FRED MILLflRD UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

COIN-CONTROLLED Specification of Letters Patent.
VENDING MACHINE.
Patented Apr. 11, 1922.
Application filed. November 3, 1528. Serial No. 421,443.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F RED MILLARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, county of Kent, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coin-Controlled "Vending Machines, of which theiollowing is a specification.
. This invention relates to improvements in coin controlled vending machines.
The objects of the invention are to provide improved means of insuring the action of the coin on the delivery mechanism and the subsequent delivery of the coin intothe till. A further object is to provide an effective and simple locked case for such apparatus; Objects relating to details and economies' of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming apart of this specification, in which:
Fig. I is a front elevation view of a vending machine embodying the principles of my invention with portions broken away to show details of the magazine and tripping device.
Fig. II is an enlarged detail plan view partially in section with parts broken away, taken on line 22 of Fig. I.
Fig. III is an enlarged detail vertical sectional elevation view taken on line 33 oi Figs. I and II, showing the coin receiving and actuating means in the coin receiving position and the delivery plunger in the initial position. for operation.
Fig. IV is a similar detail sectional'view through the lower part of the machine, showing the plunger actuated by the coin and the plunger pushed in to the delivery position.
Fig. V is a detail diagrammaticview of drawing, 1 isthe base, 2 the back wall, 2' 2 the side walls and 3 the top of the case of the machine. 4i is the front wall of the case to which the lid 5 is hinged at 11, being adapted to fold to the horizontal position over the till and coin control means. 6 is a detachable window adapted to be inserted above the lid 5 and retain it downwardly in position, the same being provided with a lock 6 to lock the same in position. 7 is the door to the till'retained in position by the vertical bolt 8 disposed in a vertical socket 9 in the "front I through a socket 10. in the said door, the bolt being retained in position by the closing of the lid 5 down above the upper end of it. See Figs. III and IV. The door '7 is retained in position only by, the vertical bolts 8 disposed therethrough', the bolts being removable only when the lid 5 is swung open on its hinges, thereby exposing the enlarged heads (see Figs. III and IV) which can then be grasped and the bolt raised entirely out of the vertical socket 10 in the said door. The door is then removed bodily by taking hold of the central knob. One or more bolts may be used, a single one being here shown at the middle oi. the door.
12 is the magazine support disposed within the casing and provided with magazines 1% formed by frontstrip 14.- projecting beyond dividing ribs 15 (see particularly Figs. I and II). Small cylindrical bottles 16 or other cylindrical articles are disposed in horizontal position in these magazines and rest upon the bottom ledge 17. Horizontally disposed plungers 18 rest upon this ledge 1'7 and are provided with engaging oop-s or guides 19 which embrace the bottoni bottle or article in'the magazine so that en the plunger is pushed rearwardly, as indicated in Fig. IV, the same will be disrged downward onto the curved guide l 20 and carry out to the front of the Each bottle or article is retained d by the upwardly projectin o.- rib Each plunger is provided with a plunger rod 22 consisting of an ordinary wood screw having a heady 24. the same being disposed through the upper edge of the parti tion wall 32 hereafter to be described, and held normally in initial position by the coil spl t-1:1 23 interposed between the head 24 and the said partition wall 32.
A. rocker 25 is provided within the casing and is pivoted on the pivots 26 through each side of the casing, as seen in Fig. II. This rocker is provided with a series of coin recesses 27 on its upper edge disposed opposite the heads 24 of the plungers. Notched plates 28 are disposedat the back f each chamber 27, the notches being disposed to permit the rocker to swing freely down without engaging the heads 2% of the plunger rods 22. Perforations 29 are through the back of the rocker so that in the absence of any coin the rocker swings freely on its pivot without engaging the plunger head 2 f.
Slots 3%] lead down from the recesses 27 for the discharge of the coin to the till below. The till is made .up of bottom wall 31 and the rear side wall or partition 32 disposed and supported between the sides 2 2 of the main case. The rocker is controlled by the projecting handle 33 which is secured to the said rocker by screws 34, seen in Fig. l. 7 is spring 25 is provided (see Fig. 11) to return the rocker to initial coin receiving position.
in escutcheon plate 35 with coin slots 36 is disposed on the lid 5 in position to deliver the coins 37 (usually dimes) into the said coin recesses 27. The coin slot 36 is disposed out of line with the slot 30 and consequently any coin dropped through the slot 36 will be retained in the coin recess 27 until the rocker swings and the coin is forced into position over the slot 30 where it is retained by the spring pressure until the rocker swings forward suiiiciently to relieve the pressure upon the coin and permit it to drop.
The complete evolution of the rocker is insured (see Fig. V) by the notched pawl 38 pivoted to the side 9 by the pivot 39. This coacts with pin 40 on the end of said rocker. The lower end of the pawl being notched in sures its proper action when the rocker is operated.
In the operation of my device a coin is dropped into the slot 36 and falls into the recess 27 of the rocker. The operator then pushes the handle toward the rear of the machine. The coin engages the head at of the plunger rod 22 and is held firmly over the a perture 29 and above slot 30. The continued movement carries the plunger 18 to the rear and drops the bottom parcel 16 out onto the inclined guide wall. 20 which discharges the same at the front of the machine. The rocker is then released and is returned to its initial position by the spring 25 (see Fig. H). The pawl 38 locks the rocker from being actuated a second time until it has moved to the front of the machine and released the coin. Nhen the coin is released it drops through the slot 30 into the coin till below.
The whole structure is securely locked by thesingle lock 6 already referred to. All parts are very readily accessible by opening this window, as will be readily understood from the description given.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is: I
1. In a coin controlled vending machine, the combination of asuitablecase provided with a magazine disposed within the case having a discharge chute therefrom, coin controlled actuating means for delivering from the magazine, a coin till toward the front of said machine, a fixed front wall, a door in the bottom of said till through the said front wall, a locking boltthrough the said front wall engaging said till door, a hinged lid disposed to cover down upon the said locking bolt, a removable window 7 disposed to engage above the said lid, with a. lock'a-nd key for retaining the same in place, coacting as specified.
2. In a coin controlled vending machine the combination of a case with a suitable vending mechanism therein, a coin till toward the front of said machine, a fixed front wall, a door in the bottom of said till through the said front wall, a locking bolt through the said front wall engaging said till door, a hinged lid disposed to cover down upon the said locking bolt, a removable window disposed to engage above the said lid, with a lock and key for retaining the same in place, coacting as specified.
3. In a coin controlled vending machine the combination of a case with a suitable vending mechanism therein, a'fiXed front wall, a hinged lid disposed to cover the front of said case, a removable window disposed to engage above the said lid, with a look and key for retaining the same in place, coacting as specified.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses. i r
