Be it known that I, JOHN THORNTON Mo- Cnsnnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boone, in the county of Boone and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Turndevice of that character adapted especially.
for use in turning the turn buckles on the truss rods lof railroad cars, although the 1mprovements can be used in wrenches for' other purposes also.
One object of the invention is the provision of a rotatable head for embracing the turn buckle or other object 'to be ro tated, and a member mounted `for oscillatory movement aroundvr the vhead and having' a ratchet connection therewith, whereby the oscillation of such member will rotateA the head step by step in one direction or the other, and said member and head being assembled in a novel manner.
Another object is the provision of such a wrench head which is divided into sections that 'can be readily' separated and assembled Jfor applying the head over Vor around the turn buckle or other object, and the sections having novel means for the detachable connection thereof.
A. further object is the provision of a novel ratchet mechanism between the oscillatoryy mem er and rotatable head, providing for the reversal of the ratchet Imechanism to rotate the head in either direction, and providing for other advantages in the use of the implement.
v'With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the descrip tion proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement ot parts hereinatter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is an elevation of the improved wrench, portions being broken away, and other shown in section.

The wrench has a circular rotatable head 5, which is divided diametrically into the arcuate or semicircular sections 6, each of which has a notch or recess 11 in-its inner edge, between the ends thereof, whereby the ends of `the two sections in abutting will provide an opening 12 inthe head centrally thereof. Each section 6 is provided at one end and at' one side of the recess 11, with a pairof ears 7 vprojectingto enter notches 8V in the corresponding end of the other section, to overlap an ear 9, the two lsections (i being duplicates of one another and said sections being readily slipped together to bring the ears 7 and 9 into overlapping relation and the sections .in abutment end to end. Said ears are' apertured for the insertion of pins 10 for securing the sections together, and ysuch pins can be readily drivenk out `for the detachment of one section 6 so that they can be readily slipped over a turn buckle 13 or other object, and the sections then brought together and secured, as seen in Fig. 1. f
An oscill'atorylmember 14E is' provided for actuating the head 5, being provided with a socket 15 for receiving' a lever or rod 16 used for obtaining a purchase in oscillating said member 141.' The member 14 is bifurcated at 'that portion adjacent tothe pe= riphery of the head 5, and has the flanges 17 overlapping the opposite sides of the head 5, and the flanges 17 are provided between their ends with arcuate lugs 18 projecting toward one another and entering annular grooves 19 in the opposite sides of the head 5, whereby to assemble the head5and member 111 for relative rotation about the axis of said head, without the member 14 extending across the opening 12. A ratchet mechanism is provided between the member 14 and head 5, and, for this purpose, the ends of the flanges 17 have ears 20 projecting therefrom between which double pawls or dogs 21 are pivoted onA pins 22 extending through said ears and the intermediate portions of said pawls. Each pawl 21 has reversed teeth 24 and 25 at the opposite ends thereof, with the teeth 2a of the two pawls located at those ends farthest remote from the member leland the teeth 25 located at those ends of the pawls adjacent to said member, and each pawl can be oscillated to swing either tooth into engagement with the teeth 23 on the periphery of the head 5, in order that each pawl can be reversed for reversing the direction of, rotation of the head when the member 14 is oscillated.
he inner ends of the pawls or those ends adjacent to the member 111, are V-shaped, as at 26, or have the diverging surfaces 26 arranged at an angle with one another, for cooperation with the similarly-shaped ends 27 of pins or members 28 slidable in bores or sockets 29 provided in the member 14. Light coiled expansion springs 30 are disposed in said sockets behind the pins `28, for projecting them yieldingly into engagement with the V -shaped ends 26 of the pawls 21, and screws 31 or similar elements are carried by the member 14 and project into longitudinal slots 32 in the pins 28, for limiting the longitudinal movement of said pins, to prevent them from being lost and to also prevent said pins from turning out of proper position.
