Description

Security furniture for a key operated rim lock BACKGROUND
The invention relates to security furniture for a key operated rim lock. A key operated rim lock is typically provided with a cylinder for receiving the key. The cylinder comprises a cylindrical body known as the barrel, in which a cylindrical core or plug is fixedly placed during manufacture. The plug houses a keyway that is arranged to interact with the key. Traditionally, the externally facing side of the plug is exposed. Burglars can remove the plug from the barrel of the cylinder by inserting a screw into the keyway and subsequently levering the screw with a claw hammer or a dedicated plug puller tool with respect to the door furniture or the surface of the door itself. The levering of the screw causes the engaged plug to be pulled out of the barrel while the cylinder remains in place. Once the plug is removed, the burglar can easily access and turn the lock mechanism to unlock the door.
It is an object of the present invention to provide security furniture for a key operated rim lock which improves the security of the rim lock in view of plug pulling.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to a first aspect, the invention provides a security furniture for a key operated rim lock, comprising a rosette with a cavity for receiving a rim cylinder, wherein the rim cylinder is provided with a plug extending in and rotatable about an axial direction, wherein the rosette is provided with a key hole bounded by a key hole edge, wherein the key hole is arranged to be located opposite to an externally facing side of the plug in the axial direction, wherein at least a part of the cavity of the rosette between the key hole edge and the plug is formed as a cylindrical bore that is axially aligned with the plug in the axial direction, wherein the security furniture is provided with a circular cylinder protection plate that is arranged to be received in the cylindrical bore between the key hole edge and the plug to be rotatable together with the plug about the axial direction thereof, wherein the cylinder protection plate has an external diameter that is larger than the key hole edge and wherein the cylinder protection plate is provided with an opening that allows for insertion of a key into the plug, wherein the security furniture further comprises a spacing ring that is arranged to be placed between the key hole edge and the plug and to extend circumferentially around the cylinder protection plate at the axial position of the cylinder protection plate, wherein the spacing ring has a thickness in the axial direction that is sufficient to maintain a minimum spacing distance in the axial direction between the key hole edge and the plug to receive the cylinder protection plate with tolerance in the axial direction, wherein the spacing ring comprises a ring-like body that is arranged to extend concentric to the axial direction and that has a compressible external diameter, wherein the uncompressed external diameter is larger than the internal diameter of the cylindrical bore, wherein the spacing ring is arranged to be placed inside the cylindrical bore with a compressed external diameter.
The cylinder protection plate can prevent removal of the plug through the key hole in the axial direction of the plug. The minimum clearance and the associated tolerance in the axial direction reduces friction of the cylinder protection plate during rotation about the axial direction of the plug and may allow for uninhibited rotation of the cylinder protection plate together with or in unison with the plug during key operation of the rim lock .
In an embodiment the tolerance of the cylinder protection plate in the axial direction is provided between the cylinder protection plate and one or more of the group comprising the key hole edge, the spacing ring and the cylinder protection plate. Either tolerance can be sufficient to provide the aforementioned reduction in friction.
In an embodiment the spacing ring is arranged to be placed in abutment with the key hole edge, the plug or both. The abutment can a consistent tolerance and/or spacing distance. When in abutment with both the key hole edge and the plug, axial movement of the spacing ring can be prevent.
In an embodiment the cylinder protection plate has an external diameter, wherein the spacing ring has an internal diameter that, in a placed condition between the key hole edge and the plug, is larger than the external diameter of the cylinder protection plate. Thus, a tolerance can be provided between the spacing ring and the cylinder protection plate in a radial direction with respect to the axial direction, wherein said tolerance may reduce friction of the cylinder protection plate during rotation as a result of the key operation of the rim lock.
In an embodiment at least a part of the cavity of the rosette between the key hole edge and the plug is formed as a cylindrical bore that is axially aligned with the plug in the axial direction, wherein the cylinder protection plate and the spacing ring are arranged to be received in said cylindrical bore. The cylindrical bore may allow for a proper axial alignment of the spacing ring and the cylinder protection plate with respect to the plug.
