l Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led January 7, 1921. Serial No; 485,595. 'i
To all whom t may concem:
Be it known that` I, JOHN JUNKUNG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and'State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Key Lock; and IV do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, and exactk description of the same, reference being had to the accompanylng drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which forni a part. of this specification.
This invention relates to a lock of the type that is operated by having a key thrust into it and does not require the rotation of the `lt isan object of'this invention to provide' such a lock that can be made of parts that are inexpensively manufactured.
It is a further object of this lnvention to produce a system of locks wherein the lindi' vidual locks may be varied so Las to require different keys without requiring any' special or complicated 'manufacturing processes to produce the necessary accuracy.
It is a further object of this invention to present to the loperation of the keyV a setrof locking slides which vwill be all brought into unlockingposition when thekey is thrust into place.
It isa further objectr of this invention to provide one spring which shall hold a plurality of locking slides in their respective locking position.
Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures inthe specification and the accompanying drawings.
The invention (in a preferred form) is shown in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
Onl the drawings: f Figure 1 is a top plan view of the lock. Figure 2 is a similar view with the cover ofthe lock casing removed. Figure 3 is a top'plan view of the vlock and key with the shackle of the lock in unlock position. v Figure 11 is a section 'ust about the bottom of the lock housing, t elock having v'been reversed to show this section in plan. Figure 5 is a section on theV line 5-5 of f Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a section on the line 6-6 of Figure 5.
' Figure 7 isv a section on the line 7-7 ofy Figure 5 looking in the direction indicated by Vthe arrows, the shackle being omitted.
Fi ure 8 is a view similar to Figure 7 showing the key inserted. f Y
Figure9 is a d'etailrview` of one'of the sliding locking members, andv Figure l() isa similar view of another of these members. f f
As' shownon the drawings:` n The lock comprises a shackle -1 Y having legs 2 and 3 Vwhich enter into the housing 4. This housing consists of a box 5 and a cover 6 which tits into a shoulder 7 The cover is secured to the box by spinning or otherwise forcing the edge `of the wall of the box over it as indicated in Figures 5 and 6. y At the bottom of the box is a piece 8 which is formed with a slot 9 to receive a s ring 10. The piece 8 is cutawayas indicate Y at 11 to afford room for the movement of' the spring 10. The end of this spring bears against an end 12. upon the leg 3 of the shackle.v
correspond with thercross section of the key' as indicated at 14 in-y Figure 5.
. In theiupper partof thefbox Vis a -piece15 which has portions -16 and 17l cti-operating with the portion 13 of they piece 8 to accurately position'the pieces with respect to one another. The pieces Sandy 15 .constitute filler blocks which serve to support, locate Patented' Apr. 4, 1922.
is higher i and guide the several'moving-'parts within the'box 5. The piece 15 has other portions 18 and 19 which conform tothe outline of the housing 11. Between the part 16 andv the partf18 is a passage 20 which is to accommodate the leg 2 ofthe shackle. recess I21 separates Vthe portion-17 from the portion. 19. The .passage 20l goes entirely across the housing but the passage 21 goes only part-way through the housing because' it needs to accommodate .only theshorter le 3 of the shackle. There are openings 41 an 42 in the housing to accommodate the legs 2 and 3 respectively'of the shackle.
A similar4 The connection between the portion 18 and the portion 16 of the piecelis separated by a series of slots intofbridge pieces 22.
Each of the bridge pieces 22 has a shoulder the upper surface of the bridger pieces 22.
The shoulders 23ail`ord a stop so that the spring cannot pass further to the right than these shoulders.
These parallel slots, provided in the pieces 8 and 15, are at right angles to the passages 20 and 21. .'To provide these slots the upstanding portion 13 of the part`8 is cut as shown at 26. A portion ofthe wall of one of these slots in the middle part ofthe piece 15 isshown at 27. Y The under face of the ymiddle portion o this piece 15 isprovided" with several oblique surfaces asindicated at 28 to co-o'perate with the` oblique surfaces 14E-to make a key- Way. These surfaces vwill be parallel when the two operative faces of. the key are parallel, so that the key is of uniform thickness;
but this is not necessary. l Grooves or ridges may be provided upon the key and acorresponding shape given tothe key-way without 'diiculty In the slots there slide a series of sliding locking members 29. Upon the .lower edge .of each of these members, which lis the edge presented to the reader in Figures 7 and 8, are several recesses. Thecentral one of these, 30, is of a width to correspond with the key. This recess is rectangular so that itsV two ends serve to abut against'the edges of the key and positionA the member when the key isinserted, as will be later explained. The left-hand recess 31 is arcuate. When this recess is positioned near the end of the member, as shown in Figure 9, the arc does not return to the longitudinal edge of the member.
