1 Lock.
To-all'whom it may concern:
Be it knowntha't I, WILLIAM D. KENNEDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairfieldyin thecounty of Greene and- State of -Ohio,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which'the following is a specification.
This invention relates 'tolo'c'king devices 'and -i'sa'd'a ted 'primarilyfor usein connection with lgo'rd cars for locking the lid over the rear compartment of a Ford roa-dster, the prime feature of the invention being the provision of a locking construction for securing the edge of the lid tothe edge of the hood forming the compartment at two or more points in addition to "providing a lock for engagement with the locking device for holding it against casual operation.
A further feature of the invention is the provision of a locking bar for engagement with the boltof a lock, said locking bar being so constructed as to resist downward pressure on the lid covering the opening in the compartment of the car.
A further feature of the invention is in so constructing the locking bar and the parts connecting the edge of the lid with the parts of the hood that the operation of all of said parts will be in unison.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter more fully set forth and pointed out in the accompanying specification.
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the rear portion of a Ford roadster-showing the look ing device applied thereto, parts being shown in dotted lines,
Figure 2 is a sectional view as seen on line 2-2 Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a sectional view as seen on line 3-3 Figure 2 on an enlarged scale, and
Figure 4 is a sectional view as seen on line 44 Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the frame of an automobile, in this instance of the Ford type, upon the rear portion of which is formed a hood 2, said hood forming a compartment 3 for the storage of different articles, the top portion of the hood 2 having a lid or door 4 secured thereto by means of a hinge 5.
The opening 6 through the top portion of V Specificationof Letters l atent,

the hood 2 is'preferably constructed with an upstanding flange: 7 around'j it s edges while the lid 4 is'l,ikewis'eprovided a depend mg flange 8 which fits ov'e'rthe flange '7 when the'lid is closed. e t
In order to secure the lidjin "closed "position twoor more la'tch'es9 aire fixedto the lower ends "of handles" 1 0,sa'id handles extending' through the lid 4*adjaccntfone edge and-so V positioned that shorter end of the -latches, when in lockii'igfp'osithin, will project beneath the edgesiof'the -hoo' d'2, thereby damp ng the harne position} a I As shown in igure 1,"t'wo' handlesjloarfi provided," one; "adjacent each I lateral edge "of the lid, and consequentlytwo of the latches 9 are provided, and to the elongated ends of said latches is pivoted a locking bar 11,
which bar is preferably angular shape in cross section, the horizontal part of the bar 11 being pivoted to the ends of the latches 9 while the vertical portion thereof is provided with a slot 12 for the reception of a bolt 13 of a lock 14, the lock 14 being fixed to the under face of the, lid 4 in any suitable manner. By forming the locking: bar substantially angular shape and positioning the slot 12 so that a solid portion of the bar will extend over the bolt 13 it will be impossible to spring the lid sufiiciently to disconnect the locking ends of the: latches 9 from beneath the edge of the hood 2.
When the lid 4 is to be raised, the lock 14 is operated and the bolt turned out of the slot 12 when b directing lateral pressure against one or both of the handles 10, the latches 9 will be swung in the arc of a circle and the locking ends thereof moved out of the path of the edge of the hood 2, consequently the lid will be free to swing upwardly, and as the locking bar'll is pivoted to the outer ends of the latches 9 the operation of one of the handles 10 will operate the other handle as all of these parts move in unison, consequently the locking bar will, be moved away from the edge of the lock 14. In locking the lid in closed position the handles 10 are operated to'again move the locking ends of the latches 9 beneath the edge of the hood 2 and this action moves the locking bar 11 in juxtaposition to the lock I is so positioned it will be impossible to turn the handles 10, consequently the lid will be securely held in locked position.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. Means for looking a cover in position .over an openingthrough a compartment forming wall, comprising latch structures having parts thereof positioned to swing below the edge of the compartment forming wall, manuallyoperated means connected with the lid for swinging saidlatches, a locking bar pivoted to said latches and movable therewith, and a locking bolt adapted v to engage said locking bar when thejlatches a slot therethrough, a lock attached to the i swlnging movement.
lid, and a bolt carried by the lock adapted to be entered through said slot for holding the locking bar and latches in fixed position.
3. The combination with a compartment forming hood having an opening therethrough and a hinged lid for closing said opening, of a pair of latches, a pair of handles carrying said latches and extending through said lid,one end of the latches interlocking with the edge of the hood, a looking bar pivoted to the opposite ends of said latches, said bar being substantially angular shaped in cross section and having a slot between its ends, a lock connected to said lid, and a bolt in said lock adapted to be entered through the slot in the locking bar for holding said bar and latches against In witness whereof, I have hereunto set this 18th day of October, A. D. nineteen hundred and twent r WILLIAli I l). KENNEDY. [1,. s.] Witnesses: a I H i C'AREY S. Fem, M L. SHULER.
