IMPROVEMENT IN UMBRELLAS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. lllLll, dated July 22, 1873; application led June 12, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CoMEGYs GosDn'N Lus- BY, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Umbrella Drip -Gups5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

In the drawings, Figure I represents a vertical central section of my invention, the cup expanded. Fig. 2 represents a side view, with cup closed and covered.

My invention has for its object to provide means whereby a drip -cup may be readily applied to umbrellas which have been manufactured without such an appliance, as well as to those in which such cup has been applied before nishing; also, to provide an improved cover for drip-cups, particularly to cu ps which contract and expand, as described in the patent of Winter and Mueller, March 3l, 1868, assigned to me, and reissued December .31, 1872 5 also, to provide a ferrule or end piece to receive the wear and keep the drip-cup and its cover in place. The nature of my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, having reference particularly, first, to making the stick of the drip cup removable and separate from the umbrella-stick; second, to forming the cover of telescopic joints 3 third, to forming the ferrule or end in the form of a screw, so that it may be inserted in the stick of the cup and serve to keep the parts together; fourth, to certain details of construction, as hereinafter more fully described. Referring to the accompanying drawing, A shows an umbrella with my improvements yapplied. B is the umbrella-stick, which may, in the lirst instance, be made to extend only about a half inch beyond the web, or may be cut off to that length after the umbrella has been manufactured. This part of the stick is provided with a threaded cap, C, to receive the screw d of the stick D of the drip-cup, this stick being of metal, and made either as a cylinder or a tube. The stick D is provided at its lower extremity with the wooden plug E, which is in the form of the inverted frustum of a cone, and has a threaded core to receive the screw-ferrule G, which is inserted after the dripcup F has been slipped on and the cover put over it, thereby holding the parts securely in position. The screw G is formed with a cylindrical head, g, which I prefer to make of steel or other hard metal, to avoid its wearing out too rapidly. H represents the cover, which is made of a series of telescopic joints, h h, which may be drawn out, as shown in Fig. 2, when the drip-cup is closed or contracted; or it may be shut up, or the joints slided into each other, when the cup is expanded. The upper rim of the top section of the cover is made bell-mouthed or flaringyso as to slide over the cup easily, and the sections are prevented from ycoming apart by bending their adjacent edges in opposite directions, or in and out, and by forming an annular groove, as at h', after the sections have been united.

Ihe advantages of the above-described construction are, that the drip-cups may be made as a separate and distinct article of manufacture, and shipped to distant points, where they can be readily applied to umbrellas in course of construction or already finished. The cover being formed of telescopic joints, it does not project beyond the end of the ferrule when the cup is open, and all danger of bending, breaking, or wearing it by contact with the ground is avoided.

The ferrule is easily applied and removed, and the wooden plug forms a water-tight joint.

What I claim as my invention is- 1. A drip-cup provided with a stick independent of the umbrella-stick, so that it may be applied either to finished or unnished umbrellas, substantially as described.

2. A telescopic ferrule, forming the cover for an umbrella drip-cup, substantially as described.
