ALE A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLAMPING DEVICE FOR HOLDING CANS. JARS. BOTTLES. ETC.
Application filed August 15, 1921.
tles, etc., and the objects of the invention are to provide a simple and effective device by which tin cans containing canned goods may be held while the top is being cut off with a can opener, and which may also be used to hold other articles such as glass sealers while unscrewing the top.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a simple and effective device of this character which may be readily attached to an ordinary kitchen table and by means of which the can, jar. or bottle may be firmly held in place while it is being opened.
Further objects still are to provide a device of this character which may be constructed at low cost and with few but simple parts all well designed to perform the functions required of them.
And it consists essentially of the improved constructionand arrangement of parts hereinafter described in detail in the accompanying specifications and drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention, the table to which it is attached being shown in dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a, sectional elevation.
Figure 3 is a. plan view.
Figure 4 is a plan view showing the protecting members thereon, which are used when the device is used to retain glass bottles or the like.
Figure 5 .is a perspective view of one of the protecting members.
Figure 6 is a pirspective view of the other protecting mem r.
In the drawings, like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Referring to the drawings:
A indicates the base, Which I have snown of open form constructed of suitable metal or other material having sufficient rigidity and being formed with a central opening 10.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 14, 1926?.
Serial No. 492,625.
l1 and 12 indicate retaining flanges on oppo site ends of the base which are curved to correspond to the general shape of the article to which it is attached, such general shape being circular. The flange 11 has a plurality of parallel engaging ribs 13 in the face thereof, these being of substantially V-shape.
B indicates the clamping member carried by the flange 12 which is actuated by a screw 14 which have a swivel connection with the member B at one end and which extends through a. suitable threaded perforation l5 inthe flange 12, the outer end of the screw being formed with a thumb nut or crossplece 16 by which it may be conveniently turned. The face plate 15 of the clamping member B is conveniently reinforced on the outer side at the point through which the screw 14 extends, this reinforcement being in the nature of a diamond-shaped boss or projection 17. The flange 12 at the point thmugh which the screw 1st extends is also conveniently formed with a diamond-shaped reinforcing boss 29.
The flange 12 and base A are further connected to a retaining clamp sleeve comprising an L-shaped arm 18 designed to extend beneath the edge of the table D to which the device is to be attached, having a clamping screw 1.) extending through the extremity of the L-shaped arm, the top of the screw having a swivelling connection with a disc 20 having radially V-shapcd engaging ribs 21 thereon, the bottom of the screw being formed with a thumb nut or cross-piece 22. The L-shaped arm is conveniently formed with an outwardly extending reinforcing rib 23.
I have found it convenient to cast the base A, flange 12 and clamp C all in one piece.
The inner face of the face plate 15 is formed with a plurality of parallel V-shaped engaging ribs 2-4. To prevent these ribs and the ribs 13 injuring, scraping or gritting glass containers, I conveniently provide protecting members 25 and 26 of rubber or other suitable resilient material curved to conform to the shape of the flange 11 and plate 15 respectively the member 25 being formed with hook-s aped end flanges 27 designed to engage the end of the flange 11. and; the member 26 being formed with hook-shaped end flanges 28 designed to engage the end of the face plate, 15.
In using the device, it is attached to a kitchen table or other projecting board by means of the retaining clamp {1. The can, sealer or jar is then placed in the device and the clamp B is tightened, firmly retaining the same in position. The diameter of the hase is such as to hold the ordinary sized cans which are usually in the neighborhood of 4% or thereabouts, the screw 14 being of suiiicient length to permit the diameter between the flange 11 and the plate 15 to he reduced to approximately in. so that the smaller sizes of cans, jars or bottles, can he held tightly in position.
It Will be seen that the parts which are subjected to strain are effectually protected by the reinforcing means hereinbefoi'e described.
Metallic parts be made of aluminum malleable casting, or any metal suitable for the purpose.
As many changes may be made in the above construction and many apparently Widely diilerent embodiments of my invention within the scope of the claim constructed Without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense ,e-eeese ing screw extending through the threaded projection, the said screw having swivel connection with the member at one end and a face plate on the clamping memberformcd with a plurality of engaging ribs and a pair of supporting members of resilient material curved to conform respectively to the flange on the base and to a face plate on the clamp ing member and being formed with hook shaped end flanges designed to engage the end of the flange or memberto which they are attached, and a clamp connected to the base member all as substantially herein set forth and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT BEEDHAM. Witnesses JOHN MGA LLIsTER, SARA L, EEEDHAM.
