To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Davis BROWN, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of the city of Bucyrus, in the State of Ohio, United States of America, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Coolers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in coolers, particularly to those in which the cooling is effected through the evaporation of liquids such as water and which are designed for the cooling of milk, butter and the like, and the objects 0f the invention are to provide a simple and effective device of this character in which the supply of evaporable {iuid may be maintained and distributed throughout the body of the cooler in such a way as to secure a maximum efficiency in operation.
More particular objects of the invention are to increase the porosity ofthe material from which the cooler is formed and to pr0- vide a special reservoir for the storageof the evaporable fluid.
Further objects still are generally to improve and simplifyT the construction of the device to enable it to more efl'ectually perform the functions required of it.
It consists essentially of the improved construction hereinafter described in detail in the accompanying specification and drawings.

A indicates the evaporating member or container formed of porous material and adapted to absorb an evaporable fluid such as water, and from its evaporation therefrom to thereby reduce the temperature of the contents of the container.

trated, the container is cylindrical in form, provided with an open bottom and shaped to conform tothe shape of an ordinary milk bottle, the upper portion 10 of the container being frusto conical in shape and the outer side of the container being provided with a plurality of radially extending reinforced ribs 11. On the top of the container, a reservoir 12, cup-shape in form, is provided and adapted to contain the proportion of the water for evaporation.
The container is manufactured from porous material capable of absorbing water, but I prefer to construct it in the following manner: Suitable quantities of sawdust.v cork dust, powdered coal and coke, or other suitable combustible material, preferably granular in form, mixed with clay and sufiicient water added to form a stiff plastic mass, which is then molded to the desired form and shape, allowed to become dry and then burned in a suitable furnace in the manner well known in the art, until the combustible portions of the material are consumed, leaving in the place of the combustible substance a number of relatively small voids which increase the porosity of the container.
The container 10 is adapted to sit in a suitable saucer or pan B of any suitable material such as metal, wood or clay, which will also contain the evaporable fluidl In using this form of the invention, for example, to cool a bottle of milk, a quantity of water is first placed in the saucer B and in the container 12. The milk bottle sits in thev pan B, the evaporating member A is placed. over it and preferably placed in the shade where there is a current of air, which will increase the rate of evaporation. The water in the pan B and reservoir 12 should be renewed from time to time as it is absorbed by the pores in the wall of the containerr A.
When it is desired to cool butter or other articles not themselves contained in a water proof container, the article should be placed on a suitable block which will raise them above the water line of the water in the pan B.
