To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST PAYNE, a c1t1- zen of the United States, residing at Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pivoted Headlights for Locomotives, of which the followlng is a specification.
My invention relates to pivoted headlights for locomotives. The light is automatically operated by the movement of the forward truck, so that the light will always point in the direction in which the locomotive is moving, whether rounding a curve or traveling straight ahead and it has for its object to provide a pivoted headlight mechanism which can be attached to differently positioned head lights. and which at the same time can be cheaply manufactured and assembled. With these objects in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly described and pointed out in the claim; reference being had to the accompanying drawings. in which:

In carrying out my invention, I provide a gear frame A, which may be mountedin any convenient manner in the cross beam C, of the locomotive truck. Mounted on the inner side of the front end of frame A, I have the mesh or cogs d, adapted to receive a gear. Vertically and pivotally mounted in any convenient manner on the forward platform D, of the locomotive, I have the sectional vertical shaft E, and on the lower end of which I have mounted the gear 2, so, positioned to operate inthe cogs d; the sectional vertical shaft E is made up of sec- Specification of Letters Patent.

I have mounted the gear 2; this section is have the crank 9,- pivotally engaging the lug 10, mounted on and projecting from the headlight box F; the headlight box F being pivotally mounted on the locomotive body, by means of the pivot 11. In another form of my device, I have the brace G mounted on the front of the locomotive body and projecting the upper and lower parallel extending lugs 12, 12; the upper end of shaft E being pivotally mounted in said lugs, and mounted on said shaft, in any convenient manner and between the lugs 12, 12 I have the head light box F.
In the operation of my device, the frame A, is moved to the right or left or straight ahead by the curvature of the track and the consequent turning of the truck beam C to the right or to the left, and it thus causes the gear 2 to turn, which causes the shaft E to turn and through the movement of the lever, turns the headlight box F to the right directly upon shaft E as shown in Fig.2 or whether it is connected by a lever movement. When it is desired to open the ash or to the left, whether the box F is mounted door of the furnace or for any other reason to remove the shaft E, I loosen the set screws mounted in the sleeves 7, 7 and then move the sleeves along said shaft until the central section 4: can be removed from the slots and thus leaving an open space in front of the boiler head. To place the shaft in use, I replace the central section 4, adjust the sleeves 7 7 and clamp the sleeves in any desired position, by means of the set screws 8, 8 and the device is ready for operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and for which I desire Letters Patent is as follows:
In combination with a locomotive and the forward truck thereofa guide frame projecting longitudinally forward from the truck beam, a series of cogs mounted on the inner face of the front end of said frame, a gear meshing into said cogs, a verticalshaft pivotallymounted in the head platform of the locomotive and supporting said gear meshing into said cogs, a remo able seotion to said shaft, means for clamping and unclamping said section in position, a head- 10 light box pivotally mounted on the locomotive body, pivoted lever connection between said shaft and the headlight box.
