PAPER ROLL EOE ROLLER- COPYING MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 1922.
Application filed Detober 2-1, 1913. Serial-No. 797,097.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Dr. RICHARD BERGER, engineer. a subject of the King of Bavaria, and residing at Bonn-on-the-Rhine, Venusbergweg, No. 23, in Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Rolls for Roller Copying Machines, (for which I have filed applications in Germany, March 1 1, 1913, No. S. 38520, V11, f; England, Oct. 9th, 1913, No. 22,824; France, Oct. 23rd, 1913, No. 62,541; Austria, Oct. 7th, 1913, no number.)
Roller copying machines require various auxiliary devices such as for instance a cutter for eparating the copying paper into proper lengths, a feeder, for introducing the originals to be copied, a stamp marking the originals in a way showing that theywere copied, and so forth.
It is desirable that these auxiliary devices work in co-action with each other, but, in such intervals as correspond to the lengths of the originals of different sizes, such for instance as a post-card, letter, and document or foolscap size. In otherwords, the copying machine, should be arranged in such a manner that according to the size of originals to be copied, the auxiliary devices enter into co-action automatically in the proper intervals, thus feeding, cutting, and stamp ing, &c., at such a moment as corresponds to the size the machine is adjusted to.
Various means have been proposed to that end, such as intermediate exchangeable gear-- ing and the like, invariably of a nature rendering the machine more complicated than necessary and more diflicult of adjustment and control.
According to the present invention. it is the copying paper itself that is utilized for controlling the action of the group of auxiliary devices. For thi purpose the copying paper in the shape of the so-called endless type customary in copying machines undergoes a special treatment providing it with markings or perforations at predetermined distances apart. These markings or perforations are utilized for acting upon senstitive parts of the machine, which parts, by releasing catchestransmit or shift power to the auxiliary devices at the moment they are to enter into action.
By the use of this prepared copying paper all multiple and intermediate gearing for working the auxiliary devices is fixed and proportionate intervals is done away with and the machine requires no adjustment by hand, its action being entirely automatic.
The invention is shown in perspective in the annexed drawing.
The copying paper 1 has perforations 2, spaced so as to coincide with the length of the originals for copying which the machine is to be used.
(if the copying machine only the shaft 3 is shown, on which is mounted a feeler or trailer 4 which normally glides loosely on the copying paper. The paper is suitably supported and the feeler- 4 engages in a perforation or cavity 2. when unsupported, owing to its weight. This slight movement of the feeler acts in co-operation with other parts of the machine in shifting or switching power to the auxiliary devices and causing them to enter into action at the proper moment.
I claim:
A. device for automatically actuating the feeding and cutting mechanism of copying machines of. the endless band type including a rock shaft which extends transversely of the endless band, said shaft being arranged for connection to the feeding mechanism, and a relatively wide gravity tongue on said shaft. said tongue being adapted to drop in slots located at intervals in the endless hand.
in testimony whereof. I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
