IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-HODS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 14 L485, dated August 5, 1873 application filed April 1, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. BROWN, of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Ooal- Hods, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention consists in applying to an ordinary coal-hod an extensionpiece or discharge-way, said Way being applied to that part of the hod by which the coal is ordinarily discharged, and attached to the same by means of any convenient slides or slots, and is operated by an extension of the handle, or by any other desirable device; the object of the invention being to facilitate the discharge of the coal in a stove or grate, and to prevent spilling in the operation.
Figure 1 is an elevation of my device with the auxiliary discharge piece drawn down. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same when the discharge-piece is thrown up.
Let A represent a coal-hod, made in any of the desired styles, and of any suitable material. To the ordinary discharge of this hod I attach my extension-piece B. This piece B may be attached to the body of the hod by a slot and guide-piece, as shown at M, or in any desirable manner, it only being necessary that the extension-piece B be free to slide up and down. This slide or extension may be operated by means of the handle 0, the lower ends of which are prolonged from d to e, so as to act as levers, as shown, or a lever, H, pivoted at K and acting on the slide B at L, may be used.
The use of this invention is as follows: \Vhen the hod is filled with coal, the extension may be down, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the hod is no more inconvenient than any ordinary one. When it is desired to put coal in the stove or grate, the extension may be thrown up so as to act as a leading-spout, and
thus conduct the coal without spilling.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the extension-spout B with the hod A, operating as described and for the purpose set forth.
