In the operation of a locomotive engine in I which a construction embodying the esseir tial features of that above described, or
their equivalents, is applied, when one of,
the driving wheels is nann deflected, in either direction, from its normal position, relatively to the adjacent side frame, which deflection is effected by the resistance opposed by the contact of the outer track rail with the flange of the adjacent driving wheel, upon the passage of the locomotive from a tangent to a curve of the track, the accompanying lateral movement of the driving box, swings the rocker, 11, in direction similar to that of the movement of-the box. This movement of the rocker, which acts toraise the supporting beam, 10, is resisted by the weight carried by the adjacent end there of, this resistance acting, through the roller 12, and the bearing on the lower end of the the springs, 9, participate in its vertical movement, as the resistance stated is overcome, without disturbance of their relation,
laterally, to the side frame members or equalizer connections.
In the construction illustrated, the resistance is exerted on one side of the locomotive only, the journal at the oppositeend of the axle sliding through its driving box with out instituting any resistance other than lateral journal friction, which, if the joun nal is properly lubricated, will be trifling. As the resistance of the rail decreases, in the passage of the locomotive from a. curve'to a fering therefrom only in the substitution of another form of three point suspension rocker, 11, for the; rocker, 11, of Figs. 1 and 2. The rocker is, in this instance, of upright U section, its legs extending upwardly on opposite sides of the upperframe rail, 1, and
its lower portion, connecting the legs, being provided with a central segmental bearing, 11', extending in a longitudinal plane of the frame, and fitting in a corresponding groove or recess inv the top of the driving box, 4.

I claim as my invention and desire tose cure by Letters Patent:
1. In a locomotive engine, the combination of aside frame; a driving'box, fittedwith the capacity of relative movement therein a spring supporting beam, which is vertically movable relatively to the driving box; and vibratable means, interposed between the supporting beam and the driving box, for transmitting resistance from one to the other of said members, in planes on the opposite sides of the' frame.
