a single integral sheet blankwhich has the general form illustrated in Fig. 4c of the drawings. This blank comprises a portion which is indicated in general by the rei erence letter A and a portion B, and in forming upthe device from the blank the blank ,isbent along the line of juncture C of its-two portionsA and B so that the portion B will extend perpendicularly across oneiace of the portion A. The said portion 13 is bent up to substantiallycylindrical form With its lateral edges nearly meeting, so as to :forma sleeve 1 Which is open at one side as indicatedby the numeral 2 so that the sleeve maybe fitted-to practically any ordinarypenor pencil and may suit ablyexpand if thepen or pencilis ot large d1ameter,:the sleeve-being thus adapted to fitpens orpencils of various cross-sectional diameters and being capable of adjustment longitudinallythereof and being trictionally held 1n its positions of adjustment. At its end opposite its .end which is joined to the portion A, the portionB is provided With a tongue-3 which is overturned as at 4 about that edge oi theportion A oppositetheedge at Whichthe portion :13 is joinedito the said portion A. In this manner the sleeve is firmly. joined and. secured to the portion. in position extending: perpendi'cularlv of one face thereof. V
"The portion ihiIlJbltlDkfOllll is inargin- Y ally of reniforin contour and at one side of the sleeve .1 is gradually bent upon itself along a :line diagonal .to ;the loi'igitu di'nal mediauline of theblank and indicated approximately at D in Fig. 41, to provide a wing 5 having an open side presented in the general direction ot' the-sleeve 1 and located at the sameiside otthe-body of the portion A asis the-said sleeve; PThiswing 5 is broader at its upperportionthan at its lower portion and is'designed tomore orless snugly fitand partly. embracezthe forefinger ot the hand at and adjacent; the first joint of the saidfinger, the sleeve 1. extending beside the fingerbetween theitip and -thefsecond joint SOgtilZtt the pen or pencil Whichis'fitted into the sleeve-will extend upwardly across the forefingerbetween the second joint and thelr-nuckle, the inter-mediate part orgbody vice is so applied, occupying approximately a vertical plane.
The body portion A at the oppositeside of the sleeve 1 is bent more or less sharply upon itself as indicated by the numeral 6 so as to provide a portion 7 which is approximately fiat and'which lies relatively close to the outer face of the body portion A, and a portion 8 which is curved upwardly and outwardly from the plane of the body portion A and provides a rest for the ball of the thumb.
It will be understood that the device may be fitted onto any ordinary pen or pencil and that when soapplied the forefinger may be engaged beneath the wing 5 and the thumb may be brought to bear against the thumb rest 8 adjacent the relatively flat portion 7 of the device and that when so grasped the pen or pencil will be caused to assume the proper angle with relation to the hand of, the writer and he will be influenced to writewith a wrist movement inasmuch-as the wing 5 so confines the first joint of the forefinger as to prevent flexing of this ioint.
In that form of the device shown in Fig. 5 0f the drawings, the device comprises a sleeve 9 corresponding to the sleeve 1, a wing 10 corresponding to the wing 5 and a wing 11 which takes'the place of the parts 7 and 8 comprising the thumb rest of the first described form and which wing 11 is curved laterally outwardly and thence upwardly with relation to the plane of the body portion A of the device and which is open at its upper side and'is designed toreceive and fit the thumb. Of course, in this latter form ofthe device the thumb will be positively engaged and partly embraced by the wing 11 and therefore retained in its proper positionwhereas in the first described form of the device the thumb is to be held against the thumb rest comprising the said portions 7 and. 8. Otherwise the two forms of the device are substantially identical.
' gagement with the index finger and thumb respectively, and a sleeve arranged on one side of the body portion for the reception of a writing instrument and provided at one end with a terminal tongue engaging the opposite side of said body portion.
2. A device oftheclass described comprising a' 'body portion having its opposite ends bent to form wings disposed on oppo site sides thereof for engagement with the the body portion and of equal width therewith for the reception of a writing instrument. one end of the'sleeve being formed integral with the body portion and the other end thereof provided with a tongue bent into engagement with the opposite side of said body portion for holding the sleeve against accidental displacement.
3. A device of the class described comprising a body portion havingone end thereof curved laterally to form a wing for engagement with the index finger and its opposite end bent in substantially parallelism with the opposite side of the body portion and thence extended laterally to form a wing for engagement with the thumb, and a substantially cylindrical split sleeve arranged on one side of the body portion and having one end thereof formed integral with said body portion and its other end provided with a tongue extending over the adjacent edge of the body portion and bearing against the opposite side thereof for holding the sleeve against displacement.
4. A device of the class described comprising a body portion wider than it is long and having its opposite side edges bent in opposite directions to'form wings for engagement with the forefinger and thumb respectively, and a split cylindrical sleeve disposed'on one side of the body portion and of the same width as said bodyportion for the reception of a writing instrument, one end. of the sleeve heing formed integral with the body portion and the other end thereof provided with a tongue extending over the adjacent edge of said body portion and in contact with the other side thereof.
5. A blank for pen and pencil grips comprising an elongated body portion having a substantially rectangular portion connected therewith by reduced neck and disposedv at substantially right angles thereto, said rec tangular portion being formed with a terminal tongue, the ends of the body portion being adapted to be bent'in opposite directions to form wings and the rectangular portion being adapted to be bent into substantially cylindrical form and folded against one face of the body portion with the tongue bent over the edge thereof and in contact with the other face of said body portion.
6. Ablank for pen and pencil grips comprising an-elongated body portion having its upper edge curved in an arc from one end to the other and having its lower edge straight and connected by a reduced neck with a substantiallyrectangular portion arranged at right angles to said straight edge;
ing formed with a tongue, the ends of the body portion being adapted to be bent laterally in opposite directions to form Wings for engagement with the thumb and 5 forefinger respectively, and the rectangular portion being adapted to be bent into sub stantially cylindrical form and folded at PHILLIP R.
