'0 all whom it may concern 1 Be it known that I, Enwann QUINN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Protectors and Fasteners, of which the follow ing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

It has been found'that the lower edges of mens trousers with or without cuffs becomes considerably worn and frayed, therefore it is the purpose of the present invention to provide a protecting button, to avoid the fraying out or wearing of the lower edges of the trouser legs, thereby preserving the material. and at the same time keeping the lower edges. of the trouser legs neat and also increasing the length of service.

It is a further purpose to provide rubber shields or protecting buttons having adhesive faces, for the purpose of securing them to the inner faces of the trouser legs very close to the lower edges thereof, so as to contact with the rear portion of the shoe, and prevent wearing of the material.

he present invention is entitled a combined protecting button and fastener for the reason that while the device is designed especially as a protecting button it is also capable of being used as a fastener, in order to support light household decorations, such as flags, or tinsel upon highly finished sur faces, which may be scarred or spoiled if other means were employed. Furthermore the present device can be employed by mechanics as markers or to hold the straight line without spoiling the surface. It is possible to also use the device for similar purposes.

T'Vhile the design and construction at present illustrated and set forth is deemed preferable, it is obvious that as a resultof a reduction of the invention to a more practical form for commercial purposes, the invention may be susceptible of changes, and the right to these changes is claimed, provided they are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.

The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a view of aportion of a ter in positions to be trouser leg, showing the improved combined protecting buttons and fasteners as applied. F gure v2 is a view showing the combined protector and fastener employed for the purpose of supporting a flag.

Figure 4: is a view disclosing collective views of pieces of rubber and adhesive plasfastened adhesively together, after which the rubber protecting buttons or fasteners may be cut from the connected parts.

Referring to thedrawings, 1 designates a sheet of rubber'material, and 2 denotes a thin sheet of adhesive plaster. In construct mg the protectors or fasteners, a suitable adhesive material is applied to one face of the rubber, or to the non-adhesive face of the plaster, as indicated at 3 in Fig. 4, after which the adhesive plaster and the rubber are securely united by applying pressure thereon. The usual adhesive face of the plaster is exposed and when the two materials are fastened together, a suitable cutter or die (not shown) may be employed for cutting circular disks from the two materials, as shown in the drawings. These disks may be otherwise shaped, for instance rectangular or of polygonal form, and may be employed as shown in Figure 1, to protect the lower edges of the trouser legs, thereby preventing wearing or fraying out of the material of the garment, and hence increasing the length of service thereof.

These protecting buttons or fasteners may be fastened to trouser legs with or without cuffs, and furthermore through the medium of tests, it has been found that heat from an iron when pressing the trouser legs will not hinder the adhesive qualities of the fasteners or protecting buttons, but in fact will insure the adhesive portion. For instance the heat may for the time being soften the adhesive material orthe adhesive faces, but after the trousers have thoroughly aired and dried out, the adhesion of the parts will be assured. For instance the adhesive material between the parts will soften, therefore will more thoroughly penetrate the fabric, and when itagain dies, the adjacent parts will more securely adhere.

with water or other moisture, the adhesive qualities of the fasteners or protectors will not be impaired, in fact they will adhere to the material as firmly as in the first instance.

As shown the protecting button may be used for supporting decorations, suchas flags or the like on highly polished surfaces, without injuring the same.

It is to be remembered that While the device acts as a fastener and protecting button to hold decorations or the like on difi'erent surfaces, as shown in Figure 2, and as protecting buttons at the bottoms of the legs of a pair of trousers, it is also to be understood that when used in relatively considerable numbers, the devices consti tute weights, to hold the bottoms of the trousers or other garment down and to hang straight and not curl under. hen the protecting buttons are used as Weights on the bottoms of trousers, they will act to hold the trousers close to the heel of the shoe, and the trouser leg down in the back, thereby causing the usual scoop at the front of the legs of a pair of trousers to fit over the shoe or the instep of the shoe neatly. It has been found that in devices of this kind that the legs of the trousers will not flap during the movements of the legs of the wearer. Furthermore when the devices or protecting buttons are applied to the legs of a pair of trousers, they do not injure the material to any great degree, and may be removed, and very easily applied. 'lhen again a device of this kind Will easily per niit the legs of a pair of trousers to be made either shorter or longer. In other Words if it should be desired to lengthen the legs of the trousers or to shorten them, the rotecting buttons or fasteners may be detac ed from the material, and since there is but a small amount of adhesive material, it can be removed and the trouser legs can be again turned and the material will not be damaged in the slightest Way.

The invention having been set forth, What is claimed is:

1, A garment provided on its inner face immediately adjacent its lower edge with a plurality of protecting buttons arranged in a row .at the rear of the garment, each button comprising a rubber disc body, and a supporting piece adhesively connected to the rubber body provided with an exposed adhesive face to adhesively connect with the garment to hold said body in a fixed position.

2. As an article of manufacture, a button comprising a rubber body of disc form, a correspondingly supporting disc piece adhesively connected to the body provided with an exposed adhesive face adapted to adhesively connect with the garment on the inner surface adjacent the extreme lower edge of a garment.
