PIPE WRENCH.
Specication of Letters lhatent.
Patented Feb. 28, 1,922.
Be it known that I, WALTER L. Booxovnn,
a .citizen of the United States, residing at Tipton, in the county of Tipton and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful- Pipe Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tools, and more particularly to adjustable pipe 'wrenches, the primary object of the invention is to provide a wrench which will 'be automatically adjusted to grip an article, when pressure -is brought to bear on the handle thereof. Another objectof the invention is to provide a wrench wherein the jaws will be forced into closer gripping relation with the article under operation as the pressure .e on the handle portion of the tool is increased.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in -the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a wrench constructed in accordance with they present invention, a portion of the handle eing broken away to illustrate the connection between the inner 'aw and handle.
Figure 2 is a fragmental. rear elevational view of the wrench.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference-character 5 designates the handle portion of the wrench which has one end thereof bifurcated to provide spaced arms 6, the outer ends thereof being offset as at 7 for purposes to be hereinafter more fully described.
The spaced arms 6 provide a support forv the inner jaw 8 which is positioned lbetween the arms ina manner to restrict lateral. movement of the jaw with respect to the handle, but permit of pivotal movement of the jaw.
This jaw 8 is provided with an elongated opening 9 'designed to accommodate the pin 10, which extends through suitable openings provided in the arms 6 and provides the pivot'for the inner jaw 8. The outer jaw,
which is indicated 'at 11 embodies spaced u arms 12 which tioned between t e offset-portion 7, of the arm 6, where -the same have pivotal connectionwith the varm 6, as by means of the pivot pm 13.
The jaw 8 is also pivotally supported between thel arms 12 of the jaw 11, as by means vof the pivot pin 1 4, so that as pressure is brought to bear on the handle 5 of the wrench', the jaw 8 may pivot or move to automatically adjust itself into gripping relation with the 4article `under operation, which in the present drawing is in the form of a pipe indicated at 15.
From'the foregoing, it will be seen that due to the elongated opening 9 and the conave their free endsA posi-A struction of the pin 10, the jaw 8 will be permitted to move to a degree to adjust itself independently of the movement of the .handle5.
In the use of the device, the jaws are positioned around an article to be removed, and pressure is brought to bear on the handle portion 5, causn the handle portion 5 to pivot at' 13 and move the jaw 8 into close engagement with the article under operation.
.It is obvious that as the pressure on thel arms, the ends thereof having connection with the arms of the handle portion at the offset portions thereof, the first mentioned jaw being pivotally supported between the spaced armsfof the outer jaw, and teeth formed on the jaws.
In testimon that I claim 'the foregoing as own, havev hereto aixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WALTER L. BOCKOVER.'
