To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MELVIN F. COLBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Claremont, in the county of Sullivan and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reamers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to reamers.
It has for its object to provide a reaming tool of improved construction whereby thesame may be rendered automatically selfcentering regardless of the alignment of the machine, and whereby the cutting edges of the tool may be readily and conveniently adjusted. A further and more specific object of my invention is to provide an improved, simplified, and rugged construction wherein the cutting mechanism is carried in a readily removable and preferably floating unit which may be readily and cheaply manufactured, and wherein the cutting elements carried by said unit may be conveniently adjusted, a single adjustin and float limiting member preferably being used. These and other objects of my invention will, however, hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown, for purposes of illustration, one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice.
In these drawings,- Fig. 1 is a plan view, partially in section, of a reamer head equipped with my ,improvement.

In this illustrative construction, I have "shown areamer holder 1 referablyhaving Suitable: transversely ispo'sed cut-away portion 2g'onjthe surface and a suitable transverserecess 3, formed intermediate theends of this cut-away portion. Carried in this recess ;3 and preferably reciprocable thereinun'der a .suitable cover plate 4, carried in the cut-away ortion 2 and attached tothe holder by suita 1e attaching screws 5, is my improved reamer unit, hereinafter described, the same likewise being provided with improved adjusting mechanism, also hereinafter described.
This unit is shown in perspective in Fig. 4 and, as illustrated in this and other figures, comprises a lower plate 6, preferably transversely grooved at 7, andan upper plate 8, preferably transversely grooved at disposed tool members 12 and 13 reciproca-' ble laterally in the grooves mentioned and having their cutting edges 14 and 15 disposed parallel to the axis of the holder 1. As illustrated, each ofthese members is also provided with an inclined inner face 16, preferably in the form of a beveled corner adapted to be engaged by a suitable wedge to adjustv the tools laterally. As shown, herein, these tools are operatively connected to a longitudinally movable threaded. ad-
justing member or bolt 17 threaded into a suitable correspondingly threaded opening 18 in the front walls of the members 6 and 8. If desired, a suitable wedge member, 17 (see Fig. 5) may be integrally formed on the inner end of the member 17 and adapted to engage the surfaces 16 on the tools, but
preferably a separate wedge member 19 is provided adapted to be forced inward by thc member 17 and thereby cause the two members 12 and 13 to be simultaneously moved laterally in the grooves 7 and 9 to increase the width of the cut as desired. In the preferred form shown, .it will also be noted that the member 17 extends through a suitable opening 20 in the front end of the holder 1, ofslightly greater diameter than the threadedjopening 18 in the members 6 and 8, in such a manner as to enable this member, and therefore the tool carrying unit, 0 have a limited floating movement with pect to the holder 1.
In the use of my improved construction, it will be noted that whenever it is desired to adjust the width of cut it is only necessary to rotate the member 17 in the desired direction in order to cause the two members 12 and 13 to be simultaneously adjusted out ward in the grooves 7 and 9, the wedge member 19 acting upon the'surfaces 16 thereof in such a manner as to force the same outward. Obviously, whenever the cutting edges 14 and 15 have been protruded too far, or it is desired for any other reason to reduce the Width of the tool, this may be readily accomplished by releasing the member 17 and then driving the members 12 and 13 inward to the desired degree. Through the use of the floating unit and the floating action of the member 17, it will also be particularly noted that the unit .is adapted. to float in such a manner as to cause the same to be self-centering within relatively wide limits,'thereby enabling it to operate upon machines which are not accurately aligned.
In connection with my improved construction, attention isalso directed to. the fact that whenever for any reason it is desired to remove the tools 12 and' 13, the same are readily accessible, it only being necessary to remove the member 17 and then push out the entire unit comprising the members 6 and 8, in order to substitute a new unit. It will also be observed that access may be readily had to the members 12 and 13 by simply removing the upper plate 8. These and other advantages of my improved and simplified construction will, however, be clearly apparent to th se skilled in the art.
While I have in this application specifically described one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice, it is to be understood that the same is used for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit, it being my intention to include all such modifications within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 4
1. In a reamer, a' holder, a tool unit, a
plurality of oppositely disposed tools laterally adjustable in said unit, and means for adjusting said tools in said unit, said means operating to hold said unit in said holder.
2. In a reamer, a holder, a tool unit, a
plurality of oppositely disposed tools lateradjusting said tools, said means being op-- erative to hold said tools in floating relation with respect to said holder.
4. In a reamer, a' holder, a plurality of oppositely disposed tools laterally adjustable with respect to each other therein, and
a single means having a floating seat in said holder for adjusting the relative positions of said tools.-
5. Ina reamer, a holder, a tool unit, a plurality of oppositely disposed tools laterally adjustable in said unit, and a single means for. holding said unit in operative position and adjusting said tools in said unit.
i 6.- In a reamer, a holder, a tool unit, a plurality of oppositely disposed tools laterally adjustable in said unit, and a single means operable when said unit is in position in" said holder for holding said unit in operative position and adjusting said tools in said unit.
