Be it known that l, Grenen ll; CAMP, citizen oft-heUnited States, residing at Leolyn, in the county of Lycoming` and Stato of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail Fasteners, of which the 'following is a specification.
The present invention relates to rail fas teners and particularly to means for holding the rail hrm.
An object of the invent-ion is to provide an improved type of rail vfastener having` means adjustable into engagement with thc rail for holding the same iirmipthe said holding vmeans being in turn, provided with means for connecting it to a tie.
A further and additional object of the in vention is to provide an improved tie plato formed of separable and adjustable sections having` rail-engaging` clamps and provided with improved means for locking the sections to the supporting tie.
Various other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the continuance of the following descripn tion.

Referring more in detail to the drawings, indicates an end portion of a supporting tie` and 11` the rail section to be supported thereon. The invention is in the form of a tie-plate comprising separable sections 12 and 13. Section 12 consists of a substantially heavy plate having its bottom surface provided with a transversely extending rim 14 sharply pointed to bite into the tie for anchoring the plate thereto against any shifting movement during the passage of hear;v rolling stock over the rail` At a point bevond the rib in the direction of the inner end of the plate. the width of the latter is reduced to provide a cut out along the bottom surface as indicated at 15. This cut out is adapted to receive the base flange 16 of the adjustable section 13 which is slidable longitudinallv of section 12 and between guides 17 and 18. Guides 17 and 18 are in- Serial No. 517,659.

Both the top plate and the base flange of the slidalole section overlap the edges of the intermediate portion 24 and provide steadying flanges on opposite sides of the guides to insure steady movement of the adjustable section besides serving to lock the same against vertical displacement. Each section is provided with a pair of vertically disposed openings extending from the upper to the lower surface as indicated at 25 and 26. pening 25 is adapted to receive a suitable fastener. such as a spike 27. the shank of which extends down into the tie to secure the section thereto. rlhe other opening, which is in proximity to a side edge of its respective section receives the shank 28 of a spike-locking member having a radially projected head 29. The. 'head is of a length suflicient to enable it to be swung over the vtop or head of the spike and is provided on its under surface with a cavitv or socket for the spike-head as indicated at 30.
Upon the upper surface of the head` a suitable gripping handle 31 is provided to permit thc convenient swinging of the locking head. rlhe shank of the locking device provided with a spiral groove in which is engaged one end of a pin or stud carried by each section for operation in the spiral groove to cause the lifting or lowering of the shank the head is swung in the arc of a circle. This arrangement is indicated generally by numeral 32 and, as is obvious, permits the locking device to automatically engage or disengage itself from the head of the spike when turned.
ln assembling the invention, the stationary section 12 is rst placed upon one end Plate 23 is held inof the tie and spiked into place so as to form a firm steady support for rail' 11 which is then placed on the rail seat 21 of the section. The adjustable section 13 is then slid inwardly of the slotted endkof section 12 until the rail is firmly clamped to the seat, after which spike 27 may be driven to hold the adjustable section in its adjusted position, the spike lock being then adjusted to prevent any loosening of the head. It Will thus be seen that the invention requires but the luse of a single fastener for each section and when together forms a rail-chair in Which the rail is securely held. It may also be pointed out that the rail is seated on a solid portion of the plate and to one side of the joint between the sections thereby oifering a strong and durablestructure capable of successfully withstanding the shocks and strains exerted by the passage of heavy rolling stock.` f
From the foregoing it is believed that'the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily understood and thereface provided With a rib pointed to bite into? the tie for anchoring the plate and being reduced beyond the rib to provide acutout along the bottom surface, the other section being slidable between guides on the stationary section and having a base Hange engaged in the cut out of the latter, a rail,
clamp integral with the upperl face of the stationary section, a rail clamp Vintegral with the inner end of the adjustable section, a fastener extending thruan opening in each sectiomand a lock member passing thru adjacent openings in the said sections and having a head movable into engagement With the said fastener to hold the same secure.
