G. F. A. OCHS.
-ANCHORING MEANS FOR TRACK RAILS.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 2,192].
Patented Feb. 28, 1922.
UNITED SI -E NT F GE ORGE r. A. cons, or NEWARK, NEW JnRsEYQ T 0 (all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. A. Gone, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Anchoring Means for Track Rails, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide an anchoring means including a block and spike for securing railroad track rails to ties of the type referred to in my former Patent No. 1,344,926 granted June 29, 1920 wherein, as a substitute for the wood or timber ties now commonly used the construction embodies marginal upper and lower facing plates with an interposed filler of laminated paper or similar fibrous material treated with creosote or other preservative, suitably compressed to form a material adapted for engagement by spikes and like fastening means; and more particularly the object in view is to provide an anchor block having means for splitting or spreading the end of the spike for securing an effective engagement with the filler or other material of the tie, while removal of the block from the tie,
for the purpose of making repairs or re placements, is facilitated; and with these objects in view the invention consists in a con struction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the ac companying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a View of an anchor block and spike constructed and arranged in accordance with the invention applied in the operative position to a tie of the type indicated.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. i I
Figure 3 is a detail in perspective of the block.
Figure 4 is a simi ar view of the spike.
Figure 5 is a detail view of a modified form of block.
The block 10 which is embedded in the tie l1 and is provided at its outer end with a shoulder or offset forming a seat 12 to extend under the edge of the metallic cover or marginal plate 13 of the tie, said tie as in the construction disclosed in my former patent above-noted having the upper and lower marginal or binder plates 13 and 14: between which is interposed a laminated filler 15, a bolt 16 being extended downward through the upper marginal plate 1.3 and into a socket Anoiionnve MEANS ron franc]: Rains,

17 in the block at the said shoulder 12. The inner end of the block is provided with an extension 18 shouldered as at 19 and extending under the foot of the rail 20, the end of the extension having a reduced lip 21 under which a tool such as a crow bar or the like may be inserted to lift the block out of the tie.
The block is provided with a spike seat 22 communicating with a cross channel 23 hav- 111 a splitting web or wedge 24: for splitting or separating the terminals 25 of the spike 26 to cause the deflection of the extremities .thereof as shown in Figure 2 to insure an interlocking engagement of the spike with the block.
It will be understood that whereas the rounded body portion of the block, which approximates the cross sectionally semi-circular form as indicated in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive is in some respects preferable and has advantages in the facility with which it may be applied to the tie, a rectangular form of block such as that in the modification shown in Figure 5 may be substituted for the same with advantage and as also shown in Figure 5 a plurality of spike seats 27 may be formed therein communicating with cross channels 28 having as in the previously described form the intermediate webs 29 for splitting the inner ends of the spikes. The modified construction shown-in Figure 5 contemplates a single block constituting a hearing or seat for the rail between the sets of spike seats, instead of duplicate or twin blocks as required in the form illustrated in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. An anchoring device for attaching a I spike splitting wedge at the lower end thereof, the block being provided at its outer end with an overhanging lip for engagement by a block removing tool. I
3. The combination with a tie, of an anchoring block of cross sectionally semi-cirwhich a tool may be engaged to lift the block cular form embedded in the tie and provided out of the tie, the circular contour of the with a spike channel having a spike spiitblock permitting sliding movement of the 10 ting edge at the lower end thereof, the block same in the seat in the tie during the lifting 5 being provided with an extension for disoperation of the block.
position under a rail seated on the tie and In testimony whereof I affix my signature. the extension having a reduced lip under GEORGE F. A. OCHS.