7. In a reamer, a holder, a tool unit having a floating mounting in said holder, a plurality of oppositely disposed tools laterally adjustable in said unit, and means comprising a member bodily movable in a-direction transverse to the lateral movement of said tools'for 'adjusting said tools, said means being operable when said unit is in operative position in said holder;
8. In a reamer, a holder, a tool unit having a floating mounting in said holder, a
plurality of oppositelydisposed tools laterable in said unit, and a single means for adjusting said tools in said unit and for limiting the floating movement of said unit in said holder.
11. In a reamer, a holder, a tool carrying unit freely laterally movable therein, oppositely disposed tools laterally adjustable in said unit, and means movable in a direction which makes an angle with the path of adjustment of'said tools, and is parallel to the axis of said holder for adjusting said tools in said unit, said means being adjustable from the front of said holder.
12. In a reamer, a holder, a tool carrying unit laterally reciprocable therein, oppositely disposed tools laterally adjustable in said unit, and means including a single member accessible from the forward end of said holder and having a floating fit therein for adjusting said tools in said'unit.
13. In a reamer, a holder, a tool carrying unit laterally-reciprocable therein and having a plurality of tools therein, and a. tool ad ustmg member threaded into one of said elements and having a floating fit in the other.
14. In a reamer, a holder, a tool carrying unitlaterally reciprocable therein, a lurality of laterally adjustable tools carrie by said unit, and a tool adjusting member threaded into said unit and having a floating fit in said holder.
15. In a reamer, a holder, a tool carrying unit laterally reciprocable therein, oppositely disposed tools laterally adjustable in said unit, and means including a single longitudinally disposed adjusting member threaded in said unit and having a floating fit in said holder for adjusting said tools in said unit. 16. In a reamer, a holder, a tool carrying unit movable laterally thereof, oppositely disposed tools adjustable laterally in said unit and having beveled inner adjacent surfaces, and tool adjusting means engageable with said surfaces having a floating lit in said holder and threaded into said unit.
17. In a reamer, a holder, a tool carrying unit reciprocable laterally thereof, oppositely disposed tools adjustable laterally in said unit, and means for adjusting said tools including a longitudinally movable wedge engageable with said tools and having a single floating adjusting member therefor disposed longitudinally of said holder and threaded into said unit.
18. In a reamer, a holder, a tool carrying unit movable laterally thereof, oppositely disposed tools adjustable laterally in said unit and having beveled inner surfaces, a longitudinally movable wedge member carried in said unit and engageable with said surfaces, and a separate floating adjusting member for said tools carried by and disposed longitudinally of said holder and threaded in said unit.
19. In a reamer, a tool unit comprising upper and lower plates cooperating to form a laterally disposed tool carrying groove, oppositely disposed tools in said groove, and means including a single adjustable member threaded in said unit and disposed substantially at right angles to said tools for adjustin the latter in said unit.
20. n a reamer, a tool unit comprising upper and lower plates cooperating to form a laterally disposed tool carrying groove, oppositely disposed tools carried in said groove and having sloping inner surfaces, and a wedgemember engageable with said inner surfaces and having a single adjustable member threaded in said unit and disposed substantially at right angles to said tools for adjusting said wedge member.
21. In a reamer, a holder having a transversely disposed recess opening on its oppo site sides, a tool unit carried in said recess and reciprocable in either direction relative to'the walls thereof, laterally disposed and adjustable tools carried in said unit, and means for adjusting said tools including a single adjusting member extending into said unit having a floating mounting in said holder.
22. In a reamer, a holder having a transverse recess therein, a tool carrying unit movable transversely in said recess, a cover plate for said recess, laterally adjustable tools carried in'said unit, and means for adjusting said tools laterally including a single longitudinally disposed member threaded into said unit and having a floating fit in said holder.
23. In a reamer, a holder, a floating tool carrying unit movable laterally thereof, oppositely disposed tools adjustable laterally in said unit and having beveled inner surfaces, a longitudinally movable wedge member carried by said unit and engageable with said surfaces, a single adjusting member for said tools carried by and disposed longitudinally of said holder, and means on said holder and engageable with said adjusting member for limiting the lateral movement of said unit.
24. In a reamer, a holder, a tool carrying unit, a plurality of oppositely disposed tools laterally adjustable in said unit, means engaging said tools and movable relative thereto for effecting lateral adjustment thereof, and means moving with said unit and having a limited freedom of movement with respect to said holder operatively engaging said first mentioned means.
