ln accordance with my invention, a driven member, as a gear, utilizable for actuating or driving any suitable member, is driven by a driving member, such as a pinion, which in turn may be actuated Iby another member, such as a handle or hand crank, the actuating member having a lost motion connection with the driving member, whereby the driving member may be moved `with respect to a locking member and when freed therefrom will drive the driven member.
My present structure has 4Jeatures disclosed and claimed in my prior Patent No. 1,274,471, August 6, 1918.
My invention resides in structure of the character hereinafter described and claimed.
For an illustration of one of the various forms my invention may take, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

the frame structure 1 is formed a pocket 4,
'between the inside and outside boards or members 5 and 6. Between the member 5 and the sill 7 is the v transversely extending supporting member 8, the sill being spaced from the wall member 6 to leave a passage through which the window'member 3 may be raised and lowered from and into the pocket 4.
Attached to the lower edge of the window member 3 may be provided any suitablestructure, as for example, a channel member 9, to which is secured a plate 10, Fig. 3, having the slot 11 through which extends the headed pin 12 attached to the member 13, which may be a belt or equivalent, this member being, in the example illustrated, a

Secured to the sprocket wheel 14 is the internal gear 16, the sprocket wheel and gear rotating upon the bearing member 17 carried by the plate 18 secured to the locking plate 19.
Clo-acting with the driven member 16, which in the example illustratedis a gear, is the driving member 20, which in the example illust-rated comprises a pinion 21 meshing with the gear 16. The driving member has a cylindrical shank, which carries the pinion 21, said shank carrying the transversely extending pin 22. Withinrthe driving member is a socket 23, in which is disposed a helical spring 24 whose other end is housed-in a socket member 25 carried by the bearing plate 17, the spring 24 being under compression and tending to force the driving member 21 toward the left, as Secured to the plate 18 by screws 26 is the ohambered member 27 having the sleeve 28 forming a bearing for the cylindrical member 29 having the square extension lug 30 through which and the hand crank member 31 extends the screw 32, on to whose end is threaded the nut 33 which holds the crank 31 upon the lug 30, a handle 34 being provided for the crank 3l. if suitable lor desirable.
Between the collar 35 upon the member 29 and a wall of the member 27 lma be disbetween members 2() and 29, the aforesaid spring 24 pressing the member 20 toward the member 29, whereby the pins 22 are always in engagement with the cam surfaces 37, the pins seeking the depressions 39 between neighboring cam surfaces.
In the plate 19 is formed an aperture around whose inner border are the lugs, such as gear teeth 40, with which the teeth of the pinion 21 may mesh, and when so meshing, the pinion 21 is locked against rotation, and in consequence the gear 16, sprocket wheel 14, chain 13 and window 3 are locked against movement.
In the positions indicated in Figs. 1 and 25 4, the pinion 21 is simultaneouslyiin mesh with the gear 16 and the teeth of the locking plate 19, the structure therefore being in the locking position; and in the locking position, and for all other positions of the driving' member 20, the pinion 21 is in mesh with the gear 16.
The operation is as follows:
If it is desired to move the window member 3, the crank 31 is turned, thereby turn- 35 ing the member 29 with respect to the member 20, causing the pins 22 to ride yupwardly on the cam surfaces 37, thereby moving the driving member 20 toward the right, Fig. 1, causing the pinion to disengagefrom the locking plate 19 by the time the pins 21 come into engagement with the lugs 3S, as indicated in Fig. 2. Thereafter the crank 31 may be turned, the turning movement being ycommunicated by the member 29 through its lugs 38 to the pins 22. which latter communicate rotative movement to the pinion 21, which then rotates the gear 1G and sprocket 14, which then moves the chain 14, causing movement of the window member 3 which is connected to the chain 13 by the pin member. 12. Upon release of the handle 31, the pin 24, which has been further compressed by the aforesaid longitudinal movement of the member 20. will press the member 20 toward the left, bringing the teeth of the pinion 20 into mesh with the teeth of the locking plate 19. and so lock. ing the gear 16 to the plate 19. in this return movement the pin 22 moving along the cam surfaces 37 until they reach their normal position in the depressions 89.
