PACKAGE TIE.
Laitfifi Application filed April 13,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. DUVAR- may, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Derry, in the county of Rockingh am and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and Improved Package Tic, of which the following is a full, clear, and ex act description.
The invention relates to improvements in package ties, an object of the invention being to provide a tie or fastening device which will operate to conveniently and securely couple the ends of a cord or other flexible device, after the latter has been placed around a bundle on package, so that the tie can be used over and over again without knotting the cord.
A further object is to provide a package tie composed preferably of wire having acoil or other bent portion between its ends, whereby the device is rendered elastic so that when in operative position connecting the ends of a flexible device, the package tic will serve to exert a continuous spring action or elastic pull upon the cord or other flexible device, to maintain the same in secure position around the package.
A further object is to provide a package tie of the character described, which can be manufactured and sold at an extremely low price, which will greatly facilitate the tying up of bundles and packages and enable the repeated use of the cords and ties.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating a box or package showing the application thereto of my improved package tie.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the package tie.
Figure 3 is an edge view thereof.
1 represents my improved package tic which is composed of a single piece of wire bent at both ends in general compound curvature forming a pair of cord gripping recesses 2 and 3 at both ends of the package tie. The wire forming the package tie in- Specification c '5 Letters Patent.

termediate its ends is coiled preferably in the form of a single convolution 4, although it may be given any desired number of convolutions, or may be curved in other ways in order to give to the package tie a certain amount of elasticity.
I would have it understood that the inven tion is not limited to the particular manner of forming hooks, jaws, or gripping recesses at its respective ends, nor to the par-- ticular manner of bending the wire between its ends as the device is capable of modification in this particular without departing from the invention.
In operation, one end of the cord or other flexible device 5 is secured to one end of the package tie 1 in any approved manner. This connection may be in the form of a knot, if desired, as it is frequently desirable to connect the package tie more or less permanently with one end of the cord. The cord is then passed around the box or package 6 and through the inner recess 3 of the package tie, and then positioned around the package at right angles to its first-named direction, and then clamped in the outer recess and it is, of course, obvious that this final tie may consist of passing the cord any desired number of times around the end of the package tie.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from the invention. and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A package tie consisting of a single length of wire coiled intermediate its ends and hav ing its extremities bent into compound curvature providing a pair of angular or V- shaped recesses at both ends for the reception of a flexible connecting device, said extremities being located at opposite sides of the wire but in the same plane and at right angles to the plane of the coiled intermediate portion.
WILLIAM HECTOR DUVARNEY.
