UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE,
CHARLES I. TARKET, OI WATERBUBY, CONNECTICUT;
'' 7 LINE on. CABLE UNION. H
T 0 all whom z'tmay concern: V
Be itk'nown that 1, CHARLES; L. TARKn'r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Waterbury, in the county of'New Haven andStateof Connecticut, have. in vented certain new and useful Improvementsin Line or Cable Unions, which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification.
-This invention relates to improvementsiin devices of that class available fOr'adjustably securing together the opposite end-portions, or separate segments, of .a line, cable or the like, such devices being well-designated line or cable unions.
The. object of this invention is to provide ,a line or cable union which shall be simple and comparatively inexpensive. as regards its construction; durable, eflicient and reliable in practical service; measurably automatic in action; and which shall possess thereof, asalon ithe dotted line analogous constructions.
certain well-defined advantages over prior The invention consists in certain lcombi nations, details and parts whereby, together with the .novel disposition and relative arrangementof said parts, the-attainment of the foregoing object is rendered practicable, allof which-will be hereinafter more specifically referred to and hereto appended.
, The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein: V
.Fig. 1 is a face or diagrammatic view of a sheetsmetal blankusablein the formation of the channeled body of a line or cable union embodyingmy said improvements.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the union,
Fig. .3 is a central, vertical, longitudinal section of same, as along the dotted line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a vertical, transverse section eferring tothe'accompanying draw ng, wherein similar reference-numerals denote like parts-throughout. the; several views, 21, in carrying out my present-invention, make use of a body, duly elongated and essentially comprising opposite side-memberso, 5, upstanding in parallelism and connected along set forth in the claims V Specification of Letters Patent. P3tented Mar, 14, 1922, Application filed November 15,
1919. Serial No. 338,195.
opposite, longitudinaledges thereof by an primarily duly pierced and drawn up, as
through the medium of suitable piercing and blanking dies, and the drawing-up proo ess being'such as to-ensure' for the com;-
pleted body the general channeled form herein contemplated,.the opposite; side-members; 5, 5' being" held duly spaced apart through the medium of the tie-member 5", I
as will be readily understood.
Primarilythe blank aforenamed is so pierced in the process ofits formation as to provide therefor opposite, elongated openings. 6, 6, arranged convergent forwardly to the longitudinal center-line of the blank, and sequentially divergentrearwardly thereto, wherebythe openings 6, 6:become, upon the blank aforenamed being drawn; up as stated, positioned at the oppositesldes of the body of the device, inathe opposite sldemembers thereof, and inclined; each from a pointrelatively near the free margin of the side-member wherein it is formed, to and terminates ata point'sultably adjacent the tie-member 5 6, is a pintle "intersecting the opposite side-members of the device by way ofthe openings 6, 6.,and freely workable to and fro within said openings,=said pintle having a relatively small sheave or roller '7 mounted firmly thereon, as by a drive-fit,
and the same and the sheave or roller car-w,
'ried thereby constituting, in co-operation with the openings 6, 6', a line-clamp, normally automatic and active in the general operation-of the device.
It maybe here pointed out that line-clamp, is held, by finger-pressure or when the otherwise, retracted, say, .to' the opposite termini of the openings 6, 65 mostelevated from the tie-memberfif, an end-portioniof Y "a line, rope, cable, or the like, may be .passedh; Kendwise within ;the channel of-the ibody aforename'd, from the advance end thereof, and hence caused to .lie between said line- ;clamp-and the inner faceof the tie-member t 5". said fline-clamp being now released,
the same will, the device being duly held by the user to this end, move automatically forwardly and downwardly into clamping or locking engagement with the line, or the like, still positioned between the same and the tie-member aforenamed, such movement forwardly and downwardly on the partof the line-clamp being determined by the openings 6, 6, wherein the pintle of the line-clamp operates, and the afore nam ed clamping or locking effect being intensified proportionately to any t'endencyo'n the part of the line or the likeso clamped or locked to retreat, either through contraction of the line, or the like, itself, due to weather or other conditions, or any retractive stress otherwise brought to bear thereon, from its occupancy of, or positioned within, the body aforenamed.
