Be it known thaty l, LEON Novak, a citizen of Poland, residing at 548 East 147th St., New York city, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scraping Tools; and l do hereby declare the following to be a tull, clear, and exact description oi the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make land use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon` whichY form a part of this specification.

The present invention relates generally to improvements in floor and veneer scraping tools; and the invention has reference, more particularly, to an improved construction of means for rigidly securing the yscraping blade inassembled relation to the tool. Y

Thev inventionhas for itslprincipal object to provide in combination with scraping tools a novel construction of blade holder and locking device wherebythe blade is securely and lrigidly held `in operative relation to the tool, and in a manner eliminating all tendency of .the blade to slip or .to vibrate, thereby overcoming allk tendency'oi' the blade to chatterfwhen thetool is used, and consequentlyeliminatingchecking of the surface scraped by the blade. Intermediate the upper and lower ends of said back plate 8 is a transverse front bar 18, integrally connected with the side portions of said back plate and forwardly offset therefrom by means o-f end members 19 to provide an intermediate opening or slot 20. Extending through said opening or slot 20, in the front of said back plate 8 is a clamp-plate 21.Y Said clamp-plate 21 is provided in its side margins with notches 22 which engage over supporting pins 23, the latter being anchored in said end members 19 to project inwardly into the slot 20. Said supporting pins 23 as engaged by the notches 22 of said clamp-plate 21, serve to retain the latter in operative relation to the blade holding frame, and also serve to guide the clampplate in bodily forward or rearward movement or play within said slot 20. Connected with the lower edge of said clamp-.plate is a transverse guard rib 24, the under side 25 of which is upwardly and forwardly chamfered. Said guard rib projects beyond the boundaries of said slot`20 and guards the same against the entrance thereinto of shavings, dirt, etc., when the tool is in use, the chamfered under side of said rib serving to turn forward and away from the blade holding frame the shavingsv passing upwardly through said openings 2 of the base 1 when the tool is operated.

The .reference-character 26 indicates a scrapingb'lade, the same, when properly assembled in the blade holding frame', being disposed between said back plate 8 and said clamp-plate 21,'so that its lower working or. cutting edge projects downwardly through the opening 2 of the base 1 to the desired extent. When the blade 26 is properly positioned, the clamp-plate 21 is forced rearwardbodily, to press against the face of theblade, and to force they rear face of the same 'firmly against the back plate 8. The means for so movingv the clamp-plate V21 comprises a set screw, the shank 27 of vwhich-is threaded through the front bar V18 sov that its inner end is forced against the faee ofsaidclamp-plate. The outer end of said set'screw is provided with a head' or finger piece 28 for manipulating the same.

my invention as set forth in the foregoing speeifitation and as dehned in the appended cla11ns, Hence, l do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts as described in said specification, nor do l conine myself tothe exact details ot the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

l claim l. ln a scraping tool, the combination with a base of a blade holder comprisinga back plate, a transverse trent bar provided with a clamp screw, end members for rigidly connecting said front bar with said back plate in off-set relation thereto to provide an intermediate opening, a clamp-plate disposed in said opening intermediate said back plato and said iront bar, means for supporting said clamp plate for bodily movement Atoward said back-plate, a scraping blade disposed between said backplate and said clamp-plate, and a transverse forwardly projecting guard flange adjacent to the lower edge of said clamp-plate adapted to cover said opening intermediate said. clamp plate and said front bar, the same having an upwardly and forwardly chamered under side.

2. ln a scraping tool, the combination with a base ot a blade holder comprising a back plate7 a transverse front bar rigidly associated with said back plate, a clamp plate intermediate said back plate and said front bar between which and said back plate a blade is disposed, means for support-ing said clamp-plate tor bodily movement toward said back plate, the upper portion of said clamp-plate having an upwardly projecting linger piece provided with an upwardly and Aforwardly chamtered inner face for purposes described, and a set screw passing through'said Yfront bar to engage and torce said clamping plate rearwardly into clamping position.
