Definitions
- Our invention relates to a spiral spring attached to the slat forming a part of the lower frame of the bed bottom, the spring being provided with a double central stem formed of the same wire as that constituting the spring passing through the slat, and thus adapted to guide the spring as it is depressed, and prevent a swaying or lateral motion, which renders ordinary spiral bed-springs objectionable.

Description
1. A. VAN WERT e; A. GRUOLEY. Bed-Bottom Springs.
NO. 140 975 Patentedjuly15,1873.
UNITED STATE$ PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. VAN WERT AND ARTHUR OROOLEY, OF ELMIRA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BED- BOTTOM SPRINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,975, dated July 15, 1873; application filed May 22, 1873.
' a full, clear, and exact description of our said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of referen ce marked thereon.
Our invention relates to a spiral spring attached to the slat forming a part of the lower frame of the bed bottom, the spring being provided with a double central stem formed of the same wire as that constituting the spring passing through the slat, and thus adapted to guide the spring as it is depressed, and prevent a swaying or lateral motion, which renders ordinary spiral bed-springs objectionable.
Figure l is a side View of our improved spring. Fig. 2 is a top View of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts of the invention in all the views.
A is the bed-slat. B is the spring attached to the slat at b. The spring is formed as an ordinary spiral until it reaches its greatest height, when it turns down at c at a right angle with the top of the spring passing through the slat a short distance and then returns to the top of the spring, where-it is bent, as shown at c. A double stem. 0, is thus formed. The spring, having a fiat top, presents a convenient surface upon which to re st the cap piece D, which is used when upper slats are used, and removed when it is desired to sew a canvas cover directly to the spring. By doubling the central stem greater rigidity is imparted to the spring, and a more even surface given thereto for the reception of the cap piece or canvas cover. The double stem is made to pass through the slat such a distance as will admit of the insertion of a pin, cl, to prevent the pulling or starting up of the spring from the slat. I
We claim as our invention- In combination with the slat A, the spring B having the doubled stem 0 and key d, either with or without the cap piece D, as herein shown and specified.
In testimony whereof we have hereto subscribed our names this 17th day of May, 1873.
