YRINTING- MACHINE.
Application led May 5, 1920.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE IVILLIAM MAS- coiin, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 1al- Castelnau, Barnes, London, S. WV., England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Printing Machines, (for which I have filed an application in Great Britain Sept. 23, 1918, No. 15,45%) of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to intaglio printing and has for its object to provide simple and effective means for varying the character or appearance of the printed work or matter whether pictorial or text in the application of ink to the intaglio printing cylinder and in such a manner as-to secure effective nnpressions.
The ink may be applied upon the intaglio engraved cylinder either by a roller revolving in the ink supply and fountain and against the intaglio engraved cylinder, or by spraying on the surface of the intaglio cylinder from a common supply, the superfluous ink being afterwards removed by a scraper or doctor blade in the usual manner.
According to the invention jets of heated air are applied upon the intaglio cylinder after inking and scraping or cleaning and before the impression is taken. The air is advantageously heated to a temperature of from 8O to 100 F. more or less according to the speed of running. The air is heated by passing over or between electric resistance elements' or by other means to ensure precision in the application of heat and the air is passed through a filtering medium for thev interception of dust or other foreign matter.
The invention is illustrated by way of eX- ample in the accompanying drawings in which-- Figure 1 is a plan,
FigureQ a front elevation, and
Figure 3 a side elevation of an apparatus adapted to carry out the purpose of the invention.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawings air for the purpose of spraying on to the intaglio cylinderis derived from a fan f by which air is forced through a casing z' within which an electric resistance heater is mounted yso that on the passage of air there- Specicaton of Letters Patent.

through it is heated from 800 upwards and thence passes through an air filter j and thence into a pipe 7c leading to each end of a tubular casing Z extending parallel to and above the printing couple. A series of air inlet nozzles a are mounted upon a tube or rod g extending across the machine in a position adjacent the intaglio printing cylinder c and air is supplied thereto through the casing Z by means of flerible tubes d, connected to the casing by unions which may be provided with stop valves to permit closure of any union not required for use. The air inlet nozzles a are provided with regulating valves by means of which the supply offair passing through the nozzles may be regulated by means of valve spindles such as a2. The respective air nozzles may be arranged together in groups for the purpose of regulation so that where only a part of the cylinder is being used that part alone may be sprayed, or againthe hase or tube carrying the jet nozzles may be subjected to reciprocation, or more than one series of jet nozzles may be employed disposed in different positions with reference to the circumference of the intaglio cylinder.
T he ink retained within the intaglio cavities on the cylinder may thus be dried more or less upon its surface as required bythe taste or judgment of the operator before the actual printing or impression contact is made, by directing a jet of air in the manner described or a number of jets of air on to any particular portion of the engraved surface desired.
It will be understood that by such means taglio printing surface before impression,
saidmeans comprising aseries of spraying nozzles and means for independently regulating the discharge of heated air from the said respective spraying nozzles, substantially as described.
, 2. In printing machines in combination, an intaglio printing cylinder, a fan for supplying air, an air heating device through which the air from the fan is passed, a common casing extending the length of the intaglio printing cylinder into which the heat Yed air is passed, and a series of spraying dei vices connected to the said casing and from 10 which the heated air is discharged upon the intaglio printing cylinder, substantially as described. i i GEORGE A WILLIAM MASCORD.