The line or the like may now be released from the above-mentioned clamping or looking efi'ect, by retracting along the openings 6, 6, by finger-pressure or "otherwise, the
line-clamp of the device, or by exerting on the clampedor locked line, or the like, a
suitable, direct pull, as will be clearly understood,
To facilitate the manipulation of the clamped line, or the like, for the release thereof from the clamping effect aforenamed, I provide the body of the device with a leading-off guard 7', best fitted with'an active face conforming approximately to the arc of a circle, and, in some instances, taking a. general volute or clock-spring form, the same being constructed integral with the body of the device, by preference, as by oppositely slitting the blank aforenamed, along, say, the lines 8, 8', for the formation of twintermediate strip 8" connected with said body. particularly thetie-member 5 thereof, only at its inner end and'being curved or turned suitably downwardly and forwardly, or coiled more or less upon itself as found convenient or desirable in praeticeQthe rear.
face'of such guard constituting its active face, and downwardly along which passes the line or tlljllkG to be manipulated, to a position more or less returned relatively thereto, allgas clearly illustrated in Fig. 3,
Any appropriateinediuni may beavailed of for facilitating the attachment of the device, asis needful in practice, to'the'endportion .of the line, or the like,-opposite to the end portion thereof to be clamped as herein explained, as in the case of as'o-called pulley clothes-line, or to the end-portion :of a separate section 'ofanother line, or the like, though to'the attainment of this end I provide the body aforenamed, and formed particularly in the side-members thereof, with transversely registering p-in re'ceivin- g openings 9,9, and positioned jointly'within which and hence transverselyof the body, is
an attaching-pin 9 around which, within the channel of the body, may be secured said particularly as a union for so-called pulley clothes-lines and whereby the same maybe conveniently and dependably rendered duly taut, as found needful in practice,'but that the same may be modified to a -considera'ble extent, particularly as regards the specific character of the line-clamp madeuse of, the
specific form and methodiofproducing the body aforenamed, including: the 'material used in'the'production of said'bodyfand various minor details of the general :construction, without materially departing from the spirit and principle of my invention as coming within the scope ofthe claims hereto appended. I
I claimi" I I 1. line'or cable union comprising a body consisting only of' a base having suitable side-members rising therefrom at the ojpposite side-edges thereof, said side-members forming with said base 'an open fehannel for the reception of an end-portion or a lin'e or.
the like to be clamped, and being fitted with complementary slot-like openings ointly exl tending upwardly and rearwardly from the base aforenamed or points adjacent thereto; and a line clamp, the latter operating in the complementary openings aforenamed and being 'therebyrendered movable into and out of a lin'ekc lamping position within said channel and relatively to "said base, the deviceas'a whole being fitted at its rear end-portion with a suitable line-attaching medium, and aportion of the material of said base being struck or drawn downwardly forthe formation. integrally therewith and at a point along the basewell in adjvanceof v the line-attaching inediurn aforen'amed, of a a downwardly and forwardly curved leading- 0E guard.
2. A. line-0r cable'union-comprisinga body 1 consisting til-1y of a base having suitable side inernbers v rising therefrom at the" opp o forming with said base an open channel fo'r the reception of an end p'ortion of a lineor the like to be clamped, and"being fitted with complementary slot-like openings jointly ex- 2 e l p y J n eer wai' ly away from theba'se aforenamed orpointsadjacent thereto; and 'a' line clamp the latter operwithin said channel and relatively to said base, the device as a Whole being fitted with a line-attaching medium, consisting of a pin traversing transversely the channel aforenamed and piercing said opposite side-members at the rear end-portions thereof, and a portion of the material of said base being struck or drawn downwardly for the formation, integrally therewith and at a point along the base Well in advance of the lineattaching medium aforename'd, of a doWn- 10 wardly and forwardly curved leading-off guard, the side-members according pr0 ecting rearwardly Well beyond said guard.