In an embodiment the spacing ring comprises a ring-like body that is arranged to extend concentric to the axial direction and that has a compressible external diameter, wherein the uncompressed external diameter is larger than the internal diameter of the cylindrical bore, wherein the spacing ring is arranged to be placed inside the cylindrical bore with a compressed external diameter. In the compressed condition, the ring-like body can be biased to exert a radially external clamping force onto the cylindrical bore, thereby retaining the spacing ring in a fixed axial position inside the cylindrical bore.
In an embodiment the ring-like body is provided with a gap in its circumference to facilitate the compression. The ring-like body can be compressed within the space provided by the gap.
In an embodiment the cylinder protection plate has an external diameter, wherein the spacing ring is provided with a bounding edge that is arranged to extend radially inwards with respect to the axial direction into a position in the axial direction between the cylinder protection plate and the plug. The bounding edge can thus prevent that the cylinder protection plate moves axially into abutment with the plug. Thus cylinder protection plate can therefore be axially locked in between the spacing ring and the key hole edge.
In an embodiment the bounding edge extends circumferentially and defines a bounding diameter that is smaller than the external diameter of the cylinder protection plate. The bounding edge can thus circumferentially prevent axial movement of the cylinder protection plate towards the plug.
In an embodiment the security furniture further comprises a support plate which is arranged to be mated with the rosette with the rim cylinder axially locked in between support plate and the rosette. Thus, the rim cylinder can be axially locked within the security furniture .
In an embodiment the rim cylinder is comprised and pre-assembled in the security furniture. The rim cylinder can thus be provided as a part of the security furniture, thereby reducing the steps for assembling and mounting of the security furniture. Alternatively, the rim cylinder is provided separately to allow for custom rim cylinders to be fitted.
According to a second aspect, the invention provides a method for assembling the security furniture according to claim 1, comprising the steps of placing the cylinder protection plate in the cavity between the key hole edge and the plug, placing the spacing ring in the cavity between the key hole edge and the plug at the axial position of and circumferentially around the cylinder protection plate, inserting the rim cylinder into the cavity with its plug in axial alignment with and opposite to the key hole, the cylinder protection plate and the spacing ring, wherein the spacing ring maintains a minimum spacing distance in the axial direction between the key hole edge and the plug to receive the cylinder protection plate with tolerance in the axial direction.
Again, the cylinder protection plate can prevent removal of the plug through the key hole in the axial direction of the plug. The minimum clearance and the associated tolerance in the axial direction reduces friction of the cylinder protection plate during rotation about the axial direction of the plug and may allow for uninhibited rotation of the cylinder protection plate together with or in unison with the plug during key operation of the rim lock.
The various aspects and features described and shown in the specification can be applied, individually, wherever possible. These individual aspects, in particular the aspects and features described in the attached dependent claims, can be made subject of divisional patent applications .

The inside 92 is provided with a cut-out 93 and a through hole 94 for receiving a rim cylinder 2. The rim lock mechanism, typically placed on the inside 92 of the door 9, is engaged by the rim-cylinder 2 through the through hole 94. A back plate 5 is provided to engage the security furniture 1 from the inside 92 through the body 90 of the door 9. When engaged, the security furniture 1 and the rim cylinder 2 are securely mounted to the door 9.
As shown in figure 1, the security furniture 1 comprises an external or front member in the form of a fitting or a rosette 10. The rosette 10 is provided with a key hole 11 bounded by a key hole edge 19 for receiving a key (not shown) in or parallel to an axial direction A of the rim cylinder 2. The security furniture 1 is further provided with a support plate 12 that is arranged to be mated with the rosette 10 at the side of the rosette 10 that faces the outside 91 of the door 9. The support plate 12 is provided with a bushing 13 for receiving the rim cylinder 2 in a direction parallel to the axial direction A. The bushing 13 ends in a circumferential retaining edge 14 that faces the rosette 10. The rosette 10 comprises an internal cavity 15 that is open towards the support plate 12 and the outside 91 of the door 9 and that is at least partly formed as or narrows into a narrow cylindrical chamber or bore 16 towards the key hole edge 19 and in alignment with the axial direction A at the key hole 11. The internal diameter of the cylindrical bore 16 is smaller than the internal diameter of the key hole 11, such that the key hole edge 19 overlaps or forms or rim around the key hole 11 with respect to the cylindrical bore 16.
