A tool post of any conventional design such as is found on a lathe or other power machine adapted to receive and retain a tool is indicated by a. My device is in the nature of an auxiliary tool-holder provided with a shank adapted to be received within a tool rest of any conventional form as found on a lathe or other power machine. 0 indicates the shank. The tool rest Z) is provided with a passageway e therethrough adapted to receive a tool post (Z for rotation therein. The tool post (Z is adapted to receive a tool 9 through a passageway provided through the post and said tool is held in place by means of a set screw (2Z carried by the post.
Circumferentially of the post, opposite the bearing surface of the rest 6, is a groove in. A pin 2' carried by the rest 6 projects into this groove h so as to limit the longitudinal plan view of the device shown movement of said post, thus preventing its falling out of the rest when the tool 9 is removed, but permitting rotation of the post (Z and a limited longitudinal movement so as to disengage the post (Z and the rest 7).
A rotatable washer y' is sleeved about this outer post adjacent the rest Z). This washer j is provided with pairs of oppositely-disposed notches cut to different levels adapted to serve as seats for a tool. One pair of notches is indicated as 70 and the other of a different width is indicated as 70 Thisdifference'in width of the pairs of notches permits of tools of, varying sizes being utilized. The fact that the notches are cut to varying levels permits the variations in the angle at which the tool may be set. The tightening of the set screw (Z Will serve to fix the tool in place in the notches of the rotatable washer.
In order to fix the tool post (Z at any position to which 'it may berotated relative the rest, one face of the rest 6 is pen forated with a series of concavities f arranged circumferentially around the passage 6. Theseconcavities f are provided in any desired number, sixteen being here shown, which would permit of sixteen different positions at which the tool might be set.
The tool post (l is provided with a flanged head Z abutting the perforated face of the rest 6. This head Z is provided with a proj ecting stud m adapted to be received within any one of the concavit-ies f to position the tool post (Z relative the rest Z). This engagement would'be made upon the tightening of the set screw (Z to fix the tool in position.
A modified form of my improved device is shown in Figs. 6 and '7. This modification consists in corrugating the adjacent faces of the rest Z) and the flanged head Z so that they will register with each other at substantially any position to which they may be rotated and may be locked in such registering position by fastening the tool in place.
In the operation of the device, if it is deside to change the position of the tool, the set screw (Z is loosened, the tool post (Z may be moved longitudinally sufficiently to disengage it from the tool rest 6 and rotate it to the desired position. Upon the tightening of the set screw (Z the stud m engages a corresponding concavity and the post (Z and rest I) are fastened together.
It will be seen that the tool post 01 is permanently carried by the rest I) by means of the pin 73 which rides within the groove h and, being of lesser diameter than said; groove, certain limited movement is permitted said post (5 within said rest 6, but complete disassembly is prevented.
WVhat I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, a tool rest, a tool post adapted to receive a tool andmounted for rotation within said rest, a washer provided with pairs of oppositely v disposed notches cut to varying levels so as to provide a sloping seat for a tool loosely sleeved about said tool post, means for fastening a tool in said tool post seated in the notches provided in said washer, a flanged head on said tool post adjacent said rest on the opposite side from the washer, said head provided with a projecting stud, the face of said rest adjacent said flanged head provided with a series of concavities circumferentially arranged around said post, adapted to receive the projecting stud of said head so as to fix said post in position. 2. In a device of the class described, a tool rest, a tool post provided with means adapted to receive and retain tools of varying size, said tool post mounted for rotation within said rest and provided with a circumferential groove opposite the bearing surface of said rest, a pin carried by said rest adapted to rotate within said groove and being of such size relative to said groove as to permit limited longitudinal movement of said post within said rest, means for locating said post at substantially any desired position to which same may be rotatedand for locking the same in such position coincident with the locking of a tool in position in said post.
3. In a device of the class described, a tool rest, a tool post, mounted for rotation therein and provided with a passageway through which a tool may be passed, a washer loosely sleeved about said post adjacent said rest provided with notches cut to varying levels, oppositely disposed notches adapted to substantially register with said passageway through said post and adapted to serve as a seat for a tool passing through the passageway of said post, a set screw carried by said post to fasten said tool in position, a flanged head on said post adjacent said rest and ad jacent faces of said rest and flanged head adapted to register with each other at substantially any position at which the post may be rotated coincident with the tightening of the set screw to fasten the tool in position.
4. In a device of the class described, a tool post provided with a shank adapted to be carried in a tool rest, said tool post provided with means adapted to receive and retain a tool and mounted for rotation within said rest, means for fastening such tool in place, means for limiting the longitudinal movement of said post "within said rest, means" for locking said post in substantially any position to which it may be rotated within said rest coincident with the fastening of the tool in place.
