Description

R.. H. BREMER.
REFRlGERAToR.
WITNESS:
mvENToR ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
. y RUSSELL E. BREMER, or READING, PENNSYLVANIA, AssIGnoR or oNE-'rI-I'IRD To GEORGE H. RICE, or ARLINGTON, VERMONT.
Y REFRIGERATOR.
To 'alla/hom t may concern:
Be it known that L RUSSELL H. BREMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county ot Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Reii'rigerators o which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to refrigerators and has for an obj ect the provision ozt means for holding ice in a mannerto protect the same from direct contact with air and to so locate and arrange the icecompartment as to insure proper distribution ot cold air to the contents of the food chamber of the refrigerator.
Another object of the invention is the provision of novel air circulating means, wherein air is admitted to the refrigerator to be acted upon and cooled by the ice without contact with the latter and directed into the 'food chamber and thus provide a. maximum cooling elect with a minimum amount of ice.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction. to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrateda in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a refrigerator constructed in accordance with the invention, the view being partly broken away and shown in section to more-clearly illustrate the invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
Referring in detail to the drawings.V wherein like characters of reference denote correspending parts. the refrigerator is shown as including I suitable construction and which if desired, may be formed of suitable insulating walls, as is common in devices of this character.
Located within the casing is a partition which includes a vertical wall 11 and a horizontal wall 12, the first mentioned wall being spaced from the rear wall of the refrigerator casing and the last mentioned wall lspaced from the bottom wall of said casing and extending forwardly from the bottom of the rear wall 11 and providing a food compartment 13. Access to the food compartment 13 is had through the medium a casing 10. which may be of any Specification of Letters Patent. Igtgnted Feb, 28:, 1922, i Application filed. December 7, 1921. Serial No. 520,645.
of bores 111. which are shown vas located yin the front wall of the casing 10.
Located within the refrigerator casing be* tween the rear and bottom walls of the latter' and the partition walls 11 and 12, is an ice compartment 15. This compartment is substantially L-sliaped and is Jformed of spaced walls 16 and 17 which are spaced from the casing and partition walls, the space between the partition walls and the walls 17 defining an air passage 18. The ice compartment 15 is open at its top and is adapted to be closed by a suitable cover or closure 19.
The air passage 18 is in communication with the atmosphere through the medium of restricted openings 20, while the partition walls 11 and 12 are provided with openings 21 to establish communication between the air passage 18 and the interior ot the food compartment 18.
In the use of the refrigerator, the compartment 15 is filled with ice and the cover or closure 19 positioned to close its upper end. Air entering through the openings 2O will circulate through the air passage 18 against the walls 17 of the ice compartment and will be converted into a frost, so that cold air will enter and circulate through the openings 21 into the food chamber 13. The
` circulation of air is thus established through the refrigerator, to be acted upon by the ice without coming in contact with the latter, so that the said ice will last for a relaively long period.
A drain pipe 22 extends downward from the ice compartment 15 and may lead to a sewer or drain. This pipe is provided. with a valve 23. which is controlled by an oper ating lever or handle 24 having connection with the valve by .means ot a rod 25. Excess accumulation of water within the ice compartment 15 may thus be prevented.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form. proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appendedl claims.
Having Vdescribed the invention what is claimed is 1. A refrigerator embodying a casing, a partition. spaced from the walls of the casing and having openings therein and providing a food chamber, an ice compartment located between and spaced rom the walls of the' food chamber and casing and providing an air circulating passage between said food chamber and ice compartment, said ice Co1npart-ment havinga filling opening therein,
a closure for the lopening and means whereby' v au' may he admitted to the air passage.
2. A refrigerator embodying a easing, a partition spaced from the Walls of the casing v and having openings therein and providing a food chamber, a substantially L-shapedice eompaitment open at the top and extending along the rear `and bottom of the casing be-