ln using the wrench, the sections 6 of the head 5 are separated, and are then assem bled and secured together after being passed over the turn buckle 13 or other object to be rotated, and the pawls 21 are then set so as to rotate the head -in the desired direction when the member lil is cscillated by a lever 16. Thus, one pawl 14 is set, so that its tooth 25 engages the teeth 23, while the other pawl 21 is set so that its tooth 24: engages said teeth 23, whereby the head 5 is rotated counter clock-wise, as seen in Fig. 1, and both pawls engage the head to move it. `When the member 14n is moved clockwise, then the teeth which engage the teeth 23 will drag backwardly over the teeth 28, and the swinging movement of the pawls 21 will, by cam action force the pins 28 inwardly against the springs 30, and the pressure of the pins 28 against the ends 26 of the pawls will swing said pawls back against the teeth 23, to yieldingly engage the corresponding teeth of the pawls with the teeth 23 of the head. The pawls can be readily reversed, by swiirging them to move the corners of the ends 26 past the corners of the ends 27 of the pins 28, whereby said pins now hold the pawls in their reversed positions, thereby reversing the engagement of the pawl teeth with the teeth 23 of the head, and causing the head to rotate in the opposite direction ,Y ifi-lasse when the lever 16 is oscillated. The pins 28 thus serve to yieldingly engage the teeth of the pawls with the teeth 23, and also retain the pawls in either of their reversed positions. By setting the pawls so that both teeth 24 or both teeth 25 engage the head 5, at the same time, then the lever 16 and member 14 will be locked to the head, so that the head and member 14k move as a unit in both directions.
With the present wrench, the oscillatory member 14 engages the head 15 without Said member extending to or near the center of the head, thereby leaving the opening 12 clear, and the grooves 19 surround said opening for the sliding movement of the member 14 when oscillated.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A wrench comprising a rotatable annular head having a central opening, an oscillatory member overlapping said head and extending only partially around said head, said head having annular means surrounding said opening for the engagement of said head, and ratchet means between said inem` ber and head, said head having a section removable therefrom for placing the head around an object.
A wrench comprising a rotatable annular head having a central opening and annular grooves in opposite sides surrounding said opening, an oscillatory member having flanges overlapping the opposite sides of said head and extending only partially around said head, said flanges having lugs entering said grooves for the arcuate sliding movement of said member around the head, and ratchet means between said member and head, said head having a section removable therefrom for placing the head around an object.
3. A wrench comprising a rota-table annular head composed of separable sections having complementary recesses to form an opening in the head, said sections having means for attaching them together, an oscillatory member slidably engaging said head for movement around said head and extending only partially around said head so that one section of the head can be removed for placing the head around an object, and ratchet means between said member and head.
4. A wrench comprising a rotatable circular head composed of sections having complementary recesses to form an opening in the head, said sections having means for se curing them together, the head having annular grooves in opposite sides surrounding said opening, an oscillatory member having flanges overlapping the opposite sides of said head and provided with lugs entering said grooves for arcuate sliding movement around said head, and ratchet means between said member and head.
5. A Wrench comprising a rotatable annular head having an o-pening, peripheral teeth and grooves surrounding said opening, an oscillatory member having flanges overlapping the opposite sides of said head and provided with lugs entering said grooves for the arcuate sliding movement of said member with respect to the head, and ratchet means between said member and head, said head having a section removable therefrom for placing the head around an object.
6. A wrench comprising a rotatable head having a central opening and teeth surrounding said opening, an oscillatory member, said head having annular means surrounding said opening for the engagement of said member to move relatively to said head, said member extending only partially around the head, the head having a section removable therefrom for placing the head around an object, a lever connected to said member, a pair of double pawls pivoted intermediate their ends to said member at opposite sides of said lever, each pawl having teeth at opposite ends to alternately engage the aforesaid teeth at opposite sides of Sald lever, and spring-pressed means carried by said member between said pawls and cooperable therewith for retaining the pawls in reversed positions.
7. A Wrench comprising a. rotatable head having teeth, an oscillatory member, opposite reversible pawls pivotally connected intermediate their ends to opposite portions of said member and having teeth at opposite ends to alternately engage the teeth of said head, diverging pins slidable in said member between the pawls, and springs for projecting said pins toward the pawls, said pins and adjacent ends of said pawls having cooperable V-shaped portions for retaining either pawl in either of its. reversed positions and for yieldingly moving the corresponding tooth into engagement with the teeth of the head.
