stares RAIL FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 18, 19 22.
Application filed November 29, 1921. Serial No. 518,504.
To all 20 7mm it may concern Be 1t known that we. Gnonon C. EICH- nNsnHR and JOHN E. NmsNnn, citizens of the United States, residing at Johnstown;
' in the county of Cambria and State of Penn? sylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention is designed as an improvement in rail fasteners and includes features of construction which enable the device to function in a more efficient manner over our issued Patent Number 1383089 granted June 28, 1921. g A coordinate object of the invention is to further reduce the cost of manufacture of the device illustrated in our previous patent as well as curtail the labor involved in the installation of the fasteners.
Another object of the invention is to provide fastening means for the rail which permit removal of the letter from the ties in a minimum period of time thereby accelerat iug repair work.
The above and other objects of this invention will be in part described and in part understood from the following description of the present preferred embodiment of the invention taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein Fig. 1 is a fragmentary top plan view of a rail and tie embodying this invention, dotted lines being used to indicate one position of one of the fasteners;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken through the tie and rail and showing the fasteners in side elevation;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken through the tie showing the position assumed by one of the fasteners when introducing the latter into the tie; and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary top plan view of the tie showing the configuration of the tie openings.
The drawings illustrate a portion of a tie 5 which may be of the usual or any desired configuration and which has mounted tl ereon a rail 6 of conventional design the tie receiving the rail in the usual way and is provided with openings on the opposite sides Gne of these openings indicated at 7, is of oblong configuration and lies coincident with the longitudinal axis of the tie while the other opening, indicateifi at 8, is of a square configuration and intersects the longitudinal axis of the tie. a
Theopenings 7 and 8 areadapted for the reception of fasteners generally designated 9. Each fastener in the present instance' consists of a body or block one end lO of which is formed to provide a foot which has a neck 11 lssuing therefrom .at right angles, the upper end of the neck issuing into a head 12. These fasteners are made of metal and may be of any desired size dependent upon the nature of the work to which the fastener will be put. a i
In using the device of this invention one of the fasteners 9 is firstenga'ged in the oblong opening 7, the rail 6 then urged beneath the fastener following which the other fastener is engaged through the square open iug 8, in a direction transversely to the tie 5, after which the fastener is turned, by force through anarc of about 90 so that one end of its head 1 will'overhang the base flange of the rail. In turning the fastener in the square opening the rail is moved laterally tourge the fastener in the oblong slot against one of the terminal walls of the latter into the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. In order to facilitate inroduction of the fasteners into the openings 7 and 8, the heels 13 of the fasteners are beveled thereby preventing binding of the heel corners on the margins of the openings. Upon reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings it will be observed that the length of the oblong slot? is in excess of the length of the neck 11; consequently when the fastener is engaged through the opening 7 it is moved into engagement with the outer terminal of the opening under pressure of the rail 6 urged thereagninst. When the opposite fastener is mounted in the slot 8 and engaged with the base flange of the rail 6, the rail is securely held from movement on the tie. When it is desired to disengage the rail from the tie it is only necessary to remove the fastener which is mounted in the square slot 8. In removing this fastener it is first turned into a position transversely of the tie following Wl'llCll the rear end thereof is ele vat-ed as shown in Fig. 23 causing the fastenerto be canted to permit the foot 10 to he moved outwardly through the opening 8 while at an oblique angle. The beveling of the heel of the foot of course eliminates binding action. After the fastener has been removed in this way the rail may he slidably removed from the end of the tie without in any way disturbing the position of the other fastener.
From the above it will be apparent that in use of this device fasteners of identical configurations are employed which are engage.- able in openings of different shapes. The shapes of the openings used," however, are in each instance rectangular to enable the openings to be formed a a minimum cost, Moreover, as will be, apparentthis arrangementbf the openings reduces labor in The installation of the railsv and fasteners to a minimum.
It'is'of course to be understood that various'cha'nges may from time to time be made in the device of this invention so as to better a daptthe device for use. in different fields, The present form of the invention,
however, is especially adapted for use with mine tires but we do not limit our invention thereto since the invention is capable of varlious other uses.
What is claimed is I I. A rail fastener including a tie adapted; for the reception of a rail, said tie having openingstherein differing in configuration, andself-retained twin fasteners engageable insaidopeningsand with the rail,
mu fastener including arail receiv- 1ngt1eprov1ded w th an open ng on each side of the rail, one of said openings being oblong and extended longitudinally through the longitudinal axis of the tie, the other of said openings being square and extended transversely through the longitudinal axis of the tie, and fasteners engageable in said openings and with the rail.
3. A rail fastener including a rail carrying tie, a fastener engageable in the tie; on one side of the rail, longitudinally through the longitudinal axis of the tie, and a second fastener engageable transversely through the tie, on the opposite side of the rail, and movableinto a position coincident with the longitudinal axis of the tie;
4. A rail fastener, in combination with a; tie and a rail, said tie provided with an ob,- long opening on one side of the rail and a square opening on the opposite side of the rail, a fastener for engagement in each openmg, each fastener embodying a neck receiv able in the opening, the side walls of said oblong opening being engageable with the sides of the neck of one of the fasteners and the side walls of the square opening being remote from the sides of the neck of the other fastener to permit turning. movement of said other fastener substantially as de scribed. i
