Description
F. 1. HACKER. DRAINAGE MEANS FOR COMBINATION GUTTERS.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 17- I921.
Patented Apr. 11, 1922.
Inventor, Frederick J Haqker, 64
SiTATES FREDERICK 3'. HACKER, OF WATER/L00, IOWA,

Application filed May 17,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, FREDERICK J. HACKER, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Waterloo, Biackl-lawk County, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drainage Means for Combination Gutters, of which the following is a specification,
My invention relates to improvements in drainage-means for combination gutters, and the object of my improvement is to provide means for both draining and ventilating the lower troughed member of a combination gutter which has an impervious lining for and closely spaced from said lower element.
The invention herein also constitutes an improvement in the construction of my combination gutter patented September 16, 1919, No. 1,316,301.
This improvement has been eli'ected by the means disclosed in the accompanying drawing. which is a perspective view of a portion of my improved combination gutter, showing part of the impervious lining body removed.
The open top longitudinally troughed gutter 1 may be made of any desired material, although galvanized iron is usually employed for the purpose of economy. To prevent corrosion of the troughed surface of the gutter by moisture or various sedimentary deposits therein a lining strip 7 of flexible waterproof material, such as paper or felt rubberized or impregnated with bitumen. is placed within and fitted upon the gutter to have its raised longitudinal edges received in the inverted upper edge parts 4E and 5 of the gutter, the inverted edge part 5 being bent reversely upward and then outwardly to supply a longitudinally directed stiffening roll 6.
The strip 7 thus constitutes the real receptacle and conduit for water, and thus protects the troughed surface of the gutter 1 from corrosion thereby. The strip 7 being loosely assembled with the gutter 1, there is necessarily a slight interspace between them whereby when the humidity and temperature of the atmosphere have a certain relation to the temperature of the gutter 1, the surfaces of the latter will condense moisture, which eventually causes corrosion by way of the minute cracks through the plat- Specification of Letters Patent,
Patented Apr, '11, seas.
1921. Serial N0. 70,433.
I have provided the following described means to both drain and ventilate said interspac-e:
A narrow medial longitudinal trough 2 is formed in the gutter 1 which receives, collects and delivers moisture condensed on the V trough surface of the gutter. To insure a more rapid drainage, a plurality of small holes 3 may be provided in spaced alinement along the drainage trough 2. The trough 2 may be dispensed with if desired, and merely the drainage holes 3 employed for said purpose,
The drainage holes 3 are important in that they permit ventilation of the interspace between the gutter 1. and the strip 7, that is, air may move through the interspace by way of said holes, which has the effect oi: measurably preventing condensation of moisture, as also in drying and carrying oil particles of moisture condensed on the gutter 1.
Other means may be provided for draining and ventilating the interspace aforesaid without departing from my invention or the scope of its protection.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: Y
1. A longitudinally troughed gutter ele- V ment, and another longitudinally troughed imperforate element positioned therein, the first-mentioned element having drainage and ventilating openings positioned therealong.
2, A longitudinally trougbcd gutter element having a medial longitudinal narrower 9 trough, and an impervious covering element for said first-mentioned element extending across and spaced from said narrower trough.
3. A longitudinally troughed gutter element having a medial longitudinal narrower trough with longitudinally spaced orifices along, and an impervious covering element for said first-mentioned element extending across and spaced from said narrower trough, said narrower orificd trough serving to drain and ventilate the first-mentioned element.
Signed at Waterloo, Iowa, this 14th day of April, 1921.
FREDERICK J. HACKER.
