' IPHI'LLIP IIROFF, or BROOKLYN, new; YORK.
'roor iimusn emma.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILLIP Inorr", citizen of Russia, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of have invented certain new and useful linprovements in Toothbrushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toothbrushes and'it has for a general object to provide a brush by which the teeth can be moreeasily and thoroughly cleaned than with the brushes now in use. I f
Other objects relate more specifically to the particular arrangement of a series of brush elements and the provision of means for giving a rotary movement to certain of said brush elements.
For further comprehensionof the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 of the drawings is an exterior edge view of a toothbrush constructed according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sec- 'tional view showing particularly the operating handle and its related parts.
As here shown my improved brush comprises a casing 10 having one side open through which the brush elements project. Extending across this casing,and suitably I supported in the side walls thereof, are a flanges 16 riveted to the side walls of the casing 10.
The brushes 13 are adapted tobe' given a rotary movement/by the following means: A pair of connecting rods 16, are connected at one endto the crank elements 12 and at opposite ends to a crank disk 17 fixed on a stud 18 pivoted in the wall 10' of the casing opposite the'open side thereof, this wall Specificationof Letters Patent;
Queens and State of New York,
of parallel shafts 11 having central brushes on therespective shafts Patented May a, 192 2;.
Application' fi earra io, 1921. v Serial'No. 468,392.
being" parallel to a; plane intersecting the sects this plane midway between the shafts, the'connecting rods 16' extendingupwardin a generally diagonal direction.
Fixed on the stud 18' outside the casing wall 10' is asecond crank disk20 towhich is pivotally connected adjacent one edge as at 21 an operating handle 22; Inthe edge of disk 20, diametrically opposite the pivot point of the'handle- 22, is' formed a notch 23 adapted to receive a pawl 24 pivotedas at I shafts 11, while the axis of stud 18' inter- 25 in a slot 26in the handle 22 whereby the handle can be locked to the disk 20to oscillate the latter.
A flat spring 30 is'pivotally' connected near one end as at 31 to the handle 22, and isadapt-ed to bear on an angular cam shoulder 32 on the pawl 24 to yieldingly hold it in position either projecting downward into the notch 23, or lying in the slot 26 and clear of the disk 20, the spring being adapted to be swung parallel to the handle into and out of position over the slot 26 so as to permit of access to the pawl for adjustment purposes.
In the use of my improved brush .the same may be engaged with the teeth as shown in Fig. 2 in which the teeth are indicated at 35 as projecting between the rotary brushes 13 and toward the fixed brushes 14.
The brushes 13 may be given an oscillatory movement by oscillating handle 22 the connecting rods 16.causing the shafts 11 to also oscillate. The brushes 13, may be given a complete rotary movement by freeing the pawl 24 from the notch 23, when the disk 20 may be rotated by a generally longitudinal reciprocation of handle 22, causing disk 17 and the crank shafts 11' to rotate' also.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to'protect by Letters Patent of. the United States is as follows 1. A toothbrush having a pair of opposed rotary brushes, and means for rotating said brushes, and a fixed brush disposed at a point intermediate said rotary brushes.
rotary brushes, crank shafts on which said brushes are mounted, a crank element, connecting rods between said crank shafts and 2. A toothbrush having a pair of opposed rotary brushes, crank shafts on which said brushes are mounted, a crank element, connecting rods between said crank shafts and crank element, and an operating handle pivotally attached to said crank element eccentrically thereof, and releasable means for locking said handle rigidly to said crank element. g v I 4. A toothbrush having a pair of opposed rotary brushes, crank shafts on which said brushes are "mounted, a crank element, con necting rods betweensaid crank shafts and crank element, and an operating handle pivotally attached to said crank element eccentrically thereof, and releasable means for locking said handle rigidly to said crank element, said means including a pawl pivotally attached to said handle and adapted to' en gage a notch in said crank element.
5; A toothbrush having a pair of opposed rotary brushes, crank shafts on which said brushes are*n1ounted,,a crank element havment, and an operating handle pivotally attached to said. crank element eccentrically thereof, and releasable means for locking said handle rigidly to said crank element, said means including a pawl pivotally at tached to'said'handle and adapted to, engage said notch insaid crank element, said pawl presenting an angular cam shoulder, and a movable member on saidhandle adapted to engage said cain'shoulderto hold said pawl in different positions. l f I 6. Atoothbrush comprising a casing, 'a" pair of parallel shafts 'supportedinfisaid casing and having crank elements'arranged centrally thereof, .a pair of brushes .on' each shaft located oneo n each side of the crank elements, fixed brushes carried said casing above and between correspond ng brushes on the respective shafts, and nleans for .ro;
tating said shafts. V In "testimony whereof I have afiixe'd my signature; I v 3 c PH IPf oFF;