member 29, but terminates in the end of the Ifl the notchv 311s nearer' the center fof themember 29 the arc Will return to the longitudinal edge thereof as illustrated p in Figure 10. The right-hand notch 32 may in the same waybe completed without re turning to the longitudinal edge, or may so return.I ySome of thesel members 29 are located in the housing beyond the ends of the vgrooves 33, beveled as indicated at 33.
- of the shackle.
wWhen the shackle is inserted fully into theY housing these grooves register withl the grooves containing the sliding locking members 29. p TWhen these members are positioned by means of the spring 25 some portions of the lower edges of the sliding locking members will occupy the grooves 33 inthe legs The key 34- of the lock consists of a handle and a shank 35 shown in dotted 4lines in Figure 8. A, cross-section Vof thiskey would bea zig-zag to co-operateA with the key-Way illustrated in Figure 5 or there maybe ridges or grooves on the key to correspond, to a grooved or ridged key way.`` lThe edges of thev shank of the key are made und'ulatedtov form cam surfaces whichv co-operate with the sides of the notches 30 to position each of the members 29 as illustrated in Figure 8. The end of the key abuts against the housing at the end of the key-way to definitely position these -undulations with respect to the several members 29. p
'Whenl the members29 are thus positioned by the key the arcuate recessesv will be in register with the surfaces of the passages 20 and`21v respectively` and one or more vof the members 29 will contact With the spring 25 at their left-hand ends as shown' in Figure 8,
pressingthe spring 25-toward the left and 8 the spring 10 vshown in Figure t will ejectv the shackle. In this movementY the 'spring `will not travel beyond the edge of the housing, being stopped by the edge of the .space 11 but the shackle can travel lby its momentum until stopped as explained below.
A portion 36 of the leg 2 of the shackle is flat as shown in Figures 5 and 6, and the portion 37 beyond this flattened portion is made of equal Vdiameter with the leg 2. Some of the members 29, as illustrated .in Figure 5, have Vthe arcuate notch 31 Vdeep enough to escape the flattened partof the leg 2 but not deep enough to permit the fullsif/.ed portion 37 of the leg to'pass when the spring 1() ejects the shackle 1. The outward movement of the shackle will be stopped by the contact of the head 37 with the iirst of the members 29 whose notchv is not` deep enough to permit this end to pass.
Between the edges 37 and the remainder of the shackleleg 2 is a groove 38 to permit rotation of the shackle relative to the housing. This enables the lock to be readily separated from whatever article is locked thereby, even though the position where the lock is used may not. be readily accessible. The head 37 is provided with a beveled sur- `plane of the base of the yshackle is provided with a beveled surface 40.
Operation;
To apply the lock, the shackle l is passed through the parts to be secured together and then rotated into a position parallel to the housing. The shackle is then thrust inward. K The beveled urfaces 33 and 39 of the head 37 and grooves 33 will contact with the edges of the notches 3l in the members 29 and force the members into a position that will permit the leg 2 to pass. portion 40.01 the end of the leg 3l and surfaces 33 will contact with the notches 32 in the members 29 and force them to a position that will let this leg pass. When, however, the shackle l arrives in its final position the grooves 33 will register with the grooves in the members 8 and 15. The spring 25 will then force the members 29 into locking posi` tion.
l the shackle will then be free from the housing. The shackle may be rotated about the longer leg 2 as an axis to a position in which-y the members which were locked togethermay be readily freed from the shackle.
It will be observed that the only thing that needs to be different in different locks to make each lock correspond to its own key only is the position of the notches 31 and 32 in the several members 29. Consequently, the other parts of the lock may be made by standardized methods of manufacture such las die casting and only thecutting of these notches must be individual to each lock. Moreover, the members 29 canreadilybe positioned in a machine by means of the notches 30 so that the accurate location of notches 3l and 32 need be onlya question of correctly settingone machine. f
I am aware that numerous details of construction mayV be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles `of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention :y l. In a lock, a circularhousing, a filler In the same way,the beveled block therein, arcuate recesses in said filler block, a spring having its endsmounted in said recesses, and a series of vslidable locking members actuated by said spring.
