UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LESLIE E. IVIAUPIN, OF CAMPBELLSVILLE, KENTUCKY;
CALCULATOR.
Be. it known that I, Lnsmn E. MA'UPIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at (lampbellsville, in the county of Taylor and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calculators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in'the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to atabular calculator for conveniently terminating calculations, such as required in the exchange of grain and sale of flour, meal, and the like, and the invention aims to provide such a device comprisiuira cylinder-containing the tables of calculations or figures and novel.
means for supporting same for rotation.
A further object is the provision of such a d vice having means for conveniently rotating the cylinders by hand, and means iior cooperation with the graduations onthe cylinder for convenience in determining the calculations.
It is also the object of the invention to provide a calculator of the nature indicated which is simple-and inexpensive in construction, as well. as practical and serviceable in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the descrip tion proceeds, the inventionresides in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed without depart ing from the spirit of the invention. Y
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying dra wings. wherein Figure 1 is a front view of the device, portions being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
F ig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2, portions being broken away.
The device comprises a vertical cylinder 6 of sheet metal or other suitable material. and of suitable diameter and length, which is supported from a vertical board or back 7 to which upper and lower outstanding brackets 8 and 9. respectively, are secured aboveand below the cylinder. The cylinder has a vertical axle 10 whose terminal. portions are journaled for rotation in the brackets, and said axle has its shoulder 10 seating Specification of Lcttersltatcnt. 'Pg tentgd Apr, 25, 1922.
1920. Serial No. 391,445.
on the lower bracket to support the axle and cylinder. The (y inder hasdisks 1i. and 12 therein near but spaced from its upper and lower ends, respectively, and secured to the axle, the disks having marginal flanges 13 secured to the cylinder, thus supporting the cylinder from the axle.
In order to conveniently rotate the cylinder, it is provided near its lower end with an annular series of outstanding. knobs or iii'ig'er pieces 1 which can beconveniently grasped by the thumb and. finger for turning the cylinder in either direction at any side thereof. i i i Y i A vertical strip 1 5 extends longitudinally along the cylinder at the front thereof, and upper end is secured to the forward end of the bracketB, as at 16', while the lower end portion ot the strip is offset forwardly, as at 17. for the passage oi the knobs 14, the lower terminal or the strip being secured on the forward end of the lower bracket 9, as at 18. The strip 1.5 is close to the cylinder, and in connecting the ends of the brackets 8 and 9-, will serve as a brace for the frame oi? which the strip constitutes a part.
The strip 15 cooperates with the graduations on the circumference of the cylinder 6, and in the arrangement shown, the strip 3.5 is provided along one edge with a series of graduations 20 indicating the amount of. purchase from five cents up, which preferably runs to eight dollars. Thecircumference ot' the cylinderhas an annular series of vertical columns 21 containing pounds and flftC-' tions thereof to be sold, with the prevailing price per hundred pounds at the heads of -when. the column is brought adjacent to the column 20 on the strip lifl the gralfluatimis of the column 20 will cooperate with the graduations in the corresponding column 21, to indicate at a glance on the column 9.0 the price for a given number of pounds from. the column 21. or the number of pounds in the column 21 for a given price from the column 20. An indicator card 23 is clamped to the cylinder at the upper end thereof, by means of a clip 24, and has a pointer 25 indicating the column containing the price per hundred pounds prevailing for the time being and the card also contains the name of the commodity sold. It is thus an easy matter to bring the column to the edge oil' the strip 15 containing the graduations 20, so as to run down the column 2i for quickly determining the calculation. The card or several of them, if used, avoid the necessity of carrying the prevailing prices in mind.
The. cylinder is also provided with other tables thereon underneath the shorter columns 21. Thus, there are columns 527 for graduations of an exchange table, headed as at 20, by various rates o'li exchange, such as from 33 to 37 pounds per bushel. There is also a column 29 for bran graduations, and columns 30 and S1 for graduations giving,- the amount in bushels and pounds of wheat per draft. Other columns 32 contain graduations tor tailings for given fractions and the strip 15 is provided along that edge opposite to the edge containing graduations 20, with a column of graduations 26 giving in pounds, say from six to two hundred and fifty, for value derived from the columns 27, 29 and 32. The tables, as shown, are specially useful for exchange of grain for flour, bran, meal, and the like, and for the sale of such commodities Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A calculator comprising a back, upper and lower brackets extending "from the back, a cylinder located between and carried for rotation by said brackets, a vertical strip secured at its ends to the brackets and extending along the circum'lerence of the cylinder from one end thereof to the other, the circumference oi the cylinder and strip having cooperating graduations, an annular series cl? radial knobs carried by the cylinder for turning same by hand, said strip having a portion oil'set avay from the cylinder for the passage of said knobs.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
