2 SHEETSSHEET 2.
INVENTOR Armani! BY way WITNESS:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT THOMPSON, or COLLINSTON, LOUISIANA.
HAMES.
To all 'zohom it may concern Be it known that I, Annular THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Col linston in the county of Morehouse and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hames, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relatesto improvements in hames, the general object of the invention being to provide spring means for connecting the traces with the hames so as to relieve the horse of sudden strains due to the imple ment striking an obstruction and also to make it easier for the horse or team to start the load.
Another object of the invention is to provide a set of springs on each member of the hames, one spring being arranged adjacent the top and the other the bottom of the member with a flexible member connecting the two springs together, with pulleys for guiding the flexible member.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a view showing my invention applied to the hames.
Figure 2 is an enlarged face View of one member of the hames with my invention thereon.
Figure 3 is a section on line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a section on line 44.- of F igure 2.
Figures 5 and 6 are detail views.
In these views the two members of the hames are shown at 1 and their connecting means at 2. In carrying out my invention I provide a hooked projection 3 adjacent each end of each member, each projection supporting a coil spring at. A block 5 is connected with each member, the lower end of said block being closer to the lower spring than to the upper spring. This block is provided with a longitudinally extending passage 6 and a guiding pulley 7 journaled in the block partly projects into the passage Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 11, 1922- 1921. Serial No. 487,048.
adjacent the lower end thereof. An elongated opening 8 is formed in the block and a pulley 9 is adjustably arranged in said opening by having its shaft 10 arranged to engage any one of a number of sets of bearing holes 11 in the upper and lower walls of said pening. A cable 12 ha its upper end connected with the lower end of the upper spring and this cable passes through the passage 6 in the block and is looped around a small pulley 13 on the upper end of the lower spring, and then the cable passes into the opening 8 over pulley 9 and out through the side of the opening 8. A hook let is secured to the end of the cable and this hook is adapted to be engaged .by the trace chain, a portion of which is shown at 15.
It will thus be seen that when the horse or team first takes the load the pull on the traces will stretch the springs so as to relieve the horse or team from sudden strain. The pulleys in the block will guide the cable.
In order to prevent a sudden pull or jerk from throwing the small pulley 13 against the lower end of the block and locking it against movement I recess said lower end of the block, as as 16, to receive this pulley, the walls of the recess acting as a stop to limit the stretching movement of spring. A pin 17 passes through a small hole in the block into a hole in the shaft 10 of pulley 9 in order to hold said shaft in position. By adjusting the pulley 9 in the block the draft can be lowered or raised as desired.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
IVhat I claim is 1. A hames having upper and lower springs secured to each member thereof, a cable having one end connected with the upper pring and having a part slidably engaging the lower spring, means for con necting the other end of the cable with the trace and guiding pulleys for the cable.
2. A hames having upper and lower projections on each member thereof, a spring carried by each projection, a cable having its upper end connected with the upper spring and having a part slidingly connected with the lower spring, a block on each member intermediate the springs having passages therein for the cable, guidlng pulleys for the cable in said passages and a hook connected with the other end of the cable.
3. A harnes having upper and lower projections on each member thereof, a spring connected with each projection, a pulley connected with the upper end of the lower spring, a cable having one end connected with the lower end of the upper spring and having a part looped around the pulley on ALBERT THOMPSON.
