My improvement relates to fire-places having metal fuel baskets and particularly to fire-places embodying afuel basket which is adjustable.
The object of my improvement is to provide a structure in which the basket may be easily tilted for discharging ashes and cinders which do not readily pass between the bars of the basket. I

Referring to the drawings, A, is the horizontal upper part of the the place frame, and A A are the upright parts of the frame. Said frame may be of any usual form, and it is ordinarily a single casting.
For convenience in description, looking; toward the rear wall of the fire-place will. be considered looking rearward and looking in the opposite direction will be considered looking forward.
On the inner edge of each upright part, A of the frame is a cylindrical wrist or trunnion, B. Said trunnions are on the same horizontal line and near the height of the upper edge of the basket. Farther down on each of said edges is a lug, C. Said luo are shown flattened, the broad part being parallel to the plane of the frame. The function of the trunnions, B, B, is to engage the upper part of the basket and supporton the line,

the basket when it is at rest and to constitute ainember on which the basket may turn for discharging the cinders and ashes resting thereon. The function of the lugs, (l, C, is to engage the lower part of the basket to prevent turning of the basket when it is in its position of rest.

At the upper portion of each side edge of the part, D of the basket is ahook, E, which extends rearward and downward. The space within said hook is of suitable size to receive one of the trunnions, B. Farther down on each side edge of the part, D of the basket, is a hook, F, also extending rearward and downward. The space within each ofsaid hooks receives the upper part of the adjacent lug, C, when the basket is in the position of rest.
The lower part of each hook, F, is formed to present an inclined edge, F which has its lower end at the lug, C, when the basket is in the rest position.
Said face aids in movingthe basket into and out of its position of rest.
The hooks, E, are longer than the hooks, F,enough longer to permit the lifting of the basket until the hooks, F, are entirely above and clear of the bars, C, while the trunnions, B, are still within the hooks, E, so that the lower part of the basket may be drawn forward, the edges, F of the hooks sliding on the upper edges of the lugs C, until the hooks, F, are forward of the lugs, C, at which time the basket may be allowed to descend by gravity, the hooks, F, being in front of the lugs, C, until the hooks, E, again rest on the trunnions, B. Then the lower part of the basket may be clrawnforward, the basket turning on the trunnions, B, until the lower part, D of the basket slants sufficiently to cause the material supported thereon to slide rearward by gravity into the interior space of the fire-place.
When the'material on the basket has been thus discharged, the basket is again turned rearward on the trunnions, B, and next lifted to allow the hooks, F. to pass, preterably slide, over the lugs, C, the trunnions, l3, still. remaining within the bearin formed by the hooks, E, said hooks bein long enough to avoid disengagement with the trunnions while the basket is lifted to bring the hooks, F, above the upper edges of the lugs, C. 7
When thebasket is entirely free from the frame, A, A and is to be put into its position of rest, the basket is first put into the position shown by Fig. 5, the upper part of the basket being projected inward between the parts, A A of the frame and above the axial line of the trunnions, B, as shown in Fig. 5. Then, while the upright part, D of the basket bears rearward (toward the interior of the fire-place) against the trunnions, the basket is moved downward until the trunnions, B, B, are within the upper pjart of the bearings formed by the hooks, Then the basket is allowed to turn rearward by ravity on the trun nions, B, B, until the edge, 1?, of each hook, F, bears against the upper edge of the adjacent lug, C. By now pressing the lower part of the basket rearward, the edge, F, of each hook, F, will slide on the upper edge of the adjacent lug, C, such movement forcing the basket upward until the edges, F have passed over and freed themselves from the lugs, C, at which time the upright part, D, of the basket will be 1n the upright position, and whereupon the entire basket will descend by gravity, the lugs, C, C, entering the opening in the hooks, F, and the trunnions, B, B, (already within the hooks, E, E) taking their places in the upper part of the bearings formed by the hooks, E.

may be a single casting. And the basket and the hooks, E and F, may be a unitary casting.
Fire-places already constructed may be modified to embody my improvement by applying to the basket, in suitable form, the hooks, E and F, and applying to the frame, in suitable form and ositions, the trun nions, B, B and lugs, C C.
I claim as m invention:
1. In a fire-p ace structure, the combination of a frame having a pair of trunnions and a pair of lugs below the trunnions, and a basket having upper downward and rearward-directed hooks to receive said trunnions and lower downward and rearward directed hooks to engage said lugs, the upper hooks being longer than the lower hooks, in order that, by lifting the basket, the lower hooks may be released without releasing the upper hooks, substantially as described. 7
2. In a fire-place structure, the combination of a frame having a pair of trunnions and a pair of lugs below the trunnions, and a basket having upper downward and rearward-directed hooks to receive said trunnions and lower downward and rearward directed hooks to engage said lugs, the upper hooks bein longer than the lower hooks, in order t at, by lifting the basket, the lower hooks may be released without releasing the upper hooks, and the lower hooks having inclined edges adapted to slide on said lugs, substantially as described.
