This invention relates to the art of makingv shoes and more particularly to shoe lasts.
An object of the invention is the provision of automatically operated means for securing the last within the shoe without the use Y y of tacks, such as are usually driven through the back of the shoe into the last, thus saving the time and labor necessary for driving and removing the tacks and eliminating the ltack hole in the shoe and further preventing damage to the last,
due to the use of such tacks.
Another object of the invention is the pro- -vision of the last securing means which is capable of use in connection with hinged lasts of all descriptions, the invention providing a'convenient means for securing the last in position without injury to .either the last, the shoe or the lining. r
Other objects and advantages'of-the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the ldrawings y Figure 1 is a side elevation of a last in position within a shoe, the latter beingshown by dotted lines, while vthe last is broken away to more clearly'show. the invention.
Figure 2 is a view similar-to Figure 1 showing the last in position for removal from the shoe. j
Figure 3 is a detailed view of the securing means which is carried bythe last. f
Referring to the drawings in detail, there is illustrated a last which is formed ofsecone end 14: of which is pointed to provideV a spur. This vpin operates or slides in an upwardly and rearwardly; inclined opening 15 which is provided in the last section 11 and extends centrally and longitudinally of vthe last. The opposite end ofthe pin is formed into a loop 16 ,for the passage ofa j `Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr, 25,' A1922, Y Application iiiea'migusi 17, 1920. serial No. 404,122. 'v
In the use of the inventiomthelast is-inserted in the shoe in the position shown in Figure 2 and'when in this position, the pin V13 lwill vbe .retracted so that the spur or i pointed end 14 will liefwithin the opening l5 and will therefore notcorne in Contact with the shoe lining. W'henthe sectionll Vof the last has been pusheddownwardly l within the 'heel of the shoe, the vpointed end y or spur 14 will be projected so as to engage 4the rear end kof the shoe andnholdftlie la-st.
in proper position until purposely removed.
The invention is. susceptible of variousl i changes in its form', proportions and minor V n details of construction andA the right is here-I j' in reserved to make such changes as properly fall'within the scope of the appended claims. Having described` the invention what is v claimed is 1. A shoe last comprising va toe section, a heel section pivotally secured to the toe secf tion "and having a vpassage extending from 'its front to its v rear end and a flexible .pin
having one end secured'to the rear end of Y the toe sectionat a point directly'y beneath and spaced from the pivotal'connection and adapted to lie within' the passage, whereby,
when the sections are in normal position the free end of the pin will be .projected beyond the outer end ofV the heel sectiona'nd re` tracted when the sections are moved relatively upon their pivot. 2. A shoe last comprising va toe` section,l
vla heel section pivotally `secured to. the tee section and havingan upwardly yand, rearwardly inclined passage extending from 4its front to its rear end and a eXible pin hav-' ing one end secured to the rear Ven d of the yond the outer end of the lheel section and 'first sectionv at a point directlybeneath and i ino retracted .when the sections are moved rela-j tively upon their pivots.