Around the cavity 15 and facing towards the support plate 12, the rosette 10 is provided with mounting holes 17. The support plate 12 is provided with respective recesses 18 which are axially aligned with the mounting holes 17.
As best seen in the cross section of figure 4, the rim cylinder 2, known per se, comprises a cylindrical body or barrel 20 that is provided with a front face 21. At the front face 21 the rim cylinder 2 is provided with a circumferential flange 22. The rim cylinder 2 comprises a cylindrical core or plug 23 that extends in the axial direction A and that is fixedly placed in the barrel 20 during manufacture. The plug 23 houses a keyway (not shown) that is arranged to interact with the key. The rim cylinder 2 is further provided with a tailpiece 24 that - with the right key interacting with the key way - can be rotated to operate the rim lock mechanism in a manner known per se. The tailpiece 24 can be shortened by breaking it at the required length.
As shown in figures 1-4, the rim cylinder 2 is arranged to be received in the bushing 13 of the support plate 12 from the side of the support plate 12 facing away from the door 9 into a position in which the circumferential flange 22 of the rim cylinder 2 is in abutment with the circumferential retaining edge 14 of the support plate 12. The rosette 10 is arranged to be placed over the support plate 12 such that the bushing 13 and the rim cylinder 2 retained therein are at least partially received inside the internal cavity 15 of the rosette 10. In particular, the circumferential flange 22 of the rim cylinder 2 is axially locked between the circumferential retaining edge 14 of the support plate 12 and the body of the rosette 10 surrounding the internal cavity 15. In said locked position, the front face 21 of the rim cylinder 2 is directly opposite to the key hole 11 in the rosette 10. More in particular, the front face 21 at the plug 23 is directly opposite, in the axial direction A, to the key hole 11 so that the key may be inserted axially through the key hole 11 into the keyway of the plug 23.
The rim cylinder 2 can either be provided as part of a pre-assembled security furniture 1, in which case the rim cylinder 2 is placed in the rosette 10. Optionally, the rim cylinder 2 is provided separately, allowing for custom rim cylinders 2 to be fitted.
Traditionally, the front face 21 of the rim cylinder 2 at the plug 23 is exposed to the surroundings via the key hole 11. To prevent plug pulling of the plug 23 through the key hole 11, the security furniture 1 is provided with a circular cylinder cover plate or cylinder protection plate 3 that is placed in the internal cavity 15 of the rosette 10 between the key hole 11 and the plug 23 prior to receiving the rim cylinder 2 in the cavity 15 of the rosette 10. The cylinder protection plate 3 comprises a substantially circular surface area 30 that covers a substantial part of the externally facing side of the plug 23 in the axial direction A. The cylinder protection plate 3 further comprises a minimal or limited opening, in this exemplary embodiment in the form of a slit 31, in the surface area 30 that only minimally exposing an area of the plug 23 complimentary to the form of the key, in particular the area of the plug 23 that receives the key into the keyway. The cylinder protection plate 3 is provided with a circumferential edge 32 with a height or thickness T1 in the axial direction A and an external diameter D1 that is slightly larger than the internal dimension or diameter of the key hole edge 19. The circumferential edge 32 is recessed with respect to the surface area 30 of the cylinder protection plate 3, such that said surface area 30 can be received within the key hole edge 19 to lie flush or substantially flush with the external face of the rosette 10.
