LOCI; PRO TE'GTOR.
eant.
To all whom it may concern: 4
Be it known that I, LEOPOLD SoHoNw'ALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at the borough of Manhattan, in the count of New York, city and State of New ork, have invented certain new and useful Im provenients in Lock Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
The improvements relate to looks, and particularly to locks of the cylinder type, and their objects are, among others, to protect such locks against being broken or opened otherwise than by a proper key.
Locks of this character are commonly con'iposed of a barrel or cylinder enclosing trimmers and having a cap or head. integral with the cylinder at the outer face of the door and provided with a suitable keyhole. This construction exposes the lock in such manner that it may be broken by the use of a pipe wrench or other tool, the intruder using the tool to engage the cap or head of the cylinder and drawing it out and twisting it in such a manner as to break the connection which prevents rotation of the lock and thus turning the lock and opening the door. The present improvements provide simple and eiiective means for preventing this.
The improvements are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical medial section of a lock protecting device with the parts of the lock enclosed therein indicated in full lines; Figure is a view of the front or face of the lock with the protection; Figure 3 is a detail oi the protecting cup in vertical medial section and an inside view thereof; Figure 4; shows similar views of the inside barrel and its flanges which are secured to the insideof the door; Figure 5 is an inside view and vertical section of the plate for securing the key disk, and Figure 6 is an edge and front View of the keyhole protecting disk.
The door is represented in vertical crosssection 1 (Fig. 1), and the cylinder containing the tumblers at 2. 3 is the lock spindle extending" to engage bolt-operating mechanism on the inner side of the door, and i is the face plate or cap of the cylinder preferably made integral with the cylinder, access to the tumblers. being provided through the removable plate 5 at the back: of the cylinder.
The barrel or sleeve 6 is secured to the inner face of the door by means. of the Specification of Letters Patent.

teriorly threaded, and receives the protecting cup 9, which is threaded interiorly,
these two parts being adjustable lengthwise to accommodate different thicknesses of doors. l'Vhen they have been adjusted to the thickness of the door a set screw 15 is passed through the opening in the part 9,. and an opening in. the part 8 made to align therewith and caused to press against the part 2 so as to hold all three parts securely in position. These set screws may be located on opposite sides, as shown.
The end 9 of the protecting cup or cap 9 is integral therewith, and this cap is made of hardened steel so that it cannot be broken by tools, and as it -closes the head and cylinder of the lock it will protect it securely.
In order to give access to the keyhole oi? the lock the end plate 9 is provided with an opening 10 which permits the key to be inserted t-hercthrough and rotated. In the prefer-red form however a rotating disk 11 is mounted. in this opening and is provided with a key slot 12 through which the key may be inserted. The disk 11 is rotatably mounted in the opening'hy means of its annular rib or flange 13 which is confined between the back of the end plate 9 adjacent to the opening and the grooved or stepped edge let of the plate 14, the said plate being provided with an opening corresponding with the opening 10. It is secured to the inner side of the end plate 9 by means of screws or other fastenings passed through its openings 14", which are in alignment with the openings 9( of the said end plate. Ifdesired, however, the disk 11 and inside plate 14 may be omitted and the cap of the cylinder placed against the inside of the plate 9"with the keyhole opposite the opening 10.
In order to make clear the objects and advantages of the improvements it should be explained that it is a comparatively easy matter for one who wishes to break a lock of this character to engage the face or cap of.
the cylinder 4. with a pair of heavy pliers, cutting away suthcient wood or other material of the door to give access thereto, and
then to draw the cylinder out of the sleeve or barrel 6, and to then break the threaded lugs 16 or the screws 17, by which the cyl nder is secured to the inner face of the door by applying a pipe wrench. or similar device to the cylinder and turning it. With the protecting device of the present improvements, however, this cannot be done since the parts of the lock are completely enclosed in the casing composed of the cap 9 and the barrel 6, united by their engaging threads and by the set screws and secured to the inner side oi? the door by means of the flange 7.
What I claim is: V
1. The combination with a cylinder lock comprising a lock spindle, a key and suitable trunblers, and a casing surrounding said tumblers and spindle adapted. to be mounted in a door, of a protecting casing comprising a sleeve member surrounding; the said casing adapted to be secured to the inner side of a door and extending into the door and a cap having its outer end at the outer side of the door, extemling;- inwardly therefrom and overlapping and secured to the sleeve member in the interior of the door, said cap substantially closing the protecting: casing.
The combination with a cylinder lock comprising: a lock spindle, a key and suitable tumblers, and a casing surrounding said tumblers and spindle adapted to be mounted in a door, of a protecting casing mmprising a sleeve member surrounding" said casing adapted to be secured to the inner side of a door and extending into the door and a cap having its outer end at the outer side oi the door extending inwardly therefrom and overlapping and secured to the sleeve member in the interior of the door, said cap substantially closing the protectingeasing and having an opening in its outer part to permit the insertion of the he 3. The combination with a cylinder lock comprising a lock spindle, a key and suit able tumblers, and a casing surrounding said tumblers and spindle adapted to be mounted in a door, of a protecting casing comprising a'sleeve member surrounding the said casing adapted to be secured to the inner side of a door and extending into the door and a, cap having its outer one at the outer side of the door, ext-ending inwardly therefrom and overlapping and secured to the sleeve member in the interior oi? the door, said cap substantially closing the protecting casing and having" an opening in its outer part to permit the insertion of the key, and a disk provided with a key slot rotatably mounted in said ope-nine".
4:. The combination with a cylinder lock comprising a lock spindle, a key and suitable tumblers, and a casing surrounding said tumblers and spindle adapted to be mounted in a door, of a protecting casing comprising a sleeve member surrounding the said casinn; adapted to be secured to the inner side of a door and extending into the door and a cap having its outer end at the outer side of the door, extending inwardly therefrom and overlapping and secured to the sleeve member in the interior of the door, said cap substantially closing the protecting casing and having an opening in its outer part to permit the insertion oi the key, a disk pro vided with a key slot rotatably mounted in said opening, and a plate secured to the inside of said cap and eontining a portion of said disk between itself and the outer partof: the
The combination with a cylinder lock comprising a. lock spindle, a lacy and suitable tumblers, and a casing surrounding said tumblers and spindle adapted. to be mounted in a door, of a protecting casing comprising a sleeve member surrounding the said casing adapted to be secured to the inner side of a. door and extending into the door and a cap having its outer end at the outer side of the door, extending inwardly therefrom and overlapping and secured to the sieeve mem her in the interior of the door, said cap sub stantiall y closing the protecting casing, the overlapping portions of the sa d members having engaging threads and aligned openings, and a securing member passed through and secured in said openings and pressing against the said first named casing.
In testimony whereof Ti aiiix my signature.
iinoronn SCHONWALD.
