Be it known that 1, Gross]: D. f r a citiaen of the United States, residin at: New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented. certain new'and useful Improvements in Bottle Cappers, of which the following is a full, clean-and exact specifieation.
This invention relates to bottle capping devices, and has for its object to provide a simple form of hand operated appliance for this purpose which may be easily operated and will perform its work with certainty and precision. n

Acavity 15, Figure 3, is formed in the under face of the plunger let to fit over a bottle cap, one of which is indicated at 33 in the same figure, the vertical peripheral walls of said cavity serving to force the rim of the cap into engagement with the bead 32 of the mouth of the bottle neck 30 when said plunger is fully depressed. In order to insure the proper seating of the cap well down upon the mouth of the bottle before the rim of said cap is contracted around the bead 32,

A notch 28 is preferably formed in said stem 24'adapted to co-operate with the pivot pin 18, which connects the links 17 to said lug 16, for limiting the movement of said auxiliary plunger with respect to the main plunger 14. The upper end of the stem 24 is adapted to be engaged by a cam portion 23 on the pivbe observed that the bottle neck grip-ping notches 12 in the jaws 9 have beveled edges 13 to better grip the bottle neck below the mouth, as shown in Figure 3. In the operation of the device, after the bottle neck has been engaged with the jaws 9, the lever is moved on its pivot from vertical to horizontal position, thereby depressing the plunger 14 to crimp the flange of the cap 33 around the bead 32 at the mouth of the bottle. As said plunger 14 is depressedby means of the links 17 connecting the same to the lever 20 eccentricallyof the pivot 21 of said lever, the cam 23 of the lever engages the stem 24 and advances the auxiliary plunger 27 so as to hold the cap firmly in place over the mouth of the bottle during the final descent of the plunger 14 for crimping the flange of said cap;
I claimu- 1. In a bottle capper, the combination with a bracket having an opening therethrough,
of oppositely extending jaws for gripping a bottle neck to support the same, said jaws being hinged to swing upwardly and away from the bracket to release a bottle neck and to fold down flat upon said bracket to engage a bottle neck, another bracket arranged above the first one, rods extending from one bracket to the other and arranged between the hinges of the bottle gripping aws, itl'earthe rods, and a plunger mounted to slide on said rods for capping a bottle when supported by said jaws.
2. In a bottle capper, the combination with a plunger having a cavity to fi-t over a cap for crimping the same upon a bottle, of means for reciprocating said plunger including a lever and links connected to said lever and plunger, an auxiliary plunger arranged in the cavity of the first plunger and having a stem extending up through the same, and a cam on said lever for engaging said stem and moving the auxiliary plunger into engagement with the cap in advance of the main plunger and for holding said auxiliary plunger in contact with said cap for retaining the latter in place on the bottle, while the main plunger is advanced to crimp the cap on the bottle;
3. In a bottle capper, the combination with a plunger having a cavity to fit over a cap, of a lever connected to said plunger by links and a pivot pin extending throng the plunger, an auxiliary plunger arranged in the cavity of the firstplunger for the purpose specified, a; stem extending up through a passage in the first plunger for actuating the auxiliary plunger independently to a certain extent, said pivot pin extending into said passage, and means on said stem to engage said pin for limiting the independent movement of said auxiliary plunger.
