JOHN BARTHOLF, OF HILLSBOROUGH, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT. lN TILTING GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. $11,027, dated July 22, 1873; application filed March 22, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN BARTHOLF, of Hillsborough, in the county of Vernon and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Gate; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 is a front view of my improved gate, and Fig. 2 a plan view of the same.
- The invention consists in the improvement oi" gates, as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, A A represent the main posts of the gate, placed either into the earth or in laterally-connecting ground-posts. Each main post A is constructed of one slotted piece .01 two separate pieces, a, at such a distance apart that the longitudinal pieces or boards of the gate may freely pass between them. Braces B B support main posts A, being screwed or otherwise connected to the upper parts of the same, and forked for the admission of the pivoted posts of the gate. To the bottom of the double main posts A A, immediately above the ground, are secured projecting lugs 12 b at their outer sides. The folding half-gates G O consist of two upright sin or double side posts, (1 d, pivoted at their lower ends to lugs b b of main posts, and two central posts, d! d, either single or double, to which are connected the longitudinal boards or pieces 0 e, pivoted at both ends by bolts f f. The halfgates (J 0 turn, by meausof the twofold pivoting, not only laterally on lugs b, but also on bolts f, folding up into a vertical or inclined position, as may be required. The forked brace-pieces B B are wide enoughfor the free passage of side posts (I d, and support the half-gates O O'when arrived in a vertical position, so that the ends of center posts d d are above main posts A, clearing thereby the whole width of the gate.
The center posts d d may be locked by bolts, hooks, or in any other manner, and are kept rigidly in position by a recessed bottom piece, g.
. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with double main posts A A, of two folding half-gates, G (3, each consisting of pivoted side posts 11, rails e, pivoted at both ends, middle posts 11 d, and supports B B, as and for the purpose described.
