening being surrounded by arim having air inlet openings therein, the opening in the top of the coop being `closed by a cover is Specification of Letters Patent.

equipped with a depending apertured iiange surrounding said rim, whereby when the cover is rotated, the inlet openings may be opened or closed as the case may be.
Other objects and' advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description. v
In the .accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure l is an elevational view of an improved coop constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a horizontal. sectional view taken on the plane of the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of the coop. y
. Figure 4 is a detail View showing the closure for the openings at the bottom of the coop. f
Referring to the drawings by numerals, l designates `an inner lcompartment composed of spaced wires or the like, the same fine `the mother hen therein. This inner compartment is substantially circular in shape and is surrounded by a sheet metal housing or outer compartment 2 which is spaced from the inner compartment in such a way as to provide a runway 3 for the small chicks. At this point. I wish to state that the inner compartment may be made from slats` or may be constructed in any other way. However, I wish. to construct it in such a way that it will effectively confine the hen therein, yet permit the small.- chicks to enter it at any pointthroughout its periphery. In order to let the hen out of the coop and her compartment, the' latter is equipped in one `side with an opening .4 closed by a pair of overlapping hinged -doors 5 locked together by suitable means 5a. The outer compartment 2 is likewise provided with an opening directly opposite or in alinement with the opening 4 andL it is closed by ,a sliding door` 6 movable in vguides 7 If desired, the door 6 may be equipped with a handle 8 to permit it to be raised vand lowered with facility. Attention is directed to the fact that the doors 5 are such a length that when swung` open, their free edges contact the guides 7 as shown in Fig. 2, thereby limiting their movement and serving to close the runway 3 so that the hen cannot enter the same. ln order to hold the compartments in proper spaced relation, a plurality of hooks 8a are provided, being pivot ally connected to the outer compartment and having their hooked ends engaged with the adjacent horizontal wire of the inner compartment as shown. l
As before stated, the outer sheet metal compartment is formed near its lower edge with a plurality of openings 9 which serve to permit the small chickens to pass in and out through them so that they can roam at large. 1f desired, the alternate openings 9 may be closed by isinglass windows 10. Furthermore, a circular closure 11, provided with a plurality of openings 12, may be einployed for the purpose of opening and closing the passages 9. This closure is equipped with a handle 13to permit it to be moved to open and close the openings 9.
As before intimated, l so construct the sheet metal compartment that the attendant may have free access thereto. in carrying this out, l provide the roof 13 with a central opening 14 which is surrounded-bi7 a vertically disposed rim 15 having al plurality of closely spaced air inlet openings 16. A removable cover 17 serves to close the opening 14 and is equipped with a depending flange or ring 1S surrounding the rim 15, this .tiange 18 being equipped with openings 19 for registering with the openings 16, whereby the amount of air permitted to enter the coop may be regulated or entirely shut off as the case may be.v To facilitate removal and rotation of the cover, it is equipped with one or more handles 20.
In use, the mother hen is placed within vthe wire compartment 1 and the doors are closed, being held in this position by the locking means shown. By confining the hen in this compartment, the chicks will be free to have unmolested use of the runway 3 and there will be no chance of the hen injuring them. Yet, if they desire, the chicks can enter the inner compartment at. any point throughout the circumference of the latter. They may also pass in and out of the openings 9 and roam about as they please. If it is desired to prevent them from passing in andout of the compartment 2 through these openings, the slide 11 may be actuated to close the openings. is before indicated, the air enters the compartment through the top of the outer compartment and it can be regulated to the desired degree by rotating the` cover 17 to increase and decrease the amount of airpassing through the air inlet openings .16 and 19. Feed and water canbe placed within the compartments by removing ythe cover 17. When it is desired to let the hen out of the coop, the doors 5 are swung open to the dotted line position indicated in Fig. 2 and the door 6 vis elevated to the dotted line portion indicated in Fig. 1. .frs before pointed out, the doors 5 when open prevent the hen from entering the runway 3 and molesting the sm all chicks.
careful consideration of the description taken in connection with the drawings is suiiicient to enable persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates to obtain a clear understanding of the same. Therefore, a more lengthy description is deemed unnecessary.
Since probably the best results may be obtained with the construction and arrangement herein shown and described, this construction and arrangement is taken as the preferred embodiment of the invention. However, slight minor changes'coming within the scope of the subjoined claims may be resorted to.
