The present invention relates toa novel and practical method of adjusting the looking pins carried by the locking pluof pin tumbler cylinder locks; and the o ject of the invention is to provide a cheap and efiective method where y the plug is made movable relative to its surrounding casing only by the particular key used in the adjustment.
The form of cylinder locks in connection with which the invention has been develo d and to which it is particularly applic le, is illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein Fig. 1 shows in section the plu with the key in the keyway, partly turn down, Fi 2 shows a cross-section of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 shows a cross-section corre spending to Fig. 2, but of the completed 0 ration. Such plu e comprise a series 0t alined holes constituting sleeves for the pins (1 which are provided with lateral projections v guided in alined holes I) having a spring f on one side of the lateral pro e ctlon c and a keyway on the other side thereof. The plu s are inserted in a round hole 'in a surroun in member, of the diameter of the finished p ug, which is provided with recesses to receive projecting ends of the pins d, so that movement of the plug relative to the surrounding member in one or more directions is prevented by the engagement of the ins while the ends thereof project beyond the circumference of the plug. The plug is freed for movement relative to the surrounding member-by moving each of the pins so that its ends are within the circumference of the plug; and this is accomplished by a key which moves the pins. To make the plu movable relative to the surrounding memher only by a articular ke keys are made which differ om each ot er in the contour of the ortions engaging the pins. A particular ey is then inserted in the keyw-ay and the ends of the pins cut down to the cylinder so that all the pins are within the circumference of the plug while the pins are engaged by. that particular key, with the result that ends oi the pins pro ect from the circumference of the plug when that particular key is withf which yiel drawn ,...or any' different. key inserted. The
locking pin's' are thus'adj'usted to'the particular key. The method.{ used hitherto con-- 'sisted in inserting the-locking ins inthe finished turned plug and whilst. olding the plu stationary filin them down by hand to t e lperipheral sur ace of the lug. This metho however, is tedious an is not always entirely accurate by reason of the hand work. The dilficulty in securingaccuracy 60 by this method is greatly increased by the fact that the (pins are engaged bythe springs to such an extent as to jeopardize the accuracy which is important in locks of this kind. The method according as to the invention is considerably simpler and cheaper and recision work is obtained.
In the met od of the invention the plug blank is made of somewhat larger diameter than'the opening into which it is to be fitted. The locking ins are then inserted and the key is intr uced into the keyway of the plug blank whereby the locking pins are arranged in the position which they assume in the opened 'tion of the lock. The whole closing cyhnder with the locking pins is then turned down in one operation to the extent required to enable it to be fitted into the hollow cylinder by rotating it rapidly. The-plu an the pins are thus turned down so to the esired size, and since the turning tools exert' pressure on the ins in one direction and cut .them' with t e plug, an ac curate adjustment results.
In order to entirely prevent the spring 5 actuated lockin pins from yielding these may be locked 'fore the turning operation by means of shellac. or the like and are again released after the turning operation.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and-desire tosecure by LettersPateiitisz- 1, A ethodpiadjustingthe-locking pins"- of cylinderlocksim a particular key,,oom-* prising insertingthepins iii'a' plug blankof as" larger diameter than" the finished plug,- in: sorting the key in the keyway'ot the plug tomove the pins to their position in the unlooked lock and re idly rotating the plug blank in contact wi tools to turn down the-10c plug blank and pin ends to the diameter of the finished plug.
2. A method of adjusting the locking pins of cylinder locks to a, particular key com- 5 rismg inserting the pins and keyin the plug so 'that the pins are in the position they occupy when the lock is unlocked,.securing the pins by shellac and removing the portion of the pins projecting beyond the circumference of the finished plug. 10 Intestimony whereof I have alfixed my signature.
JOHANNES CRONING.