As shown in figures 1-4, and more in detail in figures 5A and 5B, the security furniture 1 is further provided with a spacing ring 4 that is arranged to circumferentially enclose, encircle or surround the cylinder protection plate 3 or to be placed on the radial outside of the cylinder protection plate 3. The spacing ring 4 comprises an annular or ring-like body 40 that is arranged to extend concentric to the axial direction A. The ring-like body 40 is provided with a single gap 41 in its circumference. The spacing ring 4 is provided with a circumferential clamping wall 42 at the radial outside of the ring-like body 40 and an bounding edge 43 minimally projecting in a radially inward direction. The circumferential clamping wall 42 has a height or thickness T2 that exceeds the thickness of the circumferential edge 32 of the cylinder protection plate 3 in the axial direction A. The spacing ring 4 spans or defines a clearance volume V for receiving the cylinder protection plate 3. In particular, the spacing ring 4 maintains a minimum spacing distance X in a direction parallel to the axial direction A that is greater than or exceeds the thickness T1 of the circumferential edge 32 of the cylinder protection plate 3 in the axial direction A. The radial outside of the circumferential clamping wall 42 defines an external diameter D2, while the radial inside of the circumferential clamping wall 42 defines an internal diameter D3. The radial inside of the bounding edge 43 defines an bounding diameter D4 of the ring-like body 40, which bounds the clearance volume V in the axial direction A.
The unstressed, relaxed or uncompressed external diameter D2 of the circumferential clamping wall 42 is slightly larger than the internal dimension or diameter of the cavity 15 in the rosette 10 at the axial position of the ring-like body 40. The ring-like body 40 can be compressed to a smaller compressed external diameter D2 within the space provided by the gap 41 by applying pressure on the external diameter D2. As shown in figures 3 and 4, the spacing ring 4 is arranged to be inserted in the cavity 15 of the rosette 10 at the axial position of the cylinder protection plate 3. The spacing ring 4 is compressed to fit into the narrow cylindrical bore 16 in the cavity 15, and subsequently allowed to relax into clamping abutment with a radially outward directed clamping force. As such, the spacing ring 4 is clamped into an axial position surrounding or extending circumferentially around the cylinder protection plate 3, wherein the spacing ring 4, in abutment with both the inside of the rosette 10 at the key hole edge 19 and the front face 21 of the rim cylinder 2 surrounding the plug 23, maintains a clearance volume V that allows for the cylinder protection plate 3 to be movable, within the tolerances provided by the clearance volume V in the axial direction A and in a rotation R about the axial direction A.
With the cylinder protection plate 3 and the spacing ring 4 mounted between the key hole 11 and the plug 23, the cylinder protection plate 3 is arranged to receive the key through the key slit 31. Initially, the key slit 31 is arranged to extend in a home orientation, typically vertical or substantially vertical, in which the key slit 31 is aligned with the home orientation of the keyway in the plug 23. As such, the key can directly be inserted into and interact with the keyway. With the correct key, the plug 23 can be rotated, in which case the cylinder protection plate 3 is rotated together or in unison with the key in rotation R to facilitate the turning of the plug 23 and the subsequent unlocking of the rim lock mechanism via the operation of the tailpiece 24.
In figure 6, an exemplary embodiment of the back plate 5, known per se, is shown. The back plate 5 comprises a plate-like body 50 with a plurality of mounting holes which are axially aligned with the mounting holes 17 in the rosette 10. A number of fasteners 51, 52 is provided to engage with and to couple the back plate 5 to the rosette 10 with the door 9 in between. In the mounted condition, the security furniture 1 and the back plate 5 cooperate to tightly engage the door 9 and to provide sufficient contact area with the outside 91 and inside 92, respectively, of the door 9 to withstand and distribute extreme forces (in excess of fifteen kilo newton (kN) ) in the event of an attempt to remove the plug 23.
It is to be understood that the above description is included to illustrate the operation of the preferred embodiments and is not meant to limit the scope of the invention. From the above discussion, many variations will be apparent to one skilled in the art that would yet be encompassed by the spirit and scope of the present invention.
