Be it known that I, FiiaNx SIMA, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of lVhitestone, in fthe'county of Queens and State ofi ew York, have invented a new and Improved Retaining Device for WVindow Panes, of whichthe following is a full, clear, andiexa ct description. e 4 This invention relates to retaining means for window Ypanes and seeks forfone o'f'its principalobj'ects to. provide a simple, inex-r pensive andfeifective means for. positively retainingithe glass in the frame against displacement.
The invention further contemplates aretaining means which is designed to cQ-Operate with a smallquantity of putty for sealing the juncture ofthe edges of the pane with the window frame, in which said means operate to completely cover and house the putty to protect the same against the action of the elements. i
A further objectof the invention resides in the provision ofa combined retaining and housing strip which is preferably construct ed from malleable metal which may be readilycut into the desired lengths to cooperate with windows of various sizes.
WVith the-above recited and other objects in View, the invention resides in the novel construction of the strip and the manner in which the same is employed, reference being had to the following specification, the'appended claims and the accompanying "drawings, in which Figure 1.is a fragmentary. elevation of a windowequipped with a retaining means constructed in accordance with the invention.

-Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 10 designates the window frame provided with the usual rabbet 11 for the reception of the pane 12. The retaining de-' vice consists of an angular strip preferably of malleable metal or any other suitable material which may be employed and which will perform and function in the desired manner. The beveled extremity 17, is then bent inwardly to bring the. confronting faces of the V-shaped notch into contact, thereby disposing the beveled extremity at an angle whereby its pointed end will contact with the pane. This will serve to completely cover and housethe putty and protect the same against the action of the elements and at the same time constitute an. additional and auxiliary means which will positively retain the glass against displacement. It will thus be seen that a simple and effective retaining means for windowpanes is provided which operates in conjunction with the putty for holding and sealing the glass 1 in place and which servesto protect the putty against deterioration.
While therehas been illustrated and described a single and preferred embodiment of the invention, no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details, as it is to be understood that variations and modifications which properly fall within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to when'found expedient.
Having thus described myinventiomwhat I claim is: V
1. An auxiliary retaining means for puttied windows comprising an angle strip having a base flange adapted to be secured to the window frame and a covering flange adapted to be arranged parallel to the puttied edges of the pane, said covering flange having a V-shaped notch extending longitudinally of the inner confronting face adjacent its outer free edge, said notch defining together with the free edge an extremity adapted to be bent inwardly into engagement with the pane for completely housingthe putty and coacting with the glass to assist in retaining the same in place.
2. An auxiliary retaining and putty covering means for puttied windows comprising a metallic strip having a base flange adapted to be secured to the window frame and a right angularly disposed covering flange adapted to extend over the putty, said covering flange having a V-shaped groove extending longitudinally of the confronting inner surface thereof adjacent its outer free edge to define together with the free edge thereof a bendable extremity engageable with the pane when the confronting faces of the V-shaped groove contact whereby the putty is completely housed and auxiliary retention of the pane is obtained.
3. The combination with a window sash, a
pane of glass mounted therein and putty for" sealing and retaining the said glass in place, of an auxiliary retaining putty covering means consisting of a metallic strip of angular formation having one flange secured to the window sash, the other flange projecting parallel to the pane, said latter flange having a beveled outer extremity and a V- shaped groove on its inner face defining between said groove and the free edge of the latter flange an inwardly bendable extremity for covering the exposed portion of the putty and for engagement with the pane.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a device of the character described, comprising a metallic strip of angular formation having an attaching flange and a covering flange, said covering flange having its outer free edge beveled and its inner free edge provided with a longitudinally extending V shaped notch, the attaching'flange adapted to be secured to a Window sash with the covering flange parallel to the window pane to cover the putty and the bevelededge bent inwardly against the window pane to assist in retaining the same in place.
