Leonesa.
. To all whom if may concern:
Be it known that I, -VBLLIAM KLOCKE, e. citizen of the United States of America, residing in 'New York city, in the county of Queens and State o hcw York, have invented certain new andgiseful Improvements in Safety Devices for Slideperating Mechanism in Presses, of which the following is asspecication. Y
This invention relates to drawing presses, and aims to provide improvements therein.`
The invention provides a safety connection between the blankholder or die-carrying slide and the driving part, whereby the specially formed and indre dihcultl replaceable parts of the blankfholder sli e operating mechanism will not be broken orstrained when said slide `liner-its with an unusual resistance, such as that arising from an extraneous object being left between the blankholder anddie.
IThe invention further provides a novel combination, hereinater set forth and defined, for the purpose of safeguarding the ,blank-hoider slide .operating mechanism and other parts of the press from injury due to said parts meeting with an extraordinary resistance. f v An embodiment: `oli the invention is illustrated inthe accompanying drawing, where- Figure l is a view in side elevation of so necessary to illustrate'the invention;` Y
Figure 2 isa view in end elevation of the parts shown in Figure 1, with parts shown in section, and with parts broken away;
The invention is shown as embodiedin a well-known type of press, the press shown being disclosed' in the Klocke Patent No. 955,173, dated April 19,1910.
1n said drawings, numeral 10 designated a reciprooatory slide adapted to carry a blankholder or die, 11 the bed of the press, adapted to carry the complemental part tdi-hat which is carried upon the'slide l0, and 12 designates a punch slide, here shown as working through the blank-holder slide; 1.4 designates the side piece ,of the press frame. The punch slide `is .conveniently actuated by a 'crank shaft 16; the blank-holder slide is also preterabl actuatedfirom an eccentric part 18 on sai crank shaft, through suitable drivingconnections. The eccentric part 18 is conveniently a 'crank pin on a gear 19,

The blank-holder slide driving connections preferably comprise a slide 20,l which slide'is conveniently arranged to Work on a suitable slideway or gibs 22, formed on the outer side of the side .piece 14 of the press frame. Any suitable connections between the slide 20 and the blank-holder slide l0 may be provided. A suitable and convenient means comprise an extension 22 on the slide connected, through `a crank 24, by a link 25, with is connected with the slide 10 through one or more toggles 28. The rock shafts 27 and associatedparts, or their equivalents, are preferably provided on two sides of a midplane of the press in order to provide a symmetrical application to the slide 10.
The resilient means 35 are conveniently in the Jforni of a bolt 40, having an eye or knuckle head Ll2,vvhich bolt passes through a socket piece 414i formed upon the slide 20. A coiled spring 46 is arranged between a collar 47 on the bolt 40 and a part ofthe slide, as, for exam le, the under side of the socket piece d4. he collar 47 'may be so fastened on the bolt by means of nuts 49 on the lower screw threaded end of the said t bolt. The tension of the said spring is preferably such that it does not yield under the ordinary pressures of the blank-holder upon the work, but .will yield under an extraordinary resistance, such as that caused by yan extraneous object between the working parts of the press.
Any suitable connections may be provided between the slide 20 and its driving part. Preferably this means comprise a link 55 connected at one end tothe eccentric part of the driving forceV a crank shaft 27, which crank shaft 18, and connected at its other end to the knuckle or eye head 42 on the bolt, by means of a pin 57.
In the case of wide presses and heavyduty presses, the slide 20 and connections are preferably duplicated at the two sides ofthe press.
The inventive ideas may receive other embodiments than those herein specifically illustrated and described.
