IMPROVEMENT IN SHARPENlNG-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,042, dated July 22, 1873; application filed May 9, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, S. F. EMERSON, of Akron, county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Machines for Sharpening Tools of all kinds, of which the following is a specification:

The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in machines for grinding and sharpening the knives of reaping and mowing machines; and it consists in a pivoted or swiveled case, so as to set the machine in any direction; in a movable slotted head, so as to set the grinding-wheel at anyangle; and in the arrangement and combination of parts which will be more fully described hereafter.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of my machine; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.

a represents a pivoted or swiveled base, secured to any suitable foundation, by means of which the machine can be turned freely in any direction. On both sides of the base a are formed arms I) b, for the purpose of giving greater breadth, and, consequently, a more solid and safe foundation. Upon the top of this base are formed two ears, 1, which limit the movement of the standard 2 back and To the upper end of the standard is pivoted the head 3 having a circular slot out through it, so that it can be swung around at different angles and secured in place by the set-screw 4:. Pivoted to one side of the head is an arm, 5, having a shoulder formed near its inner end, which catches against a projection, 6, on the head, and prevents the arm from moving too far backward. To the outer end of the arm 5 is secured, by means of a set-screw, the arm 7, having a slot cut through it, so that it can be adjusted back and forth, and a small projection extending from its inner side, which catches in a groove formed in the side of the arm 5, and thus prevents any vertical movement. The end of the arm forms a sleeve, through which the shaft to which the emery or other wheel 8, for grinding, and the driving-pulley 9 are secured. Pivoted to the side of the head 3 is the driving-wheel e, which communicates motion to the emery wheel through the beltt' and pulley 9. By means of the pivoted or swiveled base the machine can be moved freely in any direction, and by means of the slotted head the grinder can be so adjusted as to be adapted to any desired angle. The projection on the side of the head, limiting the backward movement of the arm 5, holds the grinder in position to be used for grinding knives and other tools.

Having thus described my invention, what I. claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-

1. The cars 1 formed on the base for limiting the movement of the wheel-standard and supporting it in position, substantially as described.

2. The base a, standard 2, head 3, and arms 5 7, in combination with a driver and suitable driving mechanism, substantially as shown.

3. The movable adjustable base a provided with ears 1 1 and arms b 11, substantially as set forth.
