Application filed August 6, 1920. Serial No. 401,702.
(GRANTED UIIDEB. THE PROVISIONS OF 'IHE ACT OF MARCH 3, 1921, 41 STAT. L., 1313.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR THEODORE SMITH, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Sheffield, in the county of York, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scissors, (for which I have filed an application in Great Britain, No. 139,086, dated June 4, 1919,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to scissors of the kind having folding or collapsible bows which can be caused to lie against the shanks of the scissors so that such implements occupy relatively little space when being stored or carried in a case. My improvement consists in constructing scissors of the above named kind in which the shanks are set down from a point below the pivot, and two of the three members comprlsing each collapsible bow are pivoted to the set down faces of the shanks, so that the said bows can be folded to lie thereupon, resulting in a neat and compact arrangement. My improvement also includes the provision of outstanding lugs on the shanks to limit the movement of the bows when opened out to their fullest extent.
My invention will be better understood on reference to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a pair of scissors made according to my invention, with the bows opened out ready for use.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation with the bows folded.
Fig. 4 shows a case suitable for the reception of the scissors.
The same letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
According to my invention I form each blade of my improved scissors with a straight narrow shank, a, set down from a a point a short distance immediately below the pivot, 5. Near the lower end of each shank and also at a convenient distance below the point, a I pivot straight or sli htly bowed members, 0, and d, respectively to which is pivoted a similar y Shaped oonnect ing member, 6. It should be particularly noted that the members, a, and d, are connected to the upper face of the shanks, a, and that the member, 6, lies on top of the members, 0, and (Z. This is a very necessary formation in order to obtain the compact folding which characterizes scissors made according to my invention. 7 These pivoted members,c, (Z, and 6, can be moved so as to form in conjunction with the portions of the shanks, a, to whichthey are adjacent loops or bows standing out at right angles to the shanks (thus providing finger and thumb receptacles), as shown in Fig. 1, or they may be collapsed or folded so as to lie along each shank and so fill up (or approximately fill up) the space provided by the set down portion of the shanks below the point, a as before mentioned and as shown in Fig. 3.
Each of the shanks, a, has at its lower end an outstanding lug, (1 against which the outer sides of the members, 0, bear when the bows are fully opened out as shown in Fig. 1, the said lugs serving as stops to limit the movement of the bows when they have improved construction may be stored in a relatively small metal case of oblong cross section and closed by a cap of similar section.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and 1n what manner the same 1s to be performed, I declare that what I claim is:-
1. Scissors of the folding bow type having the shanks set down from apoint a short distance immediately below the pivot and the bows formed of three members,
the two horizontal members of the folding bows being pivoted to the upper face of the shanks, and. the vertical members be ing pivoted to the upper faces of the said zontal' members of the folding bows bear horizontal members, in the manner and for when opened to their full extent, substanthe purposes substantially as herein detiallyes herein described. p 10 scribed. l p 'In testimony whereofI have signed my 2. Scissors of the folding bow ty e hav name to this specification. ing at the lower ends of the shan s out- 7 standing lugs against which the lower hori i "ARTHUR THEODORE SMITH.
