UNITED STATES HARRY W. FAHRLANDER, OF HAMILTON,
WOOD & GAMBLE COMPANY, OF CINOI OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE HOUSTON STAN- NNATI, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
DETACHABLE SUPPORT FOR HORIZONTAL SHAITS OF MACHINES.
. Specification 0 fLett r P t n Patented Feb 28, 1922.
Application filed January 13, 1921. Serial-No. 436,929.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that. HARRY W. FAHnLnN- DER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamilton. in. the county of Butler and State of Ohio, has invented new and useful Improvements in Detachable Supports for Horizontal Shafts otMachines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to detachable sup ports for such horizontal shafts of machines as need support to ensure smooth operation or to avoid'undue strain or wear.
The device is readily placed in position for use, readjusted during use, or detached and laid aside when not needed. It may be made to support one or more such horizontal members.
The particular embodiment of my invention selected for illustration is a support for both the lead screw and controller rod of a lathe.
Figure 1 is a perspective of the detachable support, on the lathe bed, in work position, supporting both the lead-screw and controller-rod; I
Fig. 2 is the same in released position, and
Fig. 3 is a longitudinalsection through the device when in work position.
Referring now to the drawings, upon the front way of the bed A of a lathe rests the top member B of the support. This top member is formed with a hook Z) on the back end to hold itin'position on the bed.
A link C is pivoted by the pivot 0 to the front end of the top member B, and by the pivot c to the top end of an intermediate member D, and has a handle 0 by which the position of the link may be changed so as to lower the intermediate member and a lower member E to the position shown in Fig. 2 or raise them to the position shown in Figs. 1 and The pivot 0 is carried back of the pivot 6 beyond the center of gravity when the support is in work position (shown in Figs. 1 and 3) so that the device will not be subject to accidental release.
The intermediate member 1) has a handle (Z for convenience in adjusting the device while it is supported on the lathe bed and in removing it from the lathe. It also has a stop al shown in the drawing as a removable.
pin. With this stop the lathe carriagemay contact without injury to weaker projecting members of the carriage. Pressure of the carriage on this stop will cause the supportmg dev ce to move along with the carria e until such time as it is removed and set in position on the other side of the carriage.
To the back of the intermediate member is secured in any convenient manner as by the cap-screw 6?, a block 03 with a groove d, in which the lead screw F rests when the device is in raised or work position. To the block (Z is pivoted. the lower member E by the pivot e.
The lower member E has a groove e in which the controller rod G rests when the device is in work position.
From the description and drawings, it will be apparent how quickly and easily the device may be placed upon or removed from the lathe, and thrown in or out of work posit1on; and no further description of the operation is necessary.
Obviously if the lathe has no controller rod, the element E will be omitted.
I claim as my invention and desire to secureby Letters Patent of the United States:
1. A detachable support for substantially horizontal shafts of machine tools, having in combination a member adapted to rest upon the machine bed and carry the weight of the support and its load, means for supporting said shafts, and a link connecting the weight carrying member and the shaft member in such manner that by of the position of the link the latter Wlll raise the supporting member to work position or lower it to idle position.
2. A detachable support for the horizontal shafts of lathes, consisting of the combination of a member adapted to rest upon the ways of a lathe bed and carry the weight of'the support and its load, one or more members for supporting said shafts, a link pivoted to both the weight carrying and the supporting members, and means whereby the position of the link may be changed to raise the supporting member into. posi-, tlon to support said shafts or lower it mto;
position'to release them.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing supporting the chan e
