Description

0. R. WAID. SELF OPENING TRAVELING BAG.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 18, 1920 1,413,079, Patented Apr. 18, 1922.
INVENTOR a. R. M/ /D ATTORNEY f UNI TED, 5 mm CALVIN 1a. WAID, on BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA.
SELF-OPENING TRAVELING BAG.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 18, 1922.
Application filed October 18, 1920. Serial No. 417,797.
illustratedis purely formal as it may vary in different types and makes of traveling ha e. I
The frames 2, as at present made, are provided at, their meeting ends with hinge lugs which are hingedly connected by hinge at the top, andfmy object is to dispense withv serve" the valuable purpose ofop ening the present style ofzhingesjasused and to substitutetherefor a very simple, cheapjand effective. spring connection which will not, only take the place of the hinge but, will-also and hdding Open poi'. e 12 s.
The] convenience in packing and unpackopen, is obvious and I propose. toattainthis end without increased cost or'in anyway impairing the" usefulness or desirability of i the bag. "IMoreover the provision of ahinge I of this type prevents the bag being lc arried.---
or left unlatched, which often causes the loss of articlestherefrom My invention, in its preferredembodiggl ment only, will be.bestunderstood'iby'reference to the accompanyingdrawing's which form a part of this specification, and in which Fig. l'shows' a hand bag-in partially'open position to illustrate the spring in end elevation. Y
Fig. 2 shows the bag as fully opened by the spring latch which is here shown opened out to its position of rest.
.the' fold 10 which is provided at each side of the top opening and the spring is of v such design and character as't'o offer no "ing abag, the topxof which will befheldb 70 pins or rivets, but it is my intention to dispense with this type of connection and to substitute therefor the spring hinge which which are shown as interposed. betweenthe adjacent ends ofthe innerand outer'bars 3 and i" and are held in position between them by the rivets 9. The bow is of'such mm ere comprises a central bow 7 and fiat ends 8 j p shape and size asto be free'to'expand-"iir,
serious resistance to the'closing ofthe bag 'but to have suflicient strength, uponunlatching the bag,to open it-out to thefposition shown in Fig. '2 or any intermediateflpositio n' asshown in Fig. 1, andhold it' there. Any suitable spring metal-or flexible hinge straps may be utilized to carry out top the'moment, it "is unlatched. and -will hold the top open in the most convenient above defined.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the spring hinge as shown in Fig. 2.
Similar reference numerals referto simila parts throughoutthe drawings.
I have illustrated my invention as applied to a hand bag 1 which is typical of any satchel, grip, or traveling bag that opens at the top. The top has attached thereto the usual marginalmetallic frames 2 which com- 'prise inner and outer metal bars 3 and 4:,
respectively. These bars grip between them the lining for thebag and also carrythe customary toplock and latch members and handle 6. All this part of theconstru'ction Having thus described my invention, what I claim'as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
l. A traveling bag adapted to open at the top and comprlsing top marginal frames carrying suitable handle and latch means, and being hingedly connected by a spring which tends to open the bag when unlatched. I
2. A traveling bag adapted to open at the top and comprising top marginal frames, latch means for the frames, and a spring at each end of the bag which serves to hingedly. connect said marginal frames the operation as above described-and. when so applied itwill be obvious that} the bag. 1 will naturally and automaticallyf'open itsf 3 and to open the bag When the frames are unthe hinge connections for said frames and latched. V as spring means to automatically open the .3. A traveling bag adapted to open at bag when said frames are unlatched. '10 the top and comprising a pair of outwardly In testimony whereof I aflix my si nature; V5 openin'g'top frames, a latch means for said Y j CALVIN R vi AID.
frames, and fiat springs, each provided with Witness: i an intermediate bow which serve both as NOMIE WVELSH.
