CALIIERING DEVICE. APPLICATION FILED IULY5I ISIS- 1,413,319, I PatenteaApr. 18, 1922.-
2' Zg gf; i@ i?? SAMUEL BUCHSBAUM, OF CHICAGO, .ILlllrlIhlOIrSf' CALIPnniNe DEVICE.
Appiication aieaiuiy 5, isis. seriai no. 243,330@
To all 'wh-0m. t may concern.:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL BUcHsBAUM, a citizen of the United States, residing'a-t Chicago, in, the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Calipering Devices, of which the following is affull, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formin a part of this specification.
l/ly" invention .relates to calipering or measuring devices and has for its obj ect the provision of an improved device of this character which can of purposes. f l
In the particularfform in which the in` vention is disclosed herein vit is applicable for the measurement -of fingers to ascertain the correct ring therefor. The same mechabe used for arplurality nisni is equally applicable for the measurement of precious, stones, and alsoiias other measuring facilities. V
This particular form of the invention I will now describe in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating the same, in which'- A Fig. 1 is a top view of a device constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a View looking at the opposite side thereof, and
Fig. 3 is a side view thereof.
My improved device consists of a solid plate 10 having the slot 11 therethrough. A slide 12 surrounds three sides of the device and is slida-ble there along, being confined to a rectilinear movement by means of the rivets 13 ,which rivets at the same time keep the slide in its proper shape. The slide also has a finger or thumb piece 14 so that it may f be more readily grasped and shd along the plate 10. The slide also has pointer 15 on one side thereof which (3o-operates with suitable gra-duations 16 which represent ring sizes of therlmerica-n standard type. An expandible and collapsible spring 17 has its extremity7 18 firmly fastened in the slide 12. This spring is slidably guided under two clasps 19, is then formed into a loop 20, and is firmly held near its free extremity by the clasp 21. As the slide 12 is moved from right to left or vice versa. the loop 20 be-Y comes enlarged or restricted, as the case may be, thus providing a larger or smaller circular opening. In this manner the loop is adiusted to the Enger and the pointer 15 indicates in connection with the scale' 16 y to keep Sp-ecicaton of Letters Patent, .Pagnted A1313 185 1922,
the actual size of the. loop in term-s of the American standard ring sizes.
'Ihe lefthand lextremity of the plate 10,
`as shown in F ig. 1, fixedly carries the shell 22 which extends around three sides of the plate 10 and which in part consists of the l guides or clasps 19 through which the spring 17 is slidable. 23 which forms the clasp, 21 to tightly'hold one extremity of the spring in position, this band being continued over the other side of je; f "the shell where in connection with the shellk y is firmly fastened toy the yplate 10.by the rivets 24.
.Theface of the plate VV10 shownfiny Ifig'gxflr l also is provided with millimeter graduav-j"VV tions 25S which extend froma straight edge 2G, preferably extending upwardly from the' Y shell 22. This. straight edge 26fin connec tion with the thumb piece 14, provides abut- .f ments between. which Vstones or othenartif.y i' cles maybe suit-ably measured in connectionVV with the measuring scale 25. Oneedge 'of theplate 10'is also provided withk graduations in-l inches, as shownvat 27, 'soY that furtherk measurement may bernade in con nection with which the Yslide 412 may cooperate. l
The spring 2O has an extendingnger 28 whichrholds out the side of the loop so as the loop in a normally rounded condition.
. From what has been thus described the nature of my invention will be readily clear to; those skilled in the art.
Having thus described one form which l,
tractible spring secured adjacent one of its l ends to said support and having its other end attached to the slide, saidshell having Y means formed thereon to guide said spring as it is moved by said slide. f 2. A device of the character described comprising a support, a slide movable on the support, means for securing the Slide to the support, a thumb piece on the slide, said The shell 22 also has a band Y edge on said support to measure the thck- 10 ness of objects placed between said Straight edge portions, und having en extension thereon cooperating with said second scale to indicate the size of said loop.
n *Witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe 15 my name this 27th day of June, A. D. 1918.
SAMUEL VBUCHSBUM.
