KITE REEL.
"Application filed April' 18,
ToaZZ whom-it may concern: r
Be itknown'that--I,- GEORGE D. =WAN-NER, a citizen of the United States, residingat Dayton, in -the' county of -Montgomery and State of 'Ohio, fhave' invented certain new and useful Improvements-in Kite- Reels or the like, of'which the following is a' specifiserves as a stationary axis therefor. To procation, reference being a had therein 1 to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to kite reels, having for: its object to provide an improved reel of simple, Substantial construction -wl1iel1 can be. made and sold at low -cost. An object of theinvention is to produce a kite reel having but few; parts which are preferably assembled on the knockdown principle to enable handling of the same in specified lots in cartons of minimum capacity,-thus to effect both economy of space and convenience and reduced cost of distribution.
In the accompanying drawings my improved reel is illustrated in a number of forms of modified construction,-the essential principle of the invention being applied in each construction in the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a view in elevation illustrating the improved reel in one form; v
Fig. 2 is a view of the reel in a-modified form;
Fig. 3 is a view of the. reel in a simpler form than that shown in Figs. 1 andQ, and
Fig. is a view illustrating the knockdown construction of the reel.
Fig. 5 is afront elevation of the reel'as shown in Fig. 1. I
As above stated, the main object of the invention is to provide a kite reelwhich can .be made and sold at low cost,-for 5e to 10,
thus vbringing the cost easily within the means of boys interested in kites, and also to provide a reel which will be substantial, and satisfactory for its intended purpose.
To this end, my improved reel has few parts and is of the simplest construction. As distinguished from the box-frame reels of the usual type which are more expensive, the reel of the present invention, as here shown, consists of a single support 1 for the winding member,the lower end of part 1 serving as a handle for holding the reel as it is being operated. I V
As illustrated in Figs. 1, 3-, and 4, the winding member is mounted on the supporting member by means of a slip pin 2 which ,Specificationtf Letters Pate nt. i lgBat t dgA f i 19 2 1921. Serial no} 462,105;
vide for t'heknock dow-n "assembly of' the parts, the cross blades 3 of' the winding member are'each slottedfin one edge thereof as indicated at t "and are adapted to' be do tachably assembled one blade-withthe other, e wi'tlntheir inner and outer edges substan:
tially flush, and having an aperture formed transversely therethrough, on the axial line of the assembled blades, to 'receive" the slip mits of its easy release therefrom. 1
As shown ingF-igs. 1, 2, a-nd 3, a.--laterally pro eCtJ-Ilg finger piece 5 is secured in {the outer edge of one 0f the blades --%3 to serve as a means for operating the reel.
In Fig. 2 a modified construction is illus-" pin 2, the innerend of the pin having a slid ngor pressure fit in supportl which per-.
crank shaft 6 is rotatably supported in part 1,the reel blades 3 being constructed and assembled as above describedbut secured in operatively fixed relation to shaft 6,thus
to be operated by turning of the shaft.
In the form illustrated in Fig. lan oper- I I able guide 7 is provided for the kite string as it islwound on the reel, this featurecon-J. Y
sisting of a length ofxspring wire, as here shown, having its lower end 8 anchored in f support 1,, and its upper end 9 bent inwardly substantially at right angles to -the body length of the-wire, and passing through a slot 10 formed in the upperend of part 1, 1 thus serving as a guide for the reciprocal movement of the wire,'thebent end'of the wire being formedinto a loop 11 to receive the kite string. Thev wire as assembled on the supporting member normally springs outwardly as illustrated in Fig. 1, and is adapted to be moved inwardly by a'slight pressure of the thumb as the device is held i in one hand of the operator as thereel is being turned with the othe-r,-thus with alternate pressure and; release of the spring the same will be actuated reciprocally to effect even winding of the string on the reel. I
In Figs. :2, 3, and 4a fixed guide 12 for the kite string is shown which serves to ditrated in Fig. 4c. The simpler construction,
rect the. string to the reel as the same is beenables the reducing of cost and sales price to the minimum, and provides a reel hich meets the requirements though not as wellas the more complete forms shown.
The knockdown construction of the'reel, in. the several forms here shown, is illustrated in Fig. 4 in' which one of the blades 3 is detached, thuspermitting the parts to lie fiat in a carton or any suitable container it? handling and shipping the reels in quan- 1 ies.
Having described my invention, I claim:.
. 1. In arkite reel, the combination. with a supporting member comprising a handle, of a winding member axially supported on said member, a reciprocally operable guide for a kite string secured to the supporting member adjacent said handle, and actuating means for the winding member.
V 2. In a kite reel, the combination with a supportingmember comprising a handle, of: a winding member axially supported on said member, a spring actuated, reciprocally operable guide for a kitestring secured to'the supporting member adjacent said handle, and actuating means for the winding memi ber.
3. In a kite reel, the combination with a supporting member comprising a handle and havlng a slotted end, of a windlng member axially supported on sald member, a reciprocally operableguide for a kite string se-- cured to the supporting memberadjacent said handle and operable throughsaid slot ted end, and actuating means forthe'winding member.
4. In a kite reel, the combination with a single supporting member,-1of;apin secured in said member andextending laterally at right angles thereof, a winding member a'X-.
ially supported on said pin, a guide .for a klte string secured to andextending laterally of the supporting member over said