By my structure there is accordinglv lost motion between the actuating member. as 29, and the driving member. as 20. and lduring such lost motion the driving member naanoo@ moves to or from locking engagement with the plate 19.
wWhat li claim is:
1. Actuating and locking mechanism comprising a driven member, a driving member therefor, an actuating member between which and said driving member there is lost motion, means causing relative movement between said actuating' member and said driving member during the lost motion in a direction different from the direction of movement of said driving member when driving said driven member. and a locking member with and from which said driving member is engaged and disengaged during said lost motion, said driving member remaining in driving relation with said driven member while said driving member is in engagement with said locking member.
2. Actuating and locking mechanism comprising a rotary driven member, a rotary driving member therefor remaining in driving relation therewith, a rotary actuating member between which and said driving member there is lost rotary motion, means causing longitudinal movement of said driving member' `during said lost motion, and a locking member with and from which said driving member is engaged and disengaged by said longitudinal movement.
3. Actuating and locking mechanism comprising a driven gear, a driving pinion always in mesh therewith, a locking member with which said pinion is adapted kto engage to `thereby lock said gear, a rotary actuating member having lost motion with respect to said pinion, and means: causing longitudinal movement of said pinion with respect to said locking member during lost motion between said actuating member and said pinion.
4. Actuating and locking mechanism comprising a rotary driven member, a rotary driving member always maintaining driving relation therewith, a locking membel with which said drivnig'member is adapted to engage to lock said driven member, a rotary actuating member'havi'ng lost motion with respect to said driven member, a cam on said actuating member, and a cam engag ing member on said driving member, wherebv during lost motion between said actuating member and said driving member said driving member is moved longitudinally with respect to said locking member.
5. Act-uating and locking mechanism comprising a rotary driven member, a rotary driving membe always maintaining driving relation therewith, a locking member withwhich said driving member is adapted to engage to lock said driven member, a rotary actuating member having lost motion with respect to said driven member, a cam on said actuating member, a cam engaging member on said driving member, whereby during lost motion between said actuating member and said driving member, said driving member is moved longitudinally with respect to said locking member, and a spring resisting longitudinal movement of said driving member during said lost motion.
6. Actuating and locking mechanism comprising a rotary driven member, a rotary driving member maintaining driving relation therewith, a locking member with which said driving member is adapted to engage for locking said driven member, a rotary actuating member having a bearing socket in which said driving member has a bearing for rotary and longitudinal movement, a cam on said actuating member, and a cam engaging member on said driving member, whereby during lost motion between saidactuating member and said driving member said driving member is moved longitudinally with respect to said locking member.
7 Act-uating and locking mechanism comprising a rotary driven member, a rotary driving member maintaining driving relation therewith, a loc-king member with which said driving member is adapted to engage for locking said driven member, a rotary aotuating member having a bearing socket in which said driving member has a bearing for rotary and longitudinal movement, a cam on said actuating member, a cam engaging member on said driving member, whereby during lost motion between said actuating member and said driving member said driving member is moved longitudinally with respect to said locking member, and a stop on said actuating member limiting relative rotation of said actuating member with respect to said driving member.
8. Actuating and locking mechanism comprising a gear, a driving pinion remaining in mesh with said gear, a locking member with which said pinion is. adapted to engage for locking said gear, a bearing shank on said gear, a socketed actuating member receiving said shank, a cam on the end of said actuating member, and a pin on said shank engaging said cam, whereby during relative movement of said actuating member and said pinion said cam forces said pin longitudinally to move said p-inion with respect to said locking member.
9. Actuating and locking mechanism comprising a gear, a driving pinion remaining in mesh with said gear, a locking member with which said pinion is adapted to engage for locking said gear, a bearing shank on said gear, a soeketed actuating member receiving said shank, a cam on the end of said actuating member, a pin on said shank engaging said cam, whereby during relative movement of said actuating member and said pinion said cam forces said pin longitudinally to move said pinion with respect to said locking member, said shank having a socket, and a spring in said socket opposing longitudinal movement of said pinion.
